Charles Hosmer Morse Museum Gift Shop

The museum contains the world's most comprehensive collection of Tiffany stained glass, drawings, paintings, jewelry, pottery, and other objets d'art—so naturally shoppers come here for the representations of Tiffany glass, silk scarves with stained-glass motifs, and fine-art glass that Louis Comfort himself would have treasured. There are also many objects from world museum gift collections and a wide assortment of books about the Arts and Crafts movement.

ChoiceMART

This gem of a supermarket carries standard groceries and a surprisingly good selection of specialty items for such a small store. They also have excellent organic and Hispanic food aisles. Fresh poke is available by the pound at the butcher counter. This is probably the best place on the island for fresh fish, as the owner once fished with all his current suppliers and still maintains those connections. Grass-fed meats are plentiful too. Prices can be on the high side at times, balanced with good prices on other items.

All over the world at Christmas, folks hang stockings knitted by the proprietor, who you're likely to find with needles in hand at this year-round homestead shopin business since 1984 in the village of Bernard across the water from Bass Harbor. There are large and small stockings and, yes, designs include a red lobster on a green background. Her other craft items and some made by family members are also sold, as are used goods, including books. Flying Solo

SoHo

Flying Solo is anything but. That's because this SoHo shop is actually an assemblage of designers who have come together to cooperate with each other, instead of compete. The industrial-chic, 7,000-square-foot-space features about 70 or so brands, each one displaying jewelry, handbags, shoes, beauty products, housewares, and ample amounts of fashionable, this-season clothing. Think of it as a smaller, but very hip department store for all your fashion needs and desires.

Hammock Shops Village

Two dozen boutiques, gift shops, and restaurants, set in cottages built with old beams, timber, and ballast brick, under a canopy of live oaks, make up this charming shopping district. Outside the Original Hammock Shop, in the Hammock Weavers' Pavilion, craftspeople demonstrate the 19th-century art of weaving the famous cotton-rope Pawleys Island hammocks. Also look for jewelry, toys, antiques, and designer fashions.

Hi-Desert Daydream

This nouveau-boho boutique carrying a little bit of everything is just the kind of shop you hope to happen upon during a vacation. Between apparel, candles, journals, art, coffee, tea, cocktail kits, felt Coachella hats, jewelry, dried flowers, and photos of desert splendor and the nearby national park, most of which are made by local creatives, you’ll likely find yourself in a “one for them, two for me” souvenir scenario.

Honolua Store

In contrast to Kapalua's many high-end retailers, the old Honolua Store still plies the groceries and household goods it did in plantation times. Hefty plates of ono (delicious) local foods are served at the deli until 3 pm and best enjoyed on the wraparound porch. The plate lunches are the quintessential local meal. The coffee bar is welcoming and includes air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi daily until 6 pm.

Honolua Surf Company

Surfer chic apparel, compliments of Roxy, Billabong, Hurley, and even Honolua's private label, is for sale here for both men and women. This is a great place to shop for a bikini or board shorts, or to pick up a cool, retro-design T-shirt or Hawaii-style embroidered hoodie. There are also plenty of beach accessories, including hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen, plus a section dedicated to kids.

Jet Rag

West Hollywood

While Jet Rag is known for costumes and film and television wardrobe, it's also on local vintage lovers' radars for sought-after items. They have perfectly worn boots and leather jackets, denim cutoffs, Calvin Klein dresses, and colorful cat-eye sunnies. The store takes its reasonable prices one step further on Sunday with an all-day parking lot sale where everything goes for $1; just be prepared to dig for the real finds.

The deli counter offers a wide variety of smoothies and an excellent roast beef sandwich served with chips. Hot foods are available from 1 to 3 pm; eat outside on one of their small tables. Lawai Market

The original Lawai General Store got a facelift and now offers grab-and-go breakfast and lunch, groceries, sundries, a good selection of beer and wine, and a coffee/smoothie bar. At the gateway between the South Shore and the West Side, it's a fine spot to provision for adventures in the mountains or at the shore. Locals and condo renters alike stop by for farm produce, local beef, and house-baked bread, or to refuel with an acai bowl on the porch. Call or check Instagram for Sunday and holiday dinners to go.

Le French Tart Deli

Carroll Gardens

This shop specializing in French goods sells groceries from Camembert to lamb merguez. It's also a bakery offering baguettes and arguably the best croissant in the city. For the sweet tooth, they also make a variety of colorful macarons, in addition to what their name implies: French tarts.

The Lit. Bar

South Bronx

Currently the only independent bookstore in the Bronx, The Lit. Bar opened in April 2019—on National Indie Bookstore Day by no coincidence—as the realized dream of Noëlle Santos, a Black/Puerto Rican venture activist, and proud Bronx native. Venue for the occasional author talk or book signing, The Lit. Bar is a place with a self-proclaimed "bookstore and chill" vibe—the chill component coming in the form of an on-site wine bar that also serves charcuterie boards, boozy pudding pops, and gourmet popcorn.

The Locavore Variety Store

Greenwich Village

Bring home a truly local souvenir by heading to this diminutive space where owner Caroline Weaver has curated hundreds of fun, high-quality products made within 100 miles of NYC. All your favorite buzzwords are here: small batch, sustainable, organic, artisanal, etc. Pick up sunscreen made in Rockaway Beach, Queens; fettuccine from the Bronx's "Little Italy"; candles from Brooklyn; and even eat-on-the-spot pickles from the city's oldest pickle purveyor.

Macy's

Located in a large shopping center by itself, this small but upscale Macy's features name brands and island-influenced clothing for men, women and children, plus designer handbags, shoes, jewelry, and housewares, along with top-quality luggage if you find yourself needing to take more than you have room for. It's the best place in Kona to find high-quality, name-brand aloha shirts. They always have great sales and are beloved by local residents.

Made in TN

12 South

One of four locations in Nashville, this little shop is absolutely packed with potential presents for the folks back home: candles, puzzles, jewelry, food products, and more from a number of Nashville and/or Tennessee enterprises. Thistle Farms, an organization dedicated to helping women survivors of abuse and addiction, is well represented here, as is Loveless Cafe, Bongo Java coffee, and Sweet Tea Candle Company. There's a good selection of items for little ones, too. No room? No problem, you can arrange free shipping when you check out.
