Sagamore Resort

$$$$ | 110 Sagamore Rd., Bolton Landing, NY, 12814, USA Fodor's Choice

Occupying a 72-acre island on Lake George, the Sagamore is an escape to a bygone era. Accommodations in the 1883 colonial-revival main house have views of the lake or gardens. The decor, including marble bathrooms and handsome wood furniture, is elegant but not formal, while accommodations in the newer lodge buildings are country-chic. Lodge rooms have garden views; suites have gas fireplaces and a terrace with a lake view. The separate condo units (starting at about $600 a night in season) have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, a dining area, and two lake-view terraces; leather couches, Adirondack-style furniture, and wood-burning fireplaces contribute to the lodge feel here. Notable facilities here include the spa and the sailing school.

Pros

  • So much to do, you won't have to leave the resort

Cons

  • Breakfast only included in some packages

Saugerties Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast

$$ | 168 Lighthouse Dr., Saugerties, NY, 12477, USA Fodor's Choice

A ½-mile hike from a small parking lot near a Coast Guard station brings you to this romantic hideout, a restored lighthouse overlooking the Hudson River. Accommodations are simple and rustic—you make up your own bed at night, and the shared bathroom has a composting toilet—but the two bedrooms are bright and have expansive views. Be sure to climb to the lantern house, which looks across the river at the Clermont estate. Outdoor decks make for idyllic picnics; at low tide stairs lead to a beach.

Stickett Inn

$$ | 3380 Rte. 97, Barryville, NY, 12719, USA Fodor's Choice
In a handsome building with rough-hewn columns holding up the front porch, this rustic-hip retreat in the riverside hamlet of Barryville has just four suites: one has a private balcony with a spiral staircase leading down to a hot tub, while another has a glassed-in steam shower and a cold-plunge trough tub. In another room, a rain shower is positioned above a round metal tub big enough for two. Best of all is the separate two-bedroom cabin, which calls to mind the region's kitschy motels with a Formica dinette set, cabinets covered with paint-by-numbers art, and an Elvis Presley lamp.

Pros

  • One-of-a-kind design
  • Friendly place
  • Walk to nearby eateries

Cons

  • Near to town so not very peaceful

White Pine Camp

$$$ | White Pine Rd; off Rte. 86, Paul Smiths, NY, 12970, USA Fodor's Choice

The camp, built in 1907, has hosted many prominent guests. It was known as the "summer White House" after President Calvin Coolidge vacationed here in 1926. The location, amid majestic pines on 35 acres on Lake Osgood, is a big draw. The property encompasses several cabins, most of them 100 feet away from the water. All have kitchens or kitchenettes and fireplaces or woodstoves and are fully furnished. Only six cabins are open all year. From late June through Labor Day, the minimum stay is a week; a two-night minimum is usually required the rest of the year. Because the property is of historic and architectural interest, small tours sometimes come through the camp, including the guest cabins. The camp is 12 mi northwest of Saranac Lake.

Pros

  • Historic and serene
  • Use of canoes, kayaks, and rowboats is complimentary

Cons

  • Remote from restaurants and shops

William Henry Miller Inn

$$$ | 303 N Aurora St., Ithaca, NY, 14850, USA Fodor's Choice

Rooms at this inn, an 1880 Queen Anne downtown, are imaginatively decorated to highlight alcoves, built-in shelves, curved walls, and steeple views of the city center. Furnishings are traditional and pretty: European armoires, cherrywood sleigh beds and four-poster beds, and wood shutters. Breakfast is excellent, with treats like a homemade English muffin topped with scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, and asparagus, plus fresh juice and assorted muffins. A dessert buffet is offered in the evening.

Pros

  • Modern bathrooms

William Seward Inn

$$ | 6645 S. Portage Rd., Westfield, NY, 14787, USA Fodor's Choice

This lovely 1837 Greek Revival inn sits on a secluded, grassy property between Westfield and Chautauqua. Rooms are traditionally furnished with period antiques and reproductions: some are dressed in flirty florals and ruffles, others have a more tailored look, with handsome four-poster beds; a few have balconies and fireplaces. The modern-built Carriage House rooms are the largest, with double whirlpool baths. Big, gourmet breakfasts, which could include amaretto-soaked French toast or four-cheese-and-tarragon omelet, are served in the cozy dining room.

Pros

  • New owners (2008) renovating all rooms in detailed period style
  • Congenial rather than stuffy
  • Care taken in details

Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC

Though the nearby Standard, High Line has stolen some of its thunder, there's still plenty to draw guests to this Meatpacking District pioneer, starting with the sleek rooms that overlook the city or the Hudson River and the rooftop deck with a 45-foot heated pool. Hotel on Rivington

$$ | 107 Rivington St., New York, NY, 10002, USA
Hotel on Rivington, Lower East Side
The Lounge at CO-OP Food & Drink

A pioneer when it opened back in 2004, this hip hotel is still a great choice if you want to be in the thick of the neighborhood's dining and nightlife scene, with the added bonus of stunning views. NoMo SoHo

$$ | 9 Crosby St., New York, NY, 10013, USA
Mondrian Soho, SoHo
Mondrian Soho

Fairy-tale-inspired Miami style and a chic SoHo vibe make this hotel a winner for anyone looking for a downtown pied-à-terre. Standard rooms are on the small side, but with the serene blue-and-white color scheme, mirrored surfaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows, the design (and the striking views) helps overcome space concerns. Opt for a room on one of the higher floors and shower with sweeping skyline views (but leave modesty at home: showers have floor-to-ceiling glass, too). Downstairs, the public spaces are classy and inviting, with a beautiful arched passageway lined with ivy and sparkling lights serving as the entrance, a pebbled garden with a swing to sit in, and an intimate restaurant set in a greenhouse-like space, lit by candles and chandeliers.

Pros

  • Affordable for the location
  • Pretty garden with NoMo Kitchen restaurant
  • Fabulous views from floor-to-ceiling windows

Cons

Sixty LES

$$ | 190 Allen St., New York, NY, 10002, USA
Thompson LES, Lower East Side
Courtesy Thompson LES

This hotel is a great embodiment of the vibe of the neighborhood inhabitants: hip, but friendly when you're acquainted. Rooms are stylishly stark, black-and-white affairs, with low platform beds whose headboards are light boxes displaying works by the photographer Lee Friedlander. The desk space can be cramped, and although the windows are big, come nighttime, rooms can feel seriously dark. Suites, on the building's corners, have balconies with sweeping views of both downtown and Midtown—some of the best in the city. The neighborhood is a nexus for nightlife, and the hotel's bar is a great place to start.

Pros

  • In the heart of LES nightlife
  • Great views from suites
  • Cool bar scene

Cons

  • Occasionally snobby staff
  • Rooms are stylish but dark
  • Some guests complain about noise

Wythe Hotel

Wythe Hotel, New York City
Courtesy of Wythe Hotel

A former cooperage on the Brooklyn waterfront has found new life as the Wythe Hotel, a stunner for its Manhattan-skyline views, locally sourced design touches, and amenities. The factory building near the Brooklyn Brewery, built in 1901, utilized reclaimed pine from the original building to create rustic ceilings. Rooms have a Brooklyn sensibility, with polished concrete floors (plus underfloor heating), local custom-patterned wallpaper, and surround sound controlled by your iPhone. The menu of the cozy ground-floor restaurant, Le Crocodile, is undeniably French-inspired and the rooftop Bar Blondeau is a good spot for cocktails and Manhattan views.

Pros

  • High tea service in the afternoon
  • Fabulous views from rooms
  • Destination-worthy restaurant

Cons

  • Somewhat removed from the subway
  • Not all rooms have a skyline view

Archer Hotel New York

$$ | 45 W. 38th St., New York, NY, 10018, USA

Rooftop bar Spyglass, with its killer view of the Empire State Building, is the star of this boutique property just south of Bryant Park, with its subtly industrial-inspired look that nods to the neighborhood’s past. The Archer has rooms that feel contemporary, if a bit cramped (standard rooms average 180 square feet). Still, if you’re not looking for space and don’t care about amenities like a gym or spa, this makes for a well-priced, conveniently located stay. Standouts of the property include the gorgeous, subway-tiled bathrooms stocked with Malin+Goetz products and Frette robes.

Pros

  • Whimsical design and ambience
  • Nice bathrooms and robes
  • Reasonably priced for Manhattan

Cons

  • Small rooms
  • Lack of amenities, including gym or spa
  • Convenient but unglamorous location
