Ikeda's Country Market & Pie Shop

For more than a half-century a de rigueur stop between the Bay Area and Lake Tahoe, Ikeda's started as a produce stand selling fruit harvested from its Japanese-American owners' orchard and the freshly baked pies brimming with that fruit. Known for handmade jeans, overalls, and other denim wear, as well as small-batch T-shirts and other items, the store is as comfortable as your favorite pair and is worth a look, even if you can’t splurge. The building is a former gas station dating from the 1950s, which gives you an idea of how this neighborhood looked in a former incarnation. Another throwback feature: all the clothing is made in the USA. The store hosts occasional music events in the back.

Imports Gift Shop

At this colofrul local favorite, you'll find soaps and lotions; a small collection of 14-karat-gold chains, rings, earrings, and bracelets; and a jumble of Hawaiian quilts, pillows, souvenirs, books, and postcards.
