Arlo NoMad

$ | 11 E. 31st St., New York, NY, 10016, USA

With the Empire State Building just two blocks north, Koreatown a few blocks west, the Flatiron District seven blocks south, and easy access to subway lines, bars, and restaurants, the compact but stylish Arlo NoMad is perfectly positioned for the visitor who cares more about proximity and value than floor space and amenities. Rooms feature space-saving design (under-bed storage, a pegboard closet system, no-tub bathrooms, etc.) and trendy decor, but they really are not designed to linger in: get ready and get going, once you have appreciated those floor-to-ceiling Empire State Building views from the Sky Rooms and the popular rooftop bar with an interactive glass floor tile and Middle Eastern influenced menu. The Arnold House

$$ | 839 Shandelee Rd., Livingston Manor, NY, 12758, USA
With a history that dates back more than a century, The Arnold House helped make this part of the Catskills a must-go destination for hip city dwellers looking for a weekend in the country. The 10 guest rooms blend old and new seamlessly, with antique writing desks and quilts that preserve the country aesthetic alongside industrial touches like metal chairs and swing-out reading lamps. There's also a two-bedroom lake house that makes this property perfect for family reunions and weekend escapes. A spiral staircase takes you down to a rustic tavern, where locally caught trout (lightly breaded and pan-fried) is among the favorites. In warm weather you can sit on the deck and count the stars. On summer weekends there's often live music in the barn out back. For relaxation, you can book a treatment at the spa or just wander down to the pretty little pond.

Athenaeum Hotel

$$$$ | 26 S. Lake Dr., Chautauqua, NY, 14722, USA

One of few options within the Chautauqua Institution gates, this Victorian hotel faces Chautauqua Lake and is steps from the amphitheater. Opened in 1881, the Athenaeum frequently hosted Thomas Edison and was one of the first electrified hotels in the country. These days, however, modern advances (like central air-conditioning) are lacking, furnishings are threadbare, and the building is in dire need of restoration. It's pricey for the quality of rooms, though three meals a day are included. We've included the hotel in this book not because we strongly recommend it but because it is one of only two hotels on the grounds of the institute, and for some, location trumps quality and cost. Dinner (for those not staying at the hotel) is a five-course prix-fixe affair.

Pros

  • Fantastic location if attending the Chautauqua Institution
  • Friendly staff
  • Good food

Cons

  • Deteriorated
  • Expensive
  • Parking lot is a golf-cart ride or five-minute walk away
