Changing itinerary with AAdvantage miles
I never before knew it was possible to change an itinerary when booked with American AAdvantage miles. And it cost me only $1.80 -- for what I have no clue, but it's fine. Eight months ago I had booked a flight DFW-ORD-LHR and return using award miles. (At the time, there were no non-stops available using award miles.) When the equipment was changed recently, I contacted AAdvantage customer service to see if I could change the return flight and inquired about the cost to do so. Not only was the cost negligible, but I changed the return flight so that it was a non-stop LHR--DFW. Since there were no seats available on a non-stop outbound segment, I kept my original booking. If I had only known sooner that this was possible, I could have changed that one too. Wow! So glad to know this!

That's the exception to the rule; when something under the airline's control changes (flight times changed significantly, change of equipment, new/canceled routes, etc.) then there's no fee for the change. If it was your decision to change things without any changes on AA's part, you would have had to pay a change fee, most likely $150.

I am dealing with a different problem. Back in December 2011, I booked 3 seats for travel to Hawaii in October.
Two of us are starting the trip in Houston and meeting up with our friend in DFW to continue on to LAX and then Kona. Took me a long time to find all the right flights with 3 seats at the lower award level.
Three weeks ago, there was a schedule change, and now 2 of us are on one flight from DFW to LAX (as well as an earlier departure from Houston) and our friend is on a later flight.
So far, I've been unable to have our friend moved to our flight -- unless I want to use more miles, which I don't. That's why I booked these flights 10 months in advance!
I doubt I will succeed so she may just have to fly by herself and we will meet up with her at LAX. But it is frustrating to have your well laid plans totally ruined so close to trip time.

AA used to let me change for minimal or no charge. But then, I was a Platinum person for several years in a row.
Now that I'm a lifetime gold, I get charged whatever for any changes.
However, AA is still "my" airline, and will always be, god help us about US Airways.

Happy to say that I finally got my flight issues resolved that I mentioned in the post above. I guess persistence pays off. Took 3 calls about a week apart to finally get someone who did something about the problem. OR, maybe they just got tired of me calling!!

In the OP's case, wouldn't it have been no charge anyway since there was no change to the origin or destination?
There would have been had it been the OP changing the route, or changing the times or dates. In this case it was AA's decision to change the equipment, which nullified the change fees (for the whole itinerary.)

Aren't all of those changes still free unless there's a change in origin/destination or award type?

No, it says,
"Changes to your outbound travel date, resulting in a departure within 21 days -
"A $75 USD award processing charge will apply for a confirmed change to the date on an AAdvantage MileSAAver® and AAnytime® award ticket if the change results in a new outbound travel date that is within 21 days of the original booking date (waived for AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum® and AAdvantage Gold® members using miles from their account)."
And since there are no more round-trip awards, any date change will be charged. I must be wrong on time changes within the same day.

if the change results in a new outbound travel date that is within 21 days of the original booking date
Since the OP booked 8 months ago, this change couldn't have resulted in travel within 21 days of original booking.
