Carrying Wine Internationally?

I'm from California flying into Heathrow and taking the EuroRail to Paris. I haven't read anything, post 9-11, that says I can't bring wine as a carry-on ... will I be bothered? I'm planning on keeping it in my shoulder bag.

genesea: you can carry-on wine no problem; just be sure you know the customs regulations regarding quantities allowed for import for personal consumption to the countries you plan to visit

Only problem might be in getting it through security in Ca. They may ask you to open it and taste it (remember the breast milk incident?). Then you would have the problem of the FA not letting you onboard with an open bottle if you get pulled out for the random gate check. Bottom line is, you won't get in trouble for trying to get it through security, but be prepared in case you have to drink up or pour it out.

Security is NOT going to worry about a corked and sealed bottle that had not been obviously tampered with, so neither should you. Just check those customs regulations regarding "alcoholic beverages for personal consumption"

Sorry to disagree Sandy, but that is sadly not the case as my poor sister can attest to on a SW flight from Memphis to Dallas. They SHOULDN'T worry about a sealed & corked bottle of wine, but the fact is that they do have the authority to make you open it. I was making the point about Airport security screeners, not customs agents.

The security screeners in the United States are no longer allowed to ask you to taste anything to prove it is ok.

So, they won't ask you to taste the wine, they will just throw it away.

In Europe, I don't imagine anyone would care about the wine.

I flew back from Italy last year on the first flight after 9/11 and then through 3 US airports with 3 bottles of wine in my carry-on, no problems anywhere. This surprised me--arguably a bottle of wine could wreak a lot more havoc than a dinner knife.

Are you thinking of broken bottles or drunken pilots?

deltareg: Wrong again! I just returned yesterday from an international trip (Asia via Honolulu) and had no problems with wine being in my hand-carried bag.
