Hi,

I'm taking my first trip overseas (of any consequence) in October. I'm going to be doing an 'Intrepid Traveller' tour of Morroco for 7 days and will be going by myself. I will be in Morocco (needing to travel from Marakesh to Casablanca) for an extra day after the tour finishes. I've seen some other posts of single females in Morocco, but they seem to be a few years old.

I was just wondering if anyone could provide me with any advice for while I'm there, whether I will be safe travelling alone in a train from Marakesh to Casablanca and at the hotel overnight etc.

I'm sorry to sound paranoid or silly - I just want to hear from other people who have actually done this!

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I too plan on taking an Intrepid Travel Tour for 21 days, and plan on staying for a week afterwards alone to do watercolor painting. The trip is a loooong ways off but I am wondering the same thing. I have heard mixed reviews about travelling alone as a female. Like there's no safety issue just verbal harrassment? But in Casablanca, it is the most modern city and should be no problems.

what hotel are you using in Morocco? Do you know if the new hotel that Air Morocco is building at the airport in Casablanca is finished yet?

You will be perfectly safe by yourself in Morocco. Trains are convenient and safe (travel first class - its only a couple dollars more than second class). Hotels will be no problem if you stay away from dives and seedy-looking places. When I travel alone, I stay at the Ibis next to the train station in Casa - its reasonable, safe, and clean.

You may get some attention from men, but its not threatening or malicious...just sometimes irritating. Just ignore it. And use common sense like you would anywhere - dont walk around alone at night in unfamilar or dark places, dont tell people where you're staying, etc.

Jenmaroc - thank you very much for your advice - it's much appreciated - and puts me very much at ease! I had thought it would be ok - but it's just very comforting to actually hear it!

Kleroux - I'm not sure which hotel I'll be staying in as yet - I hadn't got as far as organising it - I will look into whether it is open or not and will let you know!

I was there this last month with two friends. Us 3 single females toured the country completely on our own ( except for the dessert where we used a guide ) and felt very safe once we got there ( we had some misconceptions or aprehensions )
By the time you are on your own you will be comfortable enough with the morocans to feel not threatened. Plus, casablanca and marrakesh, where you will be on your own, are very tourist friendly.
Be carful, but to the extent you would be being on your own in any other country.

I was in the same exact position this time last year. I took an Intrepid tour and there were 4 of us who all traveled back to Casa together from Marrakesh- it's possible you'll find the same on your tour. I, too, stayed at the Ibis, which is right next door to the train station from the airport. Have fun!

We have ended up booking at the Hyatt for the one night we'll be in Casa. I understand that the new hotel Atlas Nousseur owned by Air Morocco is opening in June. Its at the airport. But I haven't been able to contact them for info on rates or reservations. If anyone has that info it would be appreciated.

kleroux: The Atlas hotel at Casablanca airport is scheduled to open in July. It will be a four-star hotel.

Rates have not been published yet, but my "educated guess" is that a double room will be between US$60 and 80 per night.

Hi , i have posted a message concerning my trip in Morocco ( surely i was alone) before getting to Morocco i've read few Hamid's message on (www.virtuatourist.com) and i was gladly to meet this berber funny guide/driver , i've sent him a message for arranging everything for me there and he done . it was my fisrt tour to Morocco frankly a little bit scared because i have heard many rumours about Morocco ...but Ask the experienced rather than a doctor Morocco is a photogenic country has a spectacular landscapes & sightnesses ,the moment that i get my first step on Morocco's land meeting Hamid in the airport i felt like i'm in the safest world , i have spent my whole week over there hiking around i really didn't want to leave Morocco but i had to! Hamid with his tour experience & his 4x4( Toyota land-cruiser) was quite good , thx a lots for him i discoverd lot of new things all over Morocco , this one latter's best views in the south has been discoverd .
i went also to Hamid's home shared greets with his humbly descent family , had mint-tea over there then headed to the desert area just a look on the dunes's spectacular sighness with a calmness the noise cities in your country will be forgotten i had an experience of the cameltrecking , tents ....etc quite wow!
regardless of the rest best views in cities /kasbahs/ksars and old berber tribes everything was magical .
Hamid's email [email protected] has been created from his background Merzouga ergchebbi dunes the biggest colourful sands in AFRICA .
this was just a short report of my SAFARI to Morocco .
