Crawl through the little front door built for the "wee people" and you'll understand why this restaurant is the center of Tipperary Hill, Syracuse's Irish neighborhood. (Don't worry: there's also a regular-size entrance.) Green beer flows freely every March 17, and corned beef and cabbage and open-faced Reubens lead the menu year-round. Also available: shepherd's pie, seafood, and burgers. The cozy wood-paneled, two-story pub has several fireplaces. There's a full bar and Irish bands play Thursday through Sunday. Patio dining is a summer option.

Since 1934, this pubby place has served up its specialty sandwiches, among them a stack of ham, turkey, and Swiss with onions and Russian dressing on marble rye. Also on the menu: pot roast on a roll with caramelized onions and cheddar; sesame-encrusted yellowfin tuna salad; and, for dinner, lobster ravioli in a crab-vodka sauce and barbecue ribs. It's a huge space, with two dining rooms—one a true pub with wooden booths, checkerboard floors, and '50s-era sports pennants, and the other a sunroom with a fireplace at one end. Sidewalk seating is available in summer. The gigantic, multipage beer menu, with rare brews from around the world, is sure to impress.

The chrome-trimmed diner, run by the Caratozzolo family, serves nothing except tasty comfort food. Eggplant Parmesan, linguine with clam sauce, and liver and onions are popular dishes. The lasagna is made from an old family recipe. The homemade pies—especially the coconut cream and raspberry—are glorious. Connie's is 3 mile west of Seneca Falls.

In a rambling farmhouse painted a lovely shade of yellow, Cucina serves up some of the region's best Italian fare. There's a huge communal table if you want to meet other foodies, fireside tables for chilly fall dining, and tables on a wraparound porch that are perfect for romantic summer evenings. The menu includes a surprising array of pizzas and pastas, all reasonably priced, as well as heartier dishes like slow-roasted salmon with corn pudding or seared scallops with vegetable succotash. The meats, cheeses, and produce all come from organic farms in the nearby Hudson Valley. Italy is the inspiration for the long wine list, although there are also selections from France and farther afield.

There's simply nowhere else in Williamsburg like this rustic enoteca: You'd have to sail to Sardinia to savor a comparable meal. Pastas highlight the island's specialties, among them fregola (similar to couscous) with pistachio pesto and mascarpone, and the all-Italian wine list has plenty of accessible choices to pair with the artisanal cheeses. These come with pane carasau, a thin, crispy Sardinian flatbread best simply drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. It's all so authentic, you can practically smell the sea air and the sheep.

Dancing Bears

This lively first-floor restaurant and bar at High Peaks Resort has been a hit with locals and out-of-town visitors ever since it opened in fall 2008. The menu has classics like big hamburgers and homemade pizza as well as steak. It's also great for breakfast.

Dancing Cat Saloon

In a pretty red farmhouse at the entrance to Bethel Woods Center for the Performing Arts, the Dancing Cat Saloon—sister restaurant to the Catskill Distilling Company—is hands-down one of the best eateries in the area and a great place to dine before a concert or after a trip to the museum. The dining room is decorated with musical instruments—appropriate enough, given its location and the fact that the Dancing Cat often has live music. A favorite hangout spot is the deck, where you can sit under umbrellas overlooking the field of “Stray Cat” sculptures in front the of Catskill Distilling Company. The food ranges from expertly put-together burgers to the satisfying main courses, which includes the signature pork chops. Jazz brunch is also popular, especially with locals.

You may want to reserve ahead, as the place is always packed.

Dave's Grill

Once a fisherman's haunt, this unpretentious yet stylish bistro at the Montauk fishing docks is known for offering the freshest seafood, including the signature cioppino, in addition to creative steak and vegetarian dishes. Indoor seating is in a small, candlelit room or a cozy adjoining bar; outdoor seating is on a deck next to the harbor. For dessert, try the famous "Chocolate Bag."

This is a popular spot, but they'll take same-day reservations—call after 4:15.

David's Brisket House Deli

This storefront deli doesn't look like much, but several things make it a standout. One is the pastrami, available as a sandwich or with eggs for breakfast; another is the fact that you can order a "small" sandwich—definitely enough for average appetites—rather than the typical oversize versions that you get at places like Katz's. And then there's the fact that this local institution really represents the neighborhood's diversity: it was originally owned by Jewish immigrants from Yemen and Russia but was then passed on to a Muslim partner, whose family now runs it. (Note that the shop is closed Friday from noon to 2 for prayer service.)

The outrageously good heroes at Defonte's Sandwich Shop, overstuffed with cured meats, mozzarella, chicken parm, or fried eggplant, have made this storefront a Brooklyn institution. And after almost a century in business, they've certainly had time to perfect their recipes.
