MalaMala Photos
After seeing everyone's photos I decided it was about time I got my act together and tried to post my pictures from our trip to MalaMala in July 2007.
This was our first but certainly not last trip to Africa. I hope you enjoy them half as much as I did taking them.

OK, that link definately didn't work. I'm new at this. Try this one:

OK, I can't figure out why the link wants to display twice when I review my post - since I'm only typing it once - but you can still get to the pictures if you're interested by selecting the second link.

BRW,
You were there right after I was and I felt like I knew exactly where some of those locations were.
Adorable lion cubs. The nyala were more cooperative for you than for me. My favs were the kudu and the mother and baby zebra. Thanks for posting. How nice your first trip had such a variety of wildlife.
SD,
In case BRW does not get back here for some time, Mala Mala is in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve in South Africa. It is one of the many private reserves that borders Kruger and it is the largest.
When I was investigating going there, I found these threads helpful.

Here is a quote from someone on Fodor's and I apologize for not knowing who. It might even be contained within those links, above.
I worked at Mala Mala for two weeks as part of work experience. I got to know most of the leopards and lion prides. The big factor contributing to the awesome game viewing at Mala Mala is the fact that Mala Mala’s land is situated on a 19 km(15 mile) stretch of the sand river. This river is basically an animal magnet( espeicially in wintertime). Mala Mala also own the largest property in the Sabi Sands. More land = more animals. They also have quite a few land rovers going out each morning and afternoon. If all three camps are full about 16 game drive vehicles traverse Mala Mala’s traversing area. More vehicles = more sightings. No overcrowding! Maximum 2 vehicles per sighting. You stay minimum 35 minutes at leopard sighting(if it’s exciting).
I think the max 2 vehicles is wrong. It's 3.
The criticism of Mala Mala is that it is not as wild as places in Botswana or elsewhere and there is more emphasis on seeing the Big 5. On the other hand some people go nowhere else and spend weeks at a time there.
If you go to the Southern Africa trip report index, click post a reply, then pull down edit and search for Mala Mala, you'll see many trip reports and photos on it.

Here's a map of SSGR and Kruger that includes Mala Mala and lots of other places you may read about.

Lynn, I tried to use your searching process in the SA Index, but I continue to be incompetent. After clicking "post a reply," I didn't find an "edit" pulldown. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

That Edit and Find are at the top of my screen as part of my browser. Maybe your browser is different.
The reason I even mentioned all these directions is because the Search box at the top of the Fodors site is not that effective for me. If it were, then I'd just use this Search box.
So I resort to other methods.
If I pull up a Fodors thread and want to search the whole thing for a certain word, I have found that I must first choose Post a Reply.
After that I pull down Edit from the menu at the top of my screen and then click on Find. Up pops the box where I can type the word.
An even quicker way is to hold down one of the Ctrl keys along with F. Up pops the box where I can type the word.
Just because it works for me on my 2001 Dell using Internet Explorer through SBC Global, doesn't mean it works for everyone.
Here's another thing you could do. Copy and paste the whole Fodor's thread into Word. Then use the find feature in Word. Again, it would be Ctrl & F or Pull down Edit from the menu at the top and click Find. Up pops the box where you can type the word.
In the past I thought Google's Advanced Search was more effective than it is now. I would use that instead of Fodor's Search Box.
Anyway, it can be like searching for eggs on an Easter Egg Hunt. Hope you all find some chocolate rabbits, whatever your religion.

Great photos Bob. You certainly saw a wide variety of game, including my current favorite, the wild dogs. My favorite photo was of the lioness and all the young cubs. You were so very close. She was definitely watching you, wasn't she?

Glad you all enjoyed the photos.
SD - As Lynn already explained better than I would have, Mala Mala is right next to Krueger and the game viewing is great. We were only there for 4 days and saw even more than the pictures indicate.
Lynn - Yes, the nyla were very cooperative, the group of males were right outside the gates of Rattray's. The big Kudu standing on the hill was wonderful luck, it was like he was waiting for his picture to be taken. I love zebra and was really happy to get the zebra and her foal.
Cybor - That wasn't a very good wild dog picture but the best one I got. Our best sighting of the wild dogs happened at dusk and none of my pictures came out very well. We had a pack of dogs chase a bush buck right in front of our Land Rover and bring it down in a thicket about 20 yards away. We could see what was going on but in the failing light all you can see is the brush in my pictures. It was the only time the entire trip we were a little nervous. The pack devoured everything within about 5 minutes with much snarling.
Dana - The lioness and her cubs were one of the highlights of the trip. Our game ranger, Chris, got us to within about 20 feet and I kept expecting the Land Rover to get stuck. They were by the Sand River (which was very low since it was July). We were perched on the bank and the lioness and cubs were on the other bank across about a 10 foot wide channel of water. On their side the land was at water level but on our side we were about 2 feet above the water. The vehicle was actually pitched forward and I kept expecting to slide off the bank and into the river - fortunately that didn't happen but I understand later that day another vehicle tried to do what we did and did get stuck.
