Dream Midtown

$$ | 210 W. 55th St., New York, NY, 10019, USA

This Midtown hotel specializes in style more than comfort, but for the price it's still quite livable, despite some over-the-top design features and the noise from scenesters headed to the rooftop bar. The dreamscape starts in the lobby, which contains an enormous two-story cylindrical neon-lighted aquarium. Rooms have stark white walls, modern furniture, and psychedelic patterned headboards. Stay here if you love modern touches like plasma TVs, texting with the multilingual staff, and a velvet-rope bar with views at PHD Terrace. You can also get sociable with games at Fishbowl, and dine on rustic Italian fare at Serafina. There's a second Dream Hotel in the Meatpacking District.

Pros

  • Dreamy bedding
  • PHD Terrace penthouse bar
  • Free Wi-Fi and in-room technology

Cons

Dune Deck Beach Resort

$$$$ | 379 Dune Rd., Westhampton Beach, NY, 11978, USA

The accomodations are not fancy and it's not cheap, but what you're getting is a location right on the beach in the Hamptons and a low-key atmosphere for a relaxed getaway "free of attitude and ego." Some rooms have ocean views, and some are adjoining, which are a great option for families and larger parties. Bicyles are complimentary, as are the weekend yoga classes and tennis courts. The on-site restaurant, Saltwater Grill, has live music on weekends. Memberships for the pool and facilities are available.

Dune Point

$$$ | 134 Lewis Walk, Fire Island, NY, 11782, USA

This is one of the few nice, co-ed places to stay in this ever-popular, gay-friendly, and notoriously fun Fire Island community, with apartments on or near the ocean and a common ocean deck providing direct beach access. In a quiet part of the community, it's just a short walk to town and the nightlife, and provides a quiet refuge from Cherry Grove's wild side. Each apartment has a simple, modern design and a kitchen or kitchenette.

Eastwind Oliverea Valley

$$$$ | 212 McKenley Hollow Rd., Big Indian, NY, 12410, USA

Ensconced in the forests of Balsam and Eagle Mountains, Eastwind Oliverea's Scandi-chic cabins and rooms offer an opportunity to unplug without sacrificing comforts. Standalone cabins, some with lofted sleeping areas and outdoor decks, offer the most luxurious "glamping" experience, though the price reflects the added space and privacy. The cozy onsite restaurant, Dandelion, offers a compact but delectable menu of contemporary American dishes and craft cocktails. There is no continental breakfast, but for an extra charge, you can order a breakfast basket---filled with morning treasures like crispy pastries, hard-boiled eggs, and coffee---and have it delivered to your room. Cell service is nonexistent or extremely spotty at best throughout the grounds, so come prepared.

Pros

  • Delicious onsite restaurant
  • Complimentary s'mores kits
  • Walking distance from McKenley Hollow Trailhead

Cons

  • Compact bathrooms
  • No jacuzzi or fitness facility
  • Zero cell service

Ecce

$$$ | 19 Silverfish Rd., Narrowsburg, NY, 12719, USA

Ecce is Latin for "behold," and the word fits: from a seemingly precarious perch on a ridge overlooking the Delaware, travelers get a true eagle's eye view of the river's majesty from every room. Sitting on the main deck imparts a feeling not unlike being suspended 300 feet over a valley. It's not unusual for resident raptors, eagles, ospreys, and hawks to float at eye level, riding thermals in search of prey far below. Trails lace the inn's 60 acres, and a hammock graces rock outcropping above the resort. Myriad outdoor activities are close by, including hiking, rafting, kayaking, and skiing. Innkeepers Alan and Kurtis have meticulously created a serene getaway that's removed, but not distant, from other Catskill attractions.

Pros

  • Close to activities
  • Superb breakfast
  • Incredible views

Cons

  • You have to drive to most attractions

The Emerson Resort & Spa

$$$ | 5340 Rte. 28, Mount Tremper, NY, 12457, USA
A top-to-bottom renovation made this longtime favorite once again one of the region's best destinations, especially for families who take advantage of activities in and around the hotel, from fishing and tubing in the summer to skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, as well as excellent on-site amenities, like a spa and restaurant. Head to the nearby towns of Phoenicia and Woodstock for an afternoon of antiquing, pamper yourself with couples massages and relaxing body wraps in the spa, or catch some rays by the pool. The restaurant draws locals for its farm-to-table cuisine. Rooms in the Adirondacks-style lodge have beautiful wood trim, peaked ceilings, and a relaxed vibe. Those in the inn are more modern and include touches like gas fireplaces and jetted tubs.

Pros

  • Plentiful amenities
  • Close to area attractions
  • Top-notch restaurant

The Empire Hotel

$$ | 44 W. 63rd St., New York, NY, 10023, USA

Overlooking Lincoln Center, one block from Central Park, and convenient to Midtown shopping and sights, the showstoppers of this hotel are a seasonal outdoor pool and a rooftop lounge with live music and entertainment. Rooms are well maintained and comfortable, although the patterned floors and wallpaper in earthy colors in guest rooms could do with updating to be more in line with the bold and graphic lobby. Although there's no on-site restaurant, lively PJ Clarke's is on the ground floor, and the hotel's location across the street from Lincoln Center means there are ample restaurants, cafés, and quick bites within a few steps.

Pros

  • Outdoor pool, a rarity in Manhattan hotels
  • Rooftop bar with splashy red neon sign
  • Great location for culture, sights, and Central Park

Cons

  • No on-site restaurant
