Car and Driver from Nairobi to Ol Malo?

Has any one ever done this journey by car? Is it worth doing? I am trying to get from N to Ol Malo on the 25th and can not connect with regualr flights. A charter will cost $960!! So now I amwondering if I can get a car and driver to get me there!

We flew...Bush and Beyond will put it together for you, won't they? All I can say is that Ol Malo was the most wonderful, magical place we have ever been. If you stay, try for room 4...this was our room...spectacular!

Kennedy (guide that a few of us on the board have used) could probably get you there - he can be reached at

Looks like it would be about a 5 - 6 hr drive though!

I've only driven from Nairobi to Samburu, which was also around 5 hours, and its manageable and a nice way to see the countryside. If you leave early, around 6:00 am or so, you'll be there by late morning -- definitely worth it to save nearly $1,000. Have you contacted Ol Malo -- its likely that they can recommend a driver.

I think nearly all of the local safari operators will do transport only services if you ask. Just send out some emails. Make sure you are clear if you need a proper 4WD.

You could also fly to Nanyuki (more than half way) on a scheduled flight and get a pick up from there to El Malo. Or a charter might be a lot cheaper from there.

However, I think you'll find it will start getting a bit complex becasue you will need transport to your next destination too, right? So you'd probably be paying for 4 trips (to and from Nairobi if that's where your car is coming from).

Ask Ol Malo and Lewa (you may be going there afterwards right?)

I'm with Kimburu - take the scheduled flight from NBO to Nanyuki and then the flight to Ol Malo. One way to Nanyuki is around $100. No need for a private charter all the way from NBO.

Depending on time of year, there are scheduled flights from Nanyuki to Ol Malo. Off-season, it may have to be a pvt charter and as a single pax you may have to pay for the other 2 or 3 seats, but still way less than the price you show.

There is scheduled service from Nairobi to Lewa on Air Kenya and Safarilink.

www.airkenya.biz
www.safarilink-kenya.com

From Lewa, it looks like you could take Tropic Air's scheduled service (high season only) to Ol Malo, then the Masai Mara.

By changing the order of your stays to Lewa, Ol Malo, and Little Governors, you may be able to take scheduled air throughout.

Ol Malo is in the Laikipia area. It's one of those small intimate lodges/camps cut out of the large ranches that dominate this area. Others in/around are Loisaba, Sabuk, etc.

Hari,
See www.laikipia.org there's a map there showing the locations of the camps.
