Internet in Egypt

Hi all,

I was thinking of buying a small netbook computer with me to Egypt so I can send emails and picture to my family.
Do most of the hotel have internet, as well as the Nile Cruise ships?

Thanks

The hotels we stayed in (Mena House, Steigenberger, Old Cataract) all had internet in some fashion (in room/wi-fi in lobby/etc) but it could be very expensive. They also had computers in the business centres that were cheaper (or free if I recall correctly)

Our boat (the Oberoi Philae) had free wi-fi.

We had free wifi at the Hotel Longchamps but our Nile cruise boat and the Steigenberger and Iberotel were expensive to use the internet. The netbook came in great everynight for downloading that day's pictures so we won't lose them.

We noticed that the charges for the internet varied quite a bit from one place to another. Charges ranged from 3.90LE (70 cents) per minute at the Mena House in Cairo to $15/20 for 24 hours at the Sonesta Saint George in Luxor. The boat, Al Kahila, had internet (about $14 per hour) but it only worked with Windows operating systems...not Macs (we had one of each). In Luxor, before we checked into our hotel, we went to an internet cafe at the market which was $2/3 for an hour!

If you have free time to use your net book, you can get free wi-fi at almost all coffee shops like Starbucks. Cilantro charges a fee for theirs, but if you get into a place like City Stars Mall, it is free almost everywhere in there.

The Starbucks sounds like the perfect choice! In our case, we were connecting in our rooms after long days mainly to stay in touch with a "worried" mother/grandmother so it was the most convenient/economical way to do so. We weren't inconvenienced and were able to stay connected with her. It was money well spent to make sure she knew we were okay.
