Finnegan's Bar & Grill

$$ | Universal Studios

This Irish pub would look just right in lower Manhattan during the Ellis Island era. The menu offers classic Irish comfort food like shepherd's pie, corned beef and cabbage, bangers and mash, and fish-and-chips, plus a healthy assortment of wines, cocktails, and beers, including Guinness on tap and a five-beer sampler. If shepherd's pie isn't your thing, opt instead for a steak, burger, entrée salad, or sandwich. Irish folk music, sometimes live, completes the theme in this beautiful, atmospheric place.

Fire

$

This hip, artisanal-pizza joint on the main drag serves up delicious pies in a modern brick-and-wood space below an industrial-style ceiling. Get seated in one of the bright red booths, and your server—likely with nose piercings—will offer a menu of items like “The Camino,” with roast chicken breast, bacon, red onion, two cheeses, chipotle barbecue sauce, and habanero sea salt, or some other sassy twist on the Italian pizza. Or you can sit at the bar, nibble cured olives and sip cucumber water, while you wait for your bubbling and gooey pie to emerge from the wood oven.

Fire & Ice

$$

These two restaurants have adjacent spots in the Pybus Public Market and a shared seating area, where you can enjoy pizza, pasta, antipasti, salami boards, soups, and sandwiches from Fire, and crepes, espresso drinks, and house-made gelato and sorbetto (sorbet) from Ice. Both are part of Visconti's Restaurant Group, which began in 1985 with classical Italian Visconti's in Wenatchee and now includes several restaurants in Wenatchee and Leavenworth.

Firefly

$$$ | Studio City

One minute you’re in an old library quickly converted into a lounge, the next you’re in the cabana of a modest country club. Yet Firefly's eclectic design is part of its appeal, and its excellent, if a bit pricey, French-American fare will make you forget all about it.

Firefly* Tapas Kitchen + Bar

$$ | Paradise Road

As the name suggests, this bistro focuses on small plates that encourage sharing and camaraderie, especially when it's the daily happy hour and/or paired with Firefly's signature sangrias or mojitos, both available by the glass or pitcher. The rough rule of thumb is for each person to order two plates, drawn from four categories: Chilled, Hot, Seafood, or Meat & Poultry. The range of choices is head-spinning, from beet salad and stuffed dates to empanadas, steamed mussels, and even manchego mac & cheese. In 2023, the original location moved a mile or so to a larger building (which some may remember as McCormick & Schmick's) on the edge of the Hughes Center office park. The atmosphere is completely different: plenty of windows and light paint replacing the dark and romantic, folk-art plastered original. There is also a second Firefly in Southwest Las Vegas (7355 S. Buffalo Drive).

Firestone's

$$$

With its embossed tin ceiling, dark-wood bar, and cheerful service, Firestone's serves up old-fashioned elegance with a nouvelle menu and a telephone book of a wine list. Locals rave about the food. Start with the lobster, mango, and avocado salad tossed with ginger-shallot vinaigrette and move on to the veal strip steak with tangy goat cheese gnocchi and oyster mushrooms, or the "shank of swine" braised in hard cider and served with sautéed bacon and bok choy. An easy, but sophisticated Sunday brunch can be kicked off with a bottomless mimosa.

Firewood

$$$$

At this lively establishment, dishes are cooked over an open flame, and antique leather chairs look out onto the open kitchen. Serving so-called heirloom American cuisine, the restaurant's seasonal, locally sourced menu changes frequently. Chef-owner John Murcko is no stranger to the Park City dining scene, as many of his local restaurants earned culinary fame in the past three decades, but Firewood is his first solo venture. The downstairs bar is not to be missed, with an industrial feel and a unique bar top finished with hundreds of nickels.

First and Last Tavern

$$

What looks to be a simple neighborhood spot south of downtown is actually one of the state's most hallowed Italian restaurants and pizza parlors, serving superb thin-crust pies and much, much more since 1936. The old-fashioned wooden bar is jammed most evenings with suburbia-bound daily-grinders; the main dining room, which is just as noisy, has a brick wall covered with celebrity photos.

939 Maple Ave., Hartford, CT, 06114, USA

Fish & Whistle

$

The fish-and-chips and fish sandwich served at this cozy, convivial spot are prepared with sustainability in mind: both dishes star pollock or hake, two “lesser loved” species every bit as delicious as overfished haddock or cod. Halibut, lobster, oysters, squid, and other seafood also routinely appear on the menu, all of it sourced fresh from Gulf of Maine waters. Make sure to leave room for dessert: even the soft-serve ice cream is made in-house, and one of the owners is a James Beard “Outstanding Pastry Chef” nominee.

Fish 101

$

The line out the door—especially during happy hour—is a clear sign you’re at the best place in North County to find locally sourced, sustainably caught fish at a great price. Owned by surfers-divers-fishermen, John Park and Ray Lowe, the vibe is SoCal at its best, with a chill staff serving fresh-shucked oysters, thick clam chowder, and fish sandwiches grilled to perfection; a chalkboard menu displays the day’s catch and what’s been shucked on ice. Fish plates like mahi-mahi with flash-fried Brussels sprouts and Baja fish tacos with killer salsas are great options. They've got their own micro brew and a second location in Cardiff. Don’t be surprised to see pro surfers and skateboarders enjoying a cold one: Fish 101 sponsors some of the biggest names in action sports.

Fish and Game

$$$$

Fatty Crab and Fatty 'Cue founder Zak Pelaccio decamped from Manhattan to Hudson to set up shop in a former blacksmithing shop, where he serves a delicious seven- or eight-course tasting menu. Be advised there's no vegetarian or pescatarian option, and dietary restrictions aren't accommodated so picky eaters should think twice. But more spontaneous eaters will enjoy the frequently changing menu and kitchen that will only use the highest quality and freshest ingredients. You could get lightly smoked salmon one night and rotisserie-roasted duck breast the next. Pelaccio's wife Jory Jayne Emde creates the restaurant's vinegars, pickles, and condiments. Reservations are tough to get, but a small selection of à la carte dishes is available at the bar and on the brick patio.

The Fish Camp at Geiger Key Marina

$

There's a strong hint of the Old Keys at this oceanside marina restaurant, where local fishermen stop for breakfast before heading out to catch the big one, and everyone shows up on Sunday for the barbecue from 4 to 9. "On the backside of paradise," as the sign says, its tiki structures overlook quiet mangroves at an RV park marina. Locals usually outnumber tourists. The all-day menu spans an ambitious array of sandwiches, tacos, and seafood.

Fish Guts

$ | Barrio Logan

Don't let the name sway you—Pablo Becker's temple to fresh seafood may very well serve the best fish tacos in town (and that's saying something in San Diego). There's usually a line before the doors even open, and the kitchen almost always sells out by midafternoon on weekends. It's a small menu of locally caught seafood, such as Baja shrimp, swordfish, and white fish, but everything is painstakingly prepared at the highest level with the best ingredients, so try a little of everything before the last order is gone for the day.
