Delta 747-400 (ok really NWA with new paint)

and really bitter employee comments...

My question... are they changing the interior too? Are they changing World Business to the DL product (or the new flatbeds)?

I doubt they'll touch the interior. Not worth it for such old aircrafts that should have been retired. And they do have pretty new WBC seats, so no urgency to change.

rkkwan you're probably right. Delta isn't looking to spend any extra money these days.

But, I did just ask the same question on the Delta blog. If any info comes from there, I'll update this thread.

What is the average age of the NW 747s. I'll bet they are "relics".

747-400 first went into service in I believe 1988.

Most of NW's 744 went into service in 1989-90, though there are a few newer ones delivered between 1999-2002. NW was one of the earliest customers for the sub-model along with Cathay Pacific, British Airways, KLM and Lufthansa.

They still operate some DC-9s built in the 1960's, though they're retiring them fairly quickly.

DC 9 .....I really try to avoid that equipment whenever possible. It was a marginal aircraft even when first introduced!

The DC-9 is clearly a great aircraft. Not only are some still flying after 40 years in service, the basic design was good enough to be updated constantly to the various DC-9 versions, plus all the MD-80s, MD-90s, and the Boeing 717.

Thousands were built if you count all the variants and subsequent derivatives.

The original design had a "basic" electronics package that most pilots did not want to fly. Remember the blanks in the control panel where the optional nav. would go?

Rkk...I am not condemning the MD series, just not my cup of tea!!! The DC 3 also had a long and glorious lifespan.

Um, yes the 747 is an "older" design but so is the 737. The 747-400 is not "your father's Oldsmobile". They are still making them...

The last 747-400 passenger was delivered in 2005. And there were only a handful of 747-400F still not delivered.

The 747-8s are being delayed along with the 787 due to the recent strike and other production problems.
