Fodor's Expert Review Folly Beach
Anchored by the Folly Beach Pier, this is the Lowcountry's most iconic summer playground. Head out early to avoid traffic if you're visiting over a weekend. Street parking is free, but to avoid a ticket, all four wheels have to be off the pavement. If you're a surfer, keep driving until you reach Folly's Washout. Continue to the northeast end of the island to see the iconic Morris Island Lighthouse rise from the water, or head to the southwest end for lifeguards and amenities at the County Park. Stock up on snacks and sandwiches at Bert's Market on E. Ashley Avenue or grab a taco with the locals at Chico Feo across the street. Amenities: food and drink; lifeguards; parking (fee); toilets and showers (at Washout, the pier, and the County Park). Best for: swimming; surfing.
