Sugoi Bento and Catering

$ | Iwilei

Among the first of a new wave of plate-lunch places to take particular care with quality and nutrition, this breakfast-and-lunch spot in a strip mall offers brown rice and green salad as options instead of the usual white rice and mayo-loaded mac salad. Sweet-and-spicy garlic chicken and mochiko (rice-batter-dipped and fried) chicken, adapted from traditional Japanese dishes, are specialties that bring locals back again and again. Service is quick and cheerful. Sugoi lives up to its name, which means "awesome" or "wow" in Japanese.

Sukho Thai

$$ | Faubourg Marigny

This Thai restaurant fits into its artsy neighborhood with servers wearing all black and a trendy, art-gallery approach to decorating. You can't go wrong with any of the curries, but the fried whole fish with three spicy chili sauces is a showstopper. Creative homemade desserts take the form of "dragon puffs" (think Thai-style beignets) and black-rice pudding. A full bar includes cocktails with Thai-influenced ingredients like lemongrass simple syrup and a bloody Mary with Thai chili-garlic infused vodka.

Sullivan's Castle Island

$ | South Boston

Family owned and established in 1951, this beach-style dairy bar—affectionately nicknamed Sully's—serves fried seafood, hot dogs, hamburgers, and ice cream at Castle Island. Don't expect frills or indoor seating—there is no need since its surroundings provide sloping lawns, picnic tables, benches, and beach vistas for lunching. Fries don't automatically come as a side with sandwiches, so if you want them, make sure you order them.

Summer Revival

$$

Just outside town, this was someone’s cozy house before it was transformed into a great coffee shop and wine bar with delicious food (the Sourdough BLT sandwich is jammed with thick-cut bacon; ask for avocado), all-natural wine flights, and home-baked goods like the olive oil cake that is truly hard to resist. The owners are winemakers and have launched a new natural wine label, Summer Revival Wine Co., here in Texas.

Summit House

$$

On top of Crystal Mountain at 6,872 feet is Washington's highest-elevation restaurant with stunning views of the northeastern face of Mt. Rainier. The Summit House is a popular stop for skiers, hikers, and summer tourists, with a menu featuring Northwest cuisine, including wild Pacific cod fish-and-chips in summer (halibut in winter), elk and bison chili, burgers, and huckleberry ice cream. Sit inside to stay warm by the fireplace, or sit outside on the patio and watch chipmunks run along the nearby rocks. The restaurant is reached by riding the scenic gondola from the base of the mountain; note that gondola tickets ($44 for adults; purchase in advance to save $9) must be purchased separately. There are no reservations, so there can be a wait.

On a clear day, photographers will find plenty of vantage points to capture Mt. Rainier (as well as Mt. Adams in the background). It's an epic view that still awes people who've seen it hundreds of times.

Summit Mountain Steakhouse

$$$$

The slightly off-the-beaten-track drive to this steak house southwest of East Glacier is well worth it. The small dining room has large windows with mountain views that are shared by an outdoor patio with additional seating. Two good starters are the roasted tomato bruschetta and the flatbread. They'll set you up nicely for the excellent handmade burgers and grilled steaks or the signature slow-roasted pork tenderloin in smoked Burgundy-huckleberry sauce. Cocktails, reasonably priced steak-friendly wines, and several craft beers complement the cuisine. The mountain huckleberry is Montana's prized wild fruit; here, it's used in a marvelous cheesecake.

Sun-in-Bloom

$$ | Park Slope
Those seeking vegan, gluten-free, or macrobiotic sustenance fill the tables at this bright, rustic eatery. Favorites include the "live" (uncooked) Bloom burger with sunflower dill dressing, the lasagna layered with butternut squash and roasted tomato, smoky shiitake bacon BLT wrapped in collards, the Reuben with marinated tempeh, and just about any of the desserts. The trade off here is that the level of concern in service can fall below the attention given to dietary needs.

Suna

$$

On a wooded country road just up the hill from Lake Sunapee, this lively little bar and bistro is great for a romantic meal or a relaxed bite after a day on the water or the mountain. The eclectic menu features a mix of classic American and Continental dishes with creative touches. Consider starting with the lobster-asparagus flatbread, before graduating to beer-battered fish-and-chips with Creole tartar sauce, or a New York prime strip steak with bacon-Parmesan Brussels sprouts.

Sundance The Steakhouse

$$$$

It’s almost a rite of passage for Stanford students and visiting families to visit this steak-house stalwart. Since 1974, it's been the place to go for shrimp cocktail followed by juicy prime rib. The clubby, wood-heavy decor definitely is on point for a classic steak house, but the vibe is a little more relaxed and energetic than at many of its peers. While the menu has all the traditional items of the genre, several dishes include elements from different cuisines of Asia, like filet mignon spring rolls.

Sunflower

$$$$
This small, simple-looking restaurant on Crested Butte's main street serves up perhaps the valley's best gourmet farm-to-table fare. New menus are printed regularly—creatively crafted to accommodate the fresh, organic meats and produce available that day from local farm suppliers—but they always feature a few delicious entrées, along with a generous selection of smaller plates. Because the restaurant's space is so limited, guests must choose between an earlier (around 6 pm) and a later (around 8 pm) seating time, but the close quarters makes for a convivial atmosphere.

Sunny Hill

$$$ | Ballard

Dine here to experience a classic Ballard phenomenon: a casually sophisticated kid-friendly restaurant. Local families come here for pizza night, but this ain't Chuck E Cheese; toppings include foraged mushrooms, shishito peppers, garlic-and-fennel sausage, and five kinds of cheese. There are two crust choices: thin, blistered, and round, or thick, chewy, and square. That all may sound a little pretentious, but as the 10-year-old at the next table will tell you, mainly it's delicious. (She may not be so enthusiastic about the charred broccoli.) Local microbrews and a long, predominantly Italian wine list help keep the grownups happy.

Sunrise Inn

$$

The owners of this cheerful little year-round restaurant on the shore of Kenai Lake call it a "backwoods bistro." The very reasonably priced menu includes breakfast dishes, homemade soups and chowders, wraps and vegetarian items, and hand-grated french fries. There's even a spotting scope in the parking lot for spying on the Dall sheep and mountain goats in the surrounding peaks. The bar here hosts live music on most Saturdays in summer, and the deck outside is great when the weather's warm. The Inn also offers 10 rooms to spend the night and an RV site.

Sunset Cafe and Loose Wolf Lounge

$$

Since 1936 this family-run Western-theme restaurant has been serving breakfast delectables that include the signature "Texas-size cinnamon rolls," plus boneless pork chops and eggs, corned-beef-hash Benedicts, and astoundingly large pancakes filled with bananas, chocolate chips, and peanut butter. They take their chowders seriously in St. Augustine, and many will tell you Sunset Grille's is the best—so good that it's poured over French fries as an appetizer. If you prefer a lighter version, a cup of the award-winning chowder is the perfect prelude to fresh fish dinners featuring Caribbean snapper and macadamia-crusted grouper. The popular restaurant, framed by a white picket fence, has a Key West vibe and two dining areas: a lively interior and an open-air second-story deck with distant ocean views.
