HELP! NEED PLACE TO STAY IN NAIROBI

hello, everyone!

we were wondering if you could suggest some places to stay in nairobi. we'll be there just for 1 night (november 17 - november 18).

we just need a simple, clean room. nothing expensive or fancy. economically priced. we'd ideally something that isn't a chain hotel.

thanks a bunch!

Been a number of years since I last stayed there, but Boulevard Hotel met your requirements; basic, clean, comfortable, and nice breakfast room. See their web site. Near the much more upscale, and desirable, Norfolk Hotel, which I believe is clearly outside the parameters you've established.

Be aware that these hotels are near the university, and area that this writer does not consider safe to walk about after dark. But, then that can be said of virtually all of Nairobi.

Enjoy your journey. Much of Africa is exciting and exotic, and will whet your appetite to return.

Hello Ziggypoo,
I can recommend the Terminal. It's considerably less expensive than the Panafric and the Boulevard, though it's not perfectly clean: the beds are very clean, but I don't think “every nook and cranny” cleaning is done that often and it's a bit frayed around the edges. There are nice bathrooms with hot water, the staff is absolutely charming and it's in a nice street. A more polished alternative to the Terminal that's still less expensive than the Boulevard etc is Kenya Comfort.

Stayed in Boulevarde Hotel in June for 5000ksh B & B. Ask for a quiet room 'cause some hear more traffic noise than others as do most of the Nairobi hotels. It certainly clean and more than adequate.

The price for a single at the Terminal last year was 1,200 shillings (it's 1,500 for a double and 1,800 for a triple). Breakfast was not included, but could be had for 150 shillings or so next door. The Embassy had the same price as the Terminal, but included breakfast. It also had a more polished look and was almost perfectly clean, but the staff was un-charming, the street was a bit scary at night and it brought me bad luck. There are also perfectly adequate hotels for less than 1,000 shillings.

For a quick overnight if you don't want to go all the way into the city center, The Panari Hotel is about 10 minutes or so from Jomo Kenyatta on Mombasa Road.

I stayed there last March for a night and if I recall correctly, it was about $150.
Hotel and rooms are nice, clean and have a/c. And the staff was helpful and friendly.
