The Mercer

$$$$ | 147 Mercer St., New York, NY, 10012, USA

The Mercer is superbly situated in the heart of SoHo's myriad name-brand stores, although you wouldn't know it once inside the lobby, a minimalist oasis created by acclaimed French designer Christian Liaigre. Most guest rooms are generously sized, with high ceilings and walk-in closets, but the lowest-priced rooms are a tight 250 square feet. Dark African woods and custom-designed furniture upholstered in muted solids lend serenity with sophistication. Some bathrooms feature decadent two-person marble tubs surrounded by mirrors. Beware the inconsistent service, which runs from friendly to indifferent.

Pros

  • Great location
  • Sophisticated design touches
  • Celebrity sightings in lobby

Cons

  • Service inconsistent
  • Some tight rooms
  • No on-site fitness center or spa

Millbrook Country House

$$ | 506 Sharon Tpke., Millbrook, NY, 12545, USA

The house, built in 1810, was remodeled in 1838 when classical detailing was all the rage (witness the majestic columns in the front hall). If the interior recalls 17th-century Italy, it's because most of the furniture came from the current owner's palazzo near Modena. Elegant marquetry tables grace the parlors and lush silk draperies dress many windows. Extensive gardens surround the house, and a sculpture garden displays works by local artists. If arranged three days in advance, guests can order a three-course dinner prepared by your hosts.

Pros

  • Afternoon tea

North Branch Inn

$$ | 869 N. Branch Rd., NY, 12766, USA
One of the newest properties in the Catskills, the North Branch Inn—a labor of love for the husband-and-wife team of Sims Foster and Kirsten Harlow Foster—is tucked away in a tiny town of the same name, and has lots of fun finds, like a screening room with a row of seats from Radio City Music Hall and an elegantly curved bar from the 1939 World's Fair. The best just might be the two-lane bowling alley, uncovered when this 1868 clapboard structure was renovated in 2015. In addition to a wood-paneled restaurant serving foods sourced from around New York State, there are five cozy guest rooms in the main building, where you'll find original woodwork and wide-plank floors.
