Feast Market & Delicatessen

$$
Although this handsome space with Edison lights and a tile-back bar fits the bill when you're seeking wines and food (coffee, cheeses, sandwiches, prepared foods, cookies) to go, it's also an inviting dine-in restaurant with a spacious back patio offering glorious views of Mt. Hood. The kitchen sources regionally to create many of the enticing dishes, including roasted bone marrow with chimichurri and sea-salt grilled bread, and pan-seared Columbia salmon with red quinoa, leeks, and a pomegranate vinaigrette. Among the sandwiches, the classic Reuben is first-rate.

Federal Donuts

$ | Queen Village

In 2011, the owners of the acclaimed Zahav partnered with a team of Philly food entrepreneurs to open the first Federal Donuts, and Philly quickly fell in love with the whimsical doughnut-and-fried chicken concept. The mini-chain now runs many shops throughout the city, but this tiny flagship, on an unassuming corner in quiet Pennsport, is still going strong. FedNuts, as locals affectionately call it, offers both hot fresh and “fancy” doughnuts in an ever-changing array of flavors, plus fried chicken prepped in a variety of styles (za’atar-dusted; Korean-style chili garlic). They do excellent coffee and simple sandwiches, too, making it an everyday stop for neighborhood folks.

Federal Donuts – Parkway

$ | Parkway Museum District

Philly culinary stars Michael Solomonov and Steve Cook have kept this Philly-area mini-chain going strong since 2011 with a sometimes quirky but delicious short menu of fresh doughnuts and fried chicken, as well as good coffee drinks. The Parkway location, toward the rear of the building, is open into the early evening and has indoor and (in season) outdoor seating.

Recommended Fodor's Video

Fedora

$$$ | West Village

Subterranean Fedora was an ancient, little-patronized restaurant until 2011, when the old Italian owner left the building and restaurateur Gabe Stulman took over, revamping the place to attract a younger, hip crowd. The kitchen now churns out French Canadian–accented fare like garlic-cream-topped duck breast and scallops paired with bone marrow. Creative cocktails give the space a buzzy, almost clubby vibe. Fedora (the restaurant) will never be the same, and that might be a good thing.

Felipe's Taqueria

$ | Brattle Street

Cafés abound on Brattle Street, but Felipe's is a good bet for fresh ingredients and authentic recipes that build out a quick hit menu of Mexican grab-and-go dishes and bottle opener--required Mexican sodas. Start off with their salsa fresca, queso, or guac, then fill up on heaping Super Burritos, Baja-style tacos, and nachos. Finish off with flan, churro, or a brownie.

The huge selection offers everything from traditional regional dishes such as turtle soup and fried oysters to surprises like crayfish-smothered pork chops and grits. Service is precise but friendly. Fellingham's Restaurant Sports Bar

$

With dark-wood furniture, wood beam ceilings, and Yankees memorabilia on almost every wall, this one of the few true old-school neighborhood sports-themed bar and grills you'll find hereabouts. It's all very un-Hamptons. Established in 1980, it probably hasn't changed much since then, and the locals like it that way. There's no cocktail menu, no local wines, and if you ask what type of beer they have, they'll simply says "cold." But if you like steak, you'll love the 16-oz porterhouse marinated in Budweiser and ketchup; corn fritters are served with a zesty, creamy horseradish sauce; and if you just want a chili dog, you can get one here. The prices are also very un-Hamptons, and it's open year-round.

Fenwick's 300

$$ | Melrose

Bright and airy, this diner-style restaurant features a stand-alone coffee bar within the dining room, where Bongo Java’s coffee and signature drinks are paired with thoughtful and hearty brunch selections and breakfast cocktails. The large center bar is topped with a bowling lane, a nod to the building’s past life and the source of the restaurant's name since the kitchen tries to roll a perfect game every time.

Ferdinando's Focacceria

$$
Basic decor, a pressed-tin roof, and family photos set the completely unpretentious, old-school mood at this laid-back neighborhood temple of Sicilian comfort food. Everything is delicious, but standouts include the arancini (rice balls), the pork-chop pizzaiola (cooked with peppers, tomatoes, and capers), and the panelle special, in which chickpea fritters meet ricotta in a sandwich with delicious results.

Fernández The Bull

$$

You'll get authentic, critically acclaimed, unpretentious Cuban specialties at this simple storefront café a few miles inland. Stick to the basics, like the lemony lechon asado (slow-roasted pork basted with garlic) or ropa vieja (shreds of flank steak simmered in tomato sauce with heaps of peppers and onions). Prices are good, considering that one entrée is enough for dinner and lunch the next day and that it comes with salads, big slabs of toasted garlic bread, and two sides. The bar is wine-and-beer only; the mojitos are faux-jitos but still pretty tasty.

Ferraro's Ristorante

$$$

Like time-traveling to Vegas’s vintage days when upscale restaurants were quiet and atmospheric, venerable Ferraro’s features a dark and decidedly romantic dining room with candles on every table, and a pricey menu stocked with steaks, fresh-made pastas, and Mediterranean-style seafood. Around since 1985 and in this location since 2009, this fine Italian eatery offers a cheaper happy hour of small plates nightly from 5 to 7 pm and bigger feasts throughout the evening. Among the popular entrées not found at most Italian restaurants are the popular stewed rabbit with mushrooms served over polenta, and tripe served in a spicy tomato sauce. And you can’t beat the signature veal osso buco.

Fête

$$ | Chinatown

At lunch, regulars pack into this tiny, brick-walled space for the burgers and specials; at dinner, they come for the pasta and locally sourced seafood dishes or the to-die-for twice-fried Kauai chicken with grits and collard greens. Here, you'll probably get cozy with the table next to you as waitstaffers glide between tables with full trays and great attitudes. There's also seating in a smaller, quieter, upstairs library. The specials are fabulous, as are the craft cocktails and the beer list.

Fiaschetteria Pistoia

$$ | West Village

Not all the grappa in this charming, diminutive Italian restaurant will help you pronounce its name, but you won't care once you tuck into the fabulous pasta dishes made in the open kitchen. The menu's focus is on Tuscany with a few nods south to Rome. The pappardelle al ragù is rich and satisfying. Same for the tagliolini laced with sea urchin. But for first timers and twenty-first timers, it's impossible to pass up the cacio e pepe, a simple, gooey, cheesy Roman pasta dish that tastes like it just magically materialized from the Eternal City.

FIELDTRIP

$ | Harlem

The mantra here is "rice is culture." Chef JJ Johnson, a James Beard Award--winning chef, founded this rice bowl shop in 2019 with a focus on heirloom grains and the countries and places from which they're harvested. Top bowls include crispy chicken with barbecue sauce over Carolina gold rice, sticky rice with shrimp in a green curry sauce, and an Indian-inspired veggie bowl with basmati rice. The crab pockets (Johnson's version of a crab rangoon with garlic herbed cream cheese) are a delicious snack or side. Wash it all down with a pineapple ginger lemonade.

Fiesta Guadalajara Restaurant

$$

Authentic and family friendly, this Mexican restaurant serves good food in huge portions. Try the chiles rellenos, super nachos, and especially the Chile Colorado: fork-tender beef simmered in a savory red-pepper sauce. The appetizer combo plate is a meal in itself, and to feed an army, order Fiesta Fajitas. There's a second location in Grand Junction.
