Starbucks Reserve Roastery

$ | Near North Side

The largest Starbucks in the world offers a 35,000-square-foot coffee wonderland across five floors. Smell coffee brewing in a Chemex or siphon while beans whoosh in overhead tubes in the multi-sensory experience. Watch live coffee roasting on the ground level, snag one of many sleek seats along floor-to-ceiling windows, or admire Michigan Avenue views from the roof terrace. Reserve ahead for tours or hands-on experiences like Art of the Espresso Martini or Coffee Lab: A Journey of the Senses to skip the line when it gets busy (especially on the weekends).

Stark's Steak & Seafood

$$$$

The low lighting, well-spaced tables, and gas fireplaces at this Railroad Square Historic District restaurant create a congenial setting for dining on steak, raw-bar seafood, and sustainable fish. With entrées including a 20-ounce prime bone-in, dry-aged rib eye—plus a shareable 48-ouncer—there's no chance meat eaters will depart unsated, and non-steak options like seared ahi tuna and tamarind barbecue prawns surpass those at your average temple to beef.

Starland Cafe

Housed in a brightly painted two-story house, this legendary lunch spot is the restaurant that started the neighborhood's renaissance. From the fresh-pressed vegetarian Greek panini (brimming with crispy asparagus, hummus, marinated artichokes, feta, tomato, pesto, and house aioli) to the generously portioned Kitchen Sink Salad (dates, raisins, artichokes, apples, grapes, crunchy rice noodles, tomatoes, and onion), it’s hard to go wrong with a menu that prioritizes freshness and locally sourced greens. Folks travel for miles just for the tomato Thai soup.

Starland Yard Food Truck Park

$

Rotating food trucks means that menus revolve weekly at this literal playground constructed out of old shipping containers. Two permanent fixtures are a well-stocked central bar and Pizzeria Vittoria, whose piping hot oven manned by award-winning chef Kyle Jacovino churns out the neighborhood's best pizza. A credit card is taken upon entry, so visitors can order at the yard's multiple food sites and pay one bill as they exit. The park often hosts live music, and cornhole and other games make for a festive atmosphere.

Starlight Theatre

$$
This convivial restaurant-saloon with live-music is ground zero for all the ghosts and other characters of Terlingua. The menu includes plenty of local flavor, such as Terlingua chili and chicken-fried wild boar with Terlingua gold beer gravy. The Starlight is next door to the Terlingua Trading Post, where locals, some of whom look like prospectors from the Old West, sit on the shaded porch, tell stories, drink beer, and play one of the house guitars lying around.

Staropolska

$$

In your enthusiasm for exploring Avondale's bright young things, don't overlook this institution, which has been fortifying the neighborhood with heaping platters of traditional Polish fare since 1984. Starting off with pierogies (there are six varieties on offer) is a no-brainer. If you've brought a date, the special for two (which in truth could probably sate three or four) is a good way to sample the restaurant's greatest hits, like soul-warming stuffed cabbage and lacy potato pancakes.

Starr Boggs

$$$$

The dining room of this sophisticated see-and-be-seen restaurant has artwork, white linens, large windows, and simple wooden chairs. The New American fare featuring prime steaks and local seafood is just as attractive. The menu changes daily, and each dish, though it's on the expensive side, is unforgettable. Start with lobster bisque, followed, perhaps, by laquered Half Crescent Farm duckling or pan-seared dolphin. Diners with heartier appetites can opt for the grilled Kobe flatiron steak. There's open-air dining on the patio, which has a waterfall. A $35 prix-fixe menu is available, as well as specials like Monday night's all-you-can-eat lobster bake.

Starry Night Café

$$$

A young chef with Vermont roots and California training serves standout seasonal, farm-to-table cuisine among handcrafted tableware and furniture at this popular, chic restaurant. A rotating display of works by local artists graces the walls, and the fireside porch, with its views of gardens and trees, is open all year. The bar, which got a fresh look in 2024, is a smart stop for a drink and a snack if the restaurant's fully booked.

Station 118

$$

What was once a vintage gas station has been reborn as a casual dining spot with a Texas vibe. Moist, smoked barbecue is the star here, with offerings including brisket, pulled pork, and pork and beef ribs. The menu also includes tacos, sandwiches, pizzas, soups, and salads. Great specials amp up the selection even further. Sunday brunch features country-fried steak and eggs or biscuits and gravy; sometimes jalapeño cheddar grits or lobster johnnycake with champagne beurre blanc make an appearance. Like most everything else here, the sauces are made from scratch, and you can even buy a bottle or two to take with you. Save room for the yummy cheesecake, whose flavor changes frequently. The bar mixes creative cocktails, including weekly margarita specials, and there's draft Maine beer, wine, and plenty of nonalcoholic choices. There's frequent live music, too.

Steadfast Coffee

$ | Germantown

Germantown's Steadfast Coffee offers up the usual assortment of espresso drinks and café-style food options, but they also have some tasty menu items you'll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Their coffee soda, for example, is an unusual blend of espresso, soda water, and orange peel and has to be tried to be understood, while their "rested" coffee drinks bring out new flavors in old classics.

Steak 954

$$$$ | Beachfront

It's not just the steaks that impress at Stephen Starr's superstar spot inside the W Fort Lauderdale, the seafood selections shine, too. Order as many dishes as possible, like the lobster and crab-coconut ceviche, the red snapper tiradito, and the Colorado lamb chops. Fancy a side of tater tots? The hyperbolic tater comes in pancake form, stuffed with sour cream. There are sweeping views of the ocean and an intimate atmosphere in the dining room. Sunday brunch is busy, so arrive early for the best views. If you have to wait for a table, at least there's a giant aquarium with a smack of bioluminescent jellyfish.
