Hampton Inn Majestic Chicago Theatre District

$ | 22 W. Monroe, Chicago, IL, 60603, USA

The Hampton Inn Majestic is in one of the most high-traffic areas of town; it offers stunning, quiet guest rooms done up in designer tones. Hampton Inn on the Lake

$$ | 704 1st St., Marble Falls, TX, 78654, USA

Marble Falls may not have as many independent accommodations as the bustling tourist town of Fredericksburg, but the Hampton Inn on the Lake does its best to make your experience as unique to the Hill Country as possible. The staff is exceptionally friendly, and the facility has a spectacular view over the lake. Rooms feature plush, comfortable beds and are available with two queen beds or one king plus a fold-out couch.

Hampton Inn Petaluma

$ | 450 Jefferson St., Petaluma, CA, 94952, USA

The former Carlson-Currier Silk Mill, its oldest section dating to 1892, houses this atypical Hampton Inn, some of whose guest rooms have 14-foot ceilings and exposed-brick walls. Historical maps and vintage and recent Petaluma photographs decorate the rooms, done in rich gray tones that complement the red brick. Some standard queen rooms feel small, but the suites are spacious. Business travelers enjoy access to photocopying and a few other amenities. A plentiful buffet is laid out each morning in the mill's former dye room, a contender for the chain's classiest breakfast venue.

Pros

  • Original architectural details in some rooms
  • Classy breakfast area
  • Fitness and business centers

Cons

  • Traffic noise (ask for a historic room away from the road)
  • Some standard rooms are small
  • No pool, nondescript neighborhood

Hanalei Bay Resort

$$$$ | 5380 Honoiki Rd., Princeville, HI, 96722, USA

The nicest feature of this three-story condominium resort overlooking Hanalei Bay is its upper-level pool with authentic lava-rock waterfalls, an open-air hot tub, and a kid-friendly sand beach. The buildings angle down the cliffs, making for some steep walking paths. Units are spacious, with high sloping ceilings and large private lanai. Rattan furniture and island art add a casual feeling to rooms. Some units are managed by the resort and others by private owners. All units have kitchens, including the smaller studios. Hanalei Colony Resort

$$$$ | 5--7130 Kuhio Hwy., Haena, HI, 96714, USA

The only true beachfront resort on Kauai's North Shore, Hanalei Colony is a laid-back, go-barefoot kind of resort sandwiched between towering mountains and the sea. There's an emphasis on simplicity here, but Wi-Fi is available in every unit. Some units are 10 feet from the sand, and though it's a beautiful coastline, the ocean is normally too rough for swimming. Many of the units are individually owned and generally well maintained, with Hawaiian-style furnishings, full kitchens, and lanai. Amenities, such as cocktail receptions and cultural activities, vary from season to season. There's a new two-story garden pool complex, plus an art gallery, small day spa, and restaurant on-site.  The road leading to this resort can occasionally be closed due to flooding or road repair, causing delays and possibly blocking access to the airport, so plan accordingly.

Pros

  • Kitchens in units
  • Private quiet property
  • Well-maintained units with Hawaiian-style furnishings

Cons

  • Weak cell phone reception
  • Damp in winter
  • No TVs, room phones, or air-conditioning (rooms have ceiling fans)

Hanalei Inn

$$ | 5--5468 Kuhio Hwy., Hanalei, HI, 96714, USA

If you're looking for lodgings that won't break the bank and put you just a block from gorgeous Hanalei Bay, look no further, as this is literally the only choice among the town's pricey vacation rentals. Besides a private bath and queen-size bed, every room has HDTV and Wi-Fi, as well as a kitchen or kitchenette. Outside, you share a picnic table, hammocks, soda machine, and barbecue with other guests.

Pros

  • Quick walk to beach, bus stop, and shops
  • Full kitchen
  • Coin-operated laundry on-site

Cons

  • Strict cancellation policy
  • Daytime traffic noise

Hanford House Inn

$ | 61 Hanford St., Sutter Creek, CA, 95685, USA

The updated country decor of this historic district inn suggests a boutique hotel, but touches like the warm scones delivered to guest rooms each morning recall a traditional bed-and-breakfast. The crisp white walls in the main redbrick lodge's lobby give way on the second floor to the softer olive greens and grays predominating in the accommodations. A few are furnished with queen beds, but most have kings. Some rooms have fireplaces, private balconies, small refrigerators, and heated bathroom floors—or, in the case of the penthouse, all of these plus a microwave. Four nearby spacious cottages, all decorated in a similar style and all with decks, seem built for romance.

Pros

  • Walk to shops, restaurants, and tasting rooms
  • Spacious romantic cottages with decks
  • Some rooms have fireplaces, balconies, or both

Cons

  • Cottages and penthouse pricey for the area
  • Sells out on summer weekends
  • Minimum-stay requirement some weekends

Hangar Hotel

$$ | 155 Airport Rd., Fredericksburg, TX, 78624, USA

Literally located along the landing strip of Fredericksburg's local airport, the Hangar Hotel is an homage to the town's famed National Museum of the Pacific War, designed and outfitted with just about every relic and detail you can imagine in a World War II–era hotel. Don't worry—you won't be bothered by the roar of 747s taking flight; the planes here are small, private prop planes and barely noticeable inside the hotel. Rooms each have king beds and are simple yet comfortable, with 1940s-style decor. The adjacent diner is your typical old-school soda fountain establishment, and the stylish on-site Officer's Club bar is a popular evening gathering spot for guests and locals alike (ages 18 and over). Discount rates are offered to seniors and military service professionals.

Pros

  • Good on-site bar
  • Unique theme and design
  • Quiet rooms despite proximity to airport

Hannagan Meadow Lodge

$ | 23150 U.S. 191, Hannagan Meadow, AZ, 85920, USA

Located about 50 miles south of Springerville along the picturesque Coronado Trail, Hannagan Meadow is considered remote—even by Eastern Arizona standards. One of the last places to stop along the trail, Hannagan Meadow Lodge is a great place to spend a night. Choose to stay in the historic lodge or more rustic log cabins, some of which have full kitchens and fireplaces, while others are equipped with microwaves, stove tops, and wood-burning stoves. Three meals a day are served at the on-site restaurant—a good thing considering there's not much for a half hour in either direction.

Pros

  • Gorgeous surroundings
  • Fantastic service
  • Absolute solitude

Cons

  • Don't rely on daily room cleaning
  • More lodge than hotel
  • 30--60 minute drive to next restaurant, gas, and hotel
