Wildebeest Migration
Hi,
So, before I started thinking about a trip to Kenya, I had never given a single thought to wildebeest migration. Now, I feel like I HAVE to witness it. (Ridiculous, I know.) I will be volunteering in Kenya in late July/early August. I would like to do a camping safari in the Maasai Mara either before or after the volunteer piece. If I do it before (which would be easier, logistically), it will be early July. Is this likely to be too early for migration? Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences to share?

Not ridiculous, it's why many people plan a trip toEst Africa.
Usually the first wildes start heading into the Mara about the first week in July. A few years back it was June. When I try to hit the migration in Kenya, I plan no earlier than 3rd week in July.
Could you do your migration visit at the end of your volunteer time, early Aug? Then I'd say your odds are about 100%.

I've been fortunate to catch the migration arriving in the Mara late-May/early-June, but this is unusual. More often the herds start arriving mid-July, so as above... try for these safari days at conclusion of the volunteer time early-Aug.

June to July is a transitional period between the rains and the dry season.
Its during Early August that large herds start massing along the banks of the swollen Mara river producing one of the most spectacular sights. The mass of over 2 million animals cover the savannah and grassland as far as the eye can see.
August would be ideal.

Are you talking about just seeing the migration or do you want to see the Wildebeest crossing the Mara River.
If just the migration then go at the end of your volunteer time like atravelynn said.
