THE BEST HOTEL IN USA

Yowie

$ | 226 South St., Philadelphia, PA, 19147, USA
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

In a corner property on South Street, what started as a shop selling cutting-edge home goods and clothing now includes a 13-room hotel and a café. The brain-child of Philadelphia local Shannon Maldonado, the hotel relies on invisible service, meaning there are no on-site staff, and there are thoughtful touches like curated recommendation cards in every room and a mini bar that leans heavily on local products. The real draw here is the location, which puts you in the center of one of Philadelphia's most charming neighborhoods.

Pros

  • Modern design
  • Excellent location
  • On-site cafe

Cons

  • No concierge or on-site staff
  • No on-site parking
  • Can be loud at night

The Asticou Hotel

$$$$ | 15 Peabody Rd., Northeast Harbor, ME, 04662, USA Fodor's Choice

Dramatically perched above serene Northeast Harbor, this vestige of the Gilded Age has played host to the likes of Astors, Vanderbilts, and Rockefellers since it was built in 1883. Destroyed by fire in 1899, the original inn was rebuilt in 1901, and a $28 million makeover, completed in the summer of 2025, not only restored the property to its former historic elegance, some might say it arguably surpassed it. The rooms, 17 spa suites, and 15 cottages are designed to mimic the surrounding coast and woods, in hues both deep and light, from bark and moss to pale pinks. The restaurant, Dahlia’s, has a dedicated following. As for the spectacular gardens that spill around the grounds and pool—filled with statues, lush hydrangeas, and pollinators galore—they're reason enough to warrant a stay.

Pros

  • Bluefin sashimi with hibiscus ponzu
  • Splendid views of NorthEast Harbor
  • Grand historic-meets-hip interior design

Cons

  • 11 miles southwest of Bar Harbor
  • Wi-Fi service can be spotty in certain areas on the property
  • Not all rooms have ocean views

Courtyard by Marriott Anaheim Theme Park Entrance

$$ | 1420 S. Harbor Blvd., Anaheim, CA, 92802, USA Fodor's Choice

Near the entrance to both Disney parks, families love coming back to this hotel after visiting the parks to play in the Surfside Waterpark. The colorful fun splash zone, waterslides, and a heated swimming pool, is not typical of Courtyard by Marriott. Rooms with microwaves, mini-refrigerators, coffee makers, and sturdy bunk beds cater to groups and families. Room options include ADA suites, and spacious king suites with two sets of bunk beds. The double queen suites also have bunks that accommodate six people. The water park and some guest rooms overlook Disneyland's iconic Matterhorn; other rooms have views of the firework shows. There is a Life Fitness center open all day, and a Bistro that provides quick breakfast, lunch, and dinner items to sit and enjoy before heading back across the street to the Disney parks. A souvenir and mini-mart on the lobby level offers snacks, drinks, and Disney-themed apparel and accessories.

In the 1920s, it was a posh beach club catering to the city's elite; now the Casa del Mar is one of SoCal's most luxurious beachfront hotels. One of only two hotels in the area that's truly on the sand, this historic property boasts a heavenly lobby, three extravagant two-story penthouses, a raised deck and ocean-view pool, an indulgent spa, and an elegant ballroom. Popular with celebrities and foreign dignitaries, the pet-friendly property houses guest rooms designed to evoke a Mediterranean estate with transitional coastal furnishings. They're filled with contemporary tech amenities like lighting control panels, an indulgent minibar, and supremely comfortable beds with sumptuous white and blue Italian-designed linens. Bathrooms are gorgeous, with Italian marble, massage tubs, and glass-enclosed showers, as well as luxe Diptyque toiletries and a "beauty chest" filled with goodies available for purchase, like face masks, frangipani spray, and even chargers. Sea-hued, breezy Terrazza delights locals and tourists with beachfront dining; impeccable yet understated service; fine cuisine; and more than 100 bottles of wine on the menu. Kona Tiki Hotel

$$$ | 75-5968 Alii Dr., Kailua-Kona, HI, 96745, USA Fodor's Choice

This small, oceanfront, walk-up hotel about a mile south of downtown Kailua Village, with modest, pleasantly decorated rooms on the ocean, is probably the best deal in town. Some might call it dated or old-fashioned, while others would say it imbues a cool vintage Hawaiiana charm. All rooms have fridges, but the lack of TVs is a proud tradition the hotel has maintained since the 1950s. Who needs TV when you have the ocean this close? A deposit is required, and you will need to book well in advance to secure a room.

  • Oceanfront lanai on every room
  • Free parking

Noble + Proper

$$ | 670 Jeffries Rd., Big Bear Lake, CA, 92315, USA Fodor's Choice

Big Bear lodging went up a big notch with the opening of this property, which is laid out like a microvillage with a main road draped in market lights and eight, uniquely themed, superbly decorated (with mid-century and other vintage touches) two-story cabins. Private patios with barbecues, cedar soaking tubs, and beach cruisers are other amenities that make you feel right at home. The keyless entry and lack of a lobby add an element of privacy and freedom. Although there's no on-site restaurant, Big Bear Village is about a mile away.

A former cooperage on the Brooklyn waterfront has found new life as the Wythe Hotel, a stunner for its Manhattan-skyline views, locally sourced design touches, and amenities. The factory building near the Brooklyn Brewery, built in 1901, utilized reclaimed pine from the original building to create rustic ceilings. Rooms have a Brooklyn sensibility, with polished concrete floors (plus underfloor heating), local custom-patterned wallpaper, and surround sound controlled by your iPhone. The menu of the cozy ground-floor restaurant, Le Crocodile, is undeniably French-inspired and the rooftop Bar Blondeau is a good spot for cocktails and Manhattan views.

Just blocks from the beach in a building that dates back to 1888, this historic landmark had its chance to shine after a 5-year restoration project that updated the old hardware store with modern amenities and finishes. Despite the major overhaul, developers maintained the original brick façade and historical integrity of the street-corner powerhouse. The self-check-in system operates Airbnb style, with instructions texted directly to your phone. Bright and airy rooms are flooded with light, with firm mattresses and sound-muting windows that ensure a deep sleep. From the ground floor, guests have access to four dining establishments including the Lobby Tiki Bar, Stone Beer Garden, Frankie’s Cocktail Lounge, and the cleverly designed Succulent Coffee (a must-see).
