ABOUT
The village of Chacao (where your ferry arrives) was actually the site of one of the first Spanish shipyards in the Americas, but it was moved in 1769 to Ancud, which was deemed a more defensible location. Ancud was repeatedly attacked during Chile's war for independence and remained the last stronghold of the Spaniards in the Americas—as well as the seat of their government-in-exile after they fled from Santiago, until 1826—when the island was finally annexed by Chile.
