Flower Hill Promenade

Del Mar

At first glance, this open-air shopping center anchored by a Whole Foods Market ( 858/436–9800) might look like your typical upscale SoCal mall, but take a closer look, because there's way more to it than meets the eye. There's not only some great shopping—much of it locally owned and eco-minded—but also some of San Diego's best restaurateurs like Tracy Borkum of CUCINA enoteca, have opened restaurants here. Sweetpea ( 858/481–0683) stocks children's clothing from brands like Magnetic Me and Petit Bateau. Van de Vort ( 858/925–7676) sells the latest curated fashion from around the world.

Freshfields Village

Located at the crossroads of Kiawah and Seabrook islands, this shopping area includes a variety of homegrown stores. There are French and Italian restaurants, an ice-cream shop, a sports outfitter, and stores selling upscale apparel. More than just a shopping destination, Freshfields has become a major social center, offering everything from wine and beer tastings to movies and concerts on the green.

Gulf Coast Town Center

This retail and dining megacomplex includes a 130,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops, as well as as a Ron Jon Surf Shop, Target, Costco, Golf Galaxy, and movie theaters.

Haiku Marketplace at the Cannery

This assortment of shops (including a small grocery store and a hardware store), service providers, a post office, and various businesses make up the hub of the town. The biggest draws, besides enjoying a nice stroll through the area, are two of the island's most popular restaurants, Colleen's at the Cannery and Nuka.

Haleiwa Store Lots

The most notable tenant here is the legendary Matsumoto's Shave Ice. (You'll know it by the long line of people.) The shiny, open-air complex is also home to the locally operated Whaler's General Store and the casual beach-chic boutique Guava Shop, as well as surf photographer Clark Little's art gallery.

Hammock Shops Village

Two dozen boutiques, gift shops, and restaurants, set in cottages built with old beams, timber, and ballast brick, under a canopy of live oaks, make up this charming shopping district. Outside the Original Hammock Shop, in the Hammock Weavers' Pavilion, craftspeople demonstrate the 19th-century art of weaving the famous cotton-rope Pawleys Island hammocks. Also look for jewelry, toys, antiques, and designer fashions.

Hanalei Center

Once an old schoolhouse, the Hanalei Center now houses a bevy of boutiques and restaurants. You can dig through '40s and '50s vintage memorabilia, find Polynesian artifacts, or search for that unusual gift, including fine jewelry and paper-art jewelry. Buy beach gear as well as island wear and women's clothing. A full-service salon and a yoga studio are in the two-story modern addition to the center.

Harborplace and the Gallery

At the Inner Harbor, the Pratt Street and Light Street pavilions of Harborplace and the Gallery contain almost 200 specialty shops that sell everything from business attire to children's toys. The Gallery has Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, and the Gap, among others.

Hilo Shopping Center

Among this shopping plaza's 40 shops are a guitar store, a pharmacy, a brewpub, a trendy boutique, and the popular Island Naturals Market & Deli. Other dining destinations include Happy Valley Seafood Restaurant, Sunlight Cafe, and Restaurant Miwa, a Japanese restaurant. There's plenty of free parking. Across the street, the Kilauea Market has a wide variety of hard-to-find Asian cooking ingredients.

Hokulei Village

Just down the highway between Kauai Community College and the Lihue town center, this newer retail plaza has a bank and Verde New Mexican restaurant, plus a Safeway, Aloha Aina Juice Café, Verizon store, gas station, and Domino's. Its grounds are fresher and more inviting than some of Kauai’s older malls.

Kaloko Light Industrial Park

Located south of the airport, this large retail complex includes Costco, the best place to stock up on food if you're staying at a vacation rental. Kona Wine Market features curated wines and beers, while Mrs. Barry's Kona Cookies sells beautifully packaged, delicious "souvenirs."

Kauai Village Shopping Center

The buildings of this Kapaa shopping village are in the style of a 19th-century plantation town. ABC Discount Store sells sundries; Safeway carries groceries and alcoholic beverages; Papaya's has health foods. Also here are a T-Mobile phone store, Ross Dress for Less, a UPS store, a Chinese restaurant, and Starbucks.

Kawaihae Harbor Shopping Center

This almost-oceanfront shopping plaza houses the exquisite Harbor Gallery, which represents many Big Island artists. Try the Big Island–made ice cream and shave ice (the best in North Hawaii) at local favorite Anuenue. Also here are Kohala Burger and Taco, Mountain Gold Jewelers, and Kohala Divers.

Keauhou Shopping Center

About 5 miles south of Kailua Village, this large neighborhood shopping center includes KTA Superstore, Longs Drugs, Kona Stories bookstore, and a multiplex movie theater. Kenichi Pacific, an upscale sushi restaurant, and Peaberry & Galette, a café that serves excellent crepes, are favorite eateries, joined by Bianelli's Pizza. You can also grab a quick bite at Los Habaneros, Subway, or L&L Hawaiian Barbecue.

Kings' Shops

Lakeside restaurants and cafés, surf shops, designer boutiques, a nine-hole putting green, a farmers' market, a weekly Polynesian fire-knife show, and free morning petroglyph tours are just a few of the reasons to visit this conveniently located outdoor shopping center. Probably the best large center on the Kohala Coast, its roster of stores includes Martin & MacArthur, Tori Richard, and island jewelers Na Hoku, as well as high-end retailers Tiffany & Co. and Michael Kors. Gourmet offerings abound at A-Bay's Island Grill, Foster's Kitchen, and the more casual Island Fish & Chips. Shuttles run from the resorts to the center daily from noon to 8, although A-Bay's stays open until midnight, a rarity on the coast.

Kinipopo Shopping Village

At this tiny center on Kuhio Highway, Korean BBQ Restaurant fronts the highway, as does Goldsmiths Kauai, a gallery selling handcrafted Hawaiian-style gold jewelry. A bakery, a surf shop, and a real estate company round out the businesses here.

Koloa Village

With plantation-style architecture designed to blend with historic buildings down the block, this new multiuse complex is becoming well-populated with restaurants, retail, services, and offices that attract both residents and visitors. Most retail tenants are local small businesses, not mainland franchises, and there's a wellness vibe thanks to Hoku Foods, Kauai Juice Co., a yoga studio, and e-bike rentals.

Kona Commons

This downtown center features a Ross Dress for Less (for suitcases, shoes, swimsuits, and aloha wear) and Hawaiian Island Creations (for a great selection of surf gear, clothing, and accessories). There's also an Old Navy, Island Naturals, Vitamin Shoppe, Office Max, and a number of other smaller clothing retailers. Food and drink options include fast-food standbys like Dairy Queen, Subway, and Panda Express, as well as Ultimate Burger, for local beef and delicious house-made fries, and Genki Sushi, where the goods are delivered via conveyor belt. Across the street, Target has fresh-flower lei for a fraction of the cost of local florists.

Kona Inn Shopping Village

Originally a hotel, the Kona Inn was built in 1928 to accommodate a new wave of wealthy travelers arriving by steamer and was booked months in advance. As hotels and resorts opened along the Kona and Kohala Coasts, it was transformed into a low-rise, outdoor shopping village with shops and island-style eateries. Although quite a few longtime shops did not survive the pandemic, new ones are expected to take their place. Broad lawns with coconut trees on the ocean side provide a lovely setting for an afternoon picnic. The iconic Kona Inn is best for drinks and appetizers.

Kukui Grove Center

This is Kauai's only true mall. Anchor tenants are Target, Longs Drugs, Macy's, Ross, and Times Supermarket. The mall's stores offer women's clothing, sunglasses, surf wear, art, toys, athletic shoes, jewelry, a hair salon, and locally made crafts. Restaurants range from fast food and sandwiches to sushi and Korean, with a popular Starbucks and Jamba Juice. The center stage has Hawaiian music on Friday nights and a farmers' market on Monday afternoons.

Lahaina Gateway

Besides an eclectic mix of eateries, this plaza includes stores that sell surf gear and beach-chic apparel.

Lenox Square

Buckhead

One of Atlanta's oldest and most popular shopping centers, Lenox Square has branches of Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's, and Macy's next to specialty shops such as Cartier and Mori. Valet parking is available at the front of the mall, but free parking is nearby. You'll do better at one of the several good restaurants in the mall—even for a quick meal—than at the food court.

Malibu Country Mart

Stop by this outdoor outpost for the ultimate Malibu lifestyle experience: browse on-trend clothing (Náti, American Vintage, or Madison) and eclectic California housewares and gifts (Malibu Colony Co.), pick up body-boosting wellness goodies (SunLife Organics), and finish the day off with dinner at long-standing eatery Tra di Noi, reputed to be a favorite of Barbra Streisand. If you can squeeze in a workout, there are multiple studios to choose from, plus tarot readings at metaphysical outpost Malibu Shaman. Then reward yourself for your good health habits by stopping at K Chocolatier by Diane Krön for some of her famed truffles, derived from a Hungarian family recipe.

Manchester Designer Outlets

This is the most upscale collection of stores in northern New England—and every store is a discount outlet. The architecture reflects the surrounding homes, so the place looks a bit like a Colonial village. The long list of famous-brand clothiers here includes Yves Delorme, Tumi, Polo Ralph Lauren, Pendleton, Brooks Brothers, and Theory.

Mercado San Agustin

Downtown

Take the street car one stop west of Downtown, its turnaround point, and you'll arrive at an intriguing collection of shops and restaurants known as the Mercado San Agustin and the MSA Annex. Along with boutiques, the Spanish Colonial--style Mercado houses the popular Seis Kitchen (Contemporary Mexican), Agustin Kitchen (French), and local favorites like Presta Coffee and La Estrella Bakery. Continue your food crawl across the street at the Annex, a mini mall built of shipping containers, and sample Japanese at Kukai or vegan burgers and shakes at Beaut Burger. A farmer's market is held here every Thursday.

Mizner Park

This distinctive 30-acre shopping center off Federal Highway, one block north of Palmetto Park Road, intersperses apartments and town houses among its gardenlike commercial areas. Some three dozen retailers line the central axis. It's peppered with fountains and green space, restaurants, galleries, a jazz club, a movie theater, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, and an amphitheater that hosts major concerts as well as community events.
