Green Mountain Inn

$$ | 18 Main St., Stowe, VT, 05672, USA

Smack-dab in the center of Stowe village, this classic redbrick inn has been welcoming guests since 1833; rooms in the main building and the annex feel like a country inn, while the newer additions refine with added luxury and space. The leather-heavy Whip Bar & Grill serves excellent, meaty, American comfort food.

Green Valley Ranch Resort, Spa & Casino

$ | 2300 Paseo Verde Pkwy., Henderson, NV, 89052, USA

Locals have long known that Green Valley is a low-key, refined resort that prefers style over bustle (the Strip is a 15-minute drive away). Granted, the casino floor and adjacent shopping plaza known as The District are busy and wide-ranging in their budget appeal, but the atmosphere becomes more quietly upscale and sophisticated in the hotel area and its 8-acre \"Backyard\" reserved for guests, both offering distant views of the Strip. The sprawling pool area includes The Pond, which offers poolside bottle service, day and night. Upstairs, in the hotel towers, modern and spacious rooms have cherrywood furniture, plush chairs, and beds with down comforters. There's a slew of both fine and casual restaurants and shops, including the new Ortikia Mediterranean Grill, which opened in spring 2024.

Pros

  • Sophisticated casino
  • Proximity to malls that offer great shopping
  • Newer sports book

Cons

  • 15 minutes from the Strip
  • Not much in the immediate area
  • Can be overrun with locals

Greyfield Inn

$$$$ | Cumberland Island, GA, 31558, USA

Once described as a "Tara by the sea," this turn-of-the-last-century Carnegie family home is Cumberland Island's only accommodation. Built in 1900 for Margaret Ricketson, Thomas and Lucy Carnegie's daughter, the inn is filled with period antiques, family portraits, and original furniture that evoke the country elegance of a bygone era. Greyfinch Chatham Inn

$$ | 946 Main St., Chatham, MA, 02633, USA

From the outside, it may look like just another roadside motel, but beyond the plain-Jane facade are freshly renovated king and queen guest rooms with Keurig machines, mini-refrigerators, and modern design (lots of gray, lively wallpaper in bathrooms.) The Griswold Inn

$$ | 36 Main St., Essex, CT, 06426, USA

Two-plus centuries of catering to changing tastes at one of America's oldest continuously operating inns has resulted in a kaleidoscope of decor—some Colonial, a bit of Federal, a little Victorian—with just as many modern touches as necessary to meet present-day expectations. Although many of the rooms in "the Gris," as it's affectionately known, feel a bit worn, the point here is more to soak up history than to feel pampered. Chefs at the restaurant prepare country-style American fare, and there's a Tap Room—built in 1738 as a schoolhouse—that's fun for after-dinner drinks.

Pros

  • In the heart of historic downtown Essex
  • Rich history—since opening in 1776
  • Fun pub with live music every night

Cons

  • Rooms above/near the Tap Room are noisy until 11 pm
  • No room TVs—head for the common room if you must
  • Some rooms are quite small

Grouse Mountain Lodge

$$$$ | 2 Fairway Dr., Whitefish, MT, 59937, USA

Always a Whitefish favorite, Grouse Mountain is consistently booked solid in July and August. Public tennis courts and cross-country trails border the lodge, and there's a 36-hole golf course next door. Off-season you can book some bargain activity packages. Thoroughly modern, it has a sunny lounge area with a lacquered slate floor, elk-horn chandeliers, soft-cushioned furniture, and a tall fireplace. The Grill at Grouse ($$–$$$$) focuses on steaks, ribs, and Pacific Northwest salmon baked on a cedar plank. Food is also served outside from mid-April to mid-October on the deck and patio ($–$$$), where there's shade and a large stone firepit. The Wine Room can be reserved for a five-course dinner expertly paired with wines from their impressive collection. Recently renovated guest rooms are less refined but have standard modern furnishings and features, including 24-inch flat-screen TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi. Also updated, with a refrigerator, wet bar, and microwave, the loft units are a good choice for families. During the holidays the lodge is decorated with twinkly flair.

This collection of historic farmhouses features rooms and suites dating from the 1850s to the early 1900s, renovated to reflect the ambience of their era while still providing modern-day comforts—perhaps the best one being the outdoor pool with a hot tub and swim-up bar. The Guild Hotel, San Diego, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

$$$ | 500 W. Broadway, San Diego, CA, 92101, USA

After an $80 million renovation completed in 2019, the historic Italian Renaissance-style building—a former YMCA building used exclusively by military servicemen—updated all 162 rooms and suites, keeping plenty of nods to its military history like vintage photographs behind the lobby bar and original tile work. Once an underground pool now an event space, the subterranean floor also contains 10 especially quiet guest rooms and an old-fashioned barber shop. • Chic outdoor deck reserved for guests
  • Freestyle Italian cuisine (try the olive oil cake) at adjacent Giusto restaurant
