Harbour Cottage Inn

$$ | 9 Dirigo Rd., Southwest Harbor, ME, 04679, USA

Originally an annex to Mount Desert Island's first summer hotel, the elegant 1870 main inn has nine tasteful guest rooms named after different kinds of boats; there’s also a wing with two modern accommodations, including a three-bedroom suite with a kitchen, and a one-bedroom cottage. Serving drinks and "shareable bites" to guests and the public, the inn's cozy Bowsprit Bar (open 4–8:30 pm) makes great use of the large porch and deck overlooking the sweeping front lawn.

  • Bottled wine and canned beer and soda sold to guests via the honor system
  • All lodging quarters have robes
  • Fireplace and plenty of seating in the well-appointed parlor

Cons

  • One guest room's bath is on the private lower level (as is the entrance)

Harbour House

$$ | 450 Old San Carlos Blvd., Fort Myers Beach, FL, 33931, USA

This condo hotel offers a degree of beach luxury with brightly painted and sea-motif studios and one- and two-bedroom condos, all privately owned and all with a balcony or lanai. Given its amenities, it's a real deal, mostly because there's a bit of a walk to the beach. Only three stories high, it does have some bay views but none of the Gulf. The owners also have a restaurant within easy walking distance.

Pros

  • Close to lots of restaurants
  • Roomy units
  • Free covered parking

HarbourView Inn

$$$$ | 2 Vendue Range, Charleston, SC, 29401, USA

If you ask for a room with a view or even a private balcony here, you can gaze out over Charleston Harbor and onto the fountain at the center of Waterfront Park. All of the rooms were updated in 2021, shedding some traditional decor for updated armoires, drapes, and new carpet, plus refreshed local art. Some rooms are in a former 19th-century shipping warehouse with exposed brick walls, plantation shutters, and whirlpool tubs. Afternoon wine and cheese and evening milk and cookies are included. Parking is valet-only for $40 a day. A new hotel, The Cooper, is scheduled to open across the street in 2025, so ask about the state of construction noise and current views of the waterfront before booking.

Pros

  • Continental breakfast can be delivered to your room or the rooftop
  • Attractive rooftop terrace with soaring views
  • Lovely Lowcountry design

Cons

  • Chain hotel feel in some parts
  • Not as new and exciting as similarly priced options
  • No pool

Hard Rock Hotel Daytona Beach

$$ | 918 N. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach, FL, 32118, USA

Worth a visit for the rock-n-roll memorabilia alone, the Hard Rock Daytona Beach marries the traditional music-themed brand with the city's passions—auto racing, motorcycles, and the beach. There's a wall dedicated to the city's musical royalty, the Allman Brothers Band; unique items worn by the likes of Rihanna and Taylor Swift; and the mermaid costumers used by Bette Midler and her backup singers during her Las Vegas stint. And that's all in the lobby, where live music plays most nights. Music-themed rooms are modern, and many have balconies facing the beach, pool, or overlooking a concert stage. You choose the genre of in-room music that plays throughout your stay, and you can reserve, free of charge, a Fender guitar complete with a floor amp and headphones. For a special treat, book the signature Rhythm & Motion massage in the spa, one of the best in the city.

Pros

  • On the beach
  • Cool music memorabilia and live music daily

Built in 1937, this fully renovated roadside motel has been given a distinct artsy, boutique upgrade by a foursome of new owners, three of whom are working artists, which translates into a sculpture garden out front, regular workshops by a resident artist, and performances on the red stage on the vast, hammock-dappled back lawn. Rooms are constrained to historical dimensions, but feel fresh, modern, and modestly stylish.

Hargrave House

$$ | 50 S. Main St., Doylestown, PA, 18901, USA

The spirited British innkeeper, Lorna Woodson, watches over Hargrave House like someone who helped re-create it, because she did. A true bed-and-breakfast in the center of town, the inn is named for stonemason Thomas Hargrave, who owned the home in the mid-19th century, but the original section, in which you'll find the cozy Hargrave House Suite, dates to around 1814. The other guest rooms, which are larger, are in a new annex; most have fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. Feather beds and 600-thread-count linens show the innkeeper's attention to detail, as do her cooked-to-order full breakfasts, prepared at a time of each guest's choosing (and accommodating dietary constraints). Don't be surprised if she offers you a glass of sherry in winter to go with some afternoon nibbles.

Pros

  • Attentive and flexible innkeeper
  • Free on-site parking
  • Central location

  • Only one room in historic part of house

Harmony Motel

$ | 71161 Twentynine Palms Hwy., Twentynine Palms, CA, 92277, USA

In the late 1980s, while working on and taking photos for the now legendary album, The Joshua Tree, the rock band U2 found itself holed up at this circa-1952 roadside motel atop a hill overlooking town and beneath the national park’s jagged peaks. If you want luxury, look elsewhere; though some rooms offer kitchenettes, all have a hodgepodge of furnishings and basic bathrooms and amenities. But if you seek a storied stay, this fits the bill. You can even recreate one of the photos that made the final liner notes: the hotel sign that serendipitously features musical notes is still standing.

Pros

  • Cactus gardens and nature trail
  • Outdoor pool and hot tub
  • A mile from 49 Palms Oasis trail

Cons

  • Small property that books quickly

The Harper Inn

$ | 3038 Orchard La., Placerville, CA, 95667, USA

Snappy design, full kitchens, and proximity to downtown, wineries, and Apple Hill make this small early-1940s motel renovated in 2022 into vacation rentals a delight for its price point. The aesthetically pleasing suitelike accommodations have separate bedrooms (king or queen beds), walk-in rain showers, 60-inch smart TVs, and responsive Wi-Fi. The husband-and-wife hosts pride themselves on the TLC they've put into the house and the hospitality they show their guests. Some noise bleed-through between rooms and the less than scintillating location in a residential cul-de-sac between stand-alone commercial establishments and a strip mall count as drawbacks, but the pluses for the most part outweigh them in this Gold Country town with few worthy nonchain options.

Pros

  • Responsive Wi-Fi
  • Aesthetically pleasing suitelike accommodations
  • Husband-and-wife hosts

Cons

  • Lacks the amenities of full-service establishments
  • Less than scintillating location
  • Airbnb rental
  • Need to call owner's cell to book a particular room

Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort

$$$$ | 777 Casino Dr., Cherokee, NC, 28719, USA

The Harrah's complex now includes two hotels, doubling down on its status as North Carolina's largest lodging. The Cherokee opened in 2021, adding 725 more rooms to the 21-story towers of the existing resort. The comfortable rooms and suites on the higher floors overlook the mountains, and escalators get you to the casino and the extensive restaurant selection that includes a Wicked Weed Brewpub, a Ruth's Chris Steak House, BRIO Italian Grille, Guy Fieri's Cherokee Kitchen, and a food court by Gordon Ramsay that stays open late. The casino is larger than three football fields and has live blackjack, roulette, craps, and poker games along with some 5,000 electronic gaming machines. Harrah's Las Vegas Hotel & Casino

$ | 3475 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA

Old-school Vegas is alive and well at this affordable Center Strip property. The hotel, which opened in 1973, has undergone periodic renovations to keep up with the times, though it is no longer a destination property. Mountain Deluxe Tower Rooms are done in cool neutrals, Valley rooms have rain showers, and Cabana rooms have direct access to the pool. The casino floor, however, still has a lot of mirrors—a much less cool throwback to the 1970s. The sportsbook has mobile ordering, with food delivered to your seat. The pool, though small in comparison with others on the Strip, is relaxing and fun. The most rollicking time is had at Carnaval Court, where bartenders mix drinks with acrobatics and flair and there are live DJs.

Pros

  • Throwback vibe with some modern touches
  • Affordable, reliable rooms
  • Ideal location

Cons

Harrah's Tahoe Hotel/Casino

$ | 15 U.S. 50, Stateline, NV, 89449, USA

The 18-story hotel's major selling point is that every room has two full bathrooms, a boon if you're traveling with family. Upper-floor guest rooms have lake or mountain views. Standard rooms, spacious at about 475 square feet but in need, comment some guests, of a decor update, have coffeemakers, but you'll pay a small fee for a refrigerator. Higher-priced rooms, which benefit from softer hues, come with refrigerators. Among the restaurants, the top-floor Friday's Station Steak & Seafood Grill, with good views from every table, is a standout; there's also a bar on the 18th floor. A tunnel runs under U.S. 50 to Harveys, which, like Harrah's, is now part of the Caesars empire. Cheaper rates are available midweek.

Worth the extra cost are the accommodations in the property's rear, with outdoor hot tubs nearly within reach of vines farmed by nearby Whitehall Lane Winery. Havasupai Lodge

$$$$ | 159 Supai, Supai, AZ, 86435, USA

Operated by the Havasupai Tribe at the bottom of Havasu Canyon, these are fairly spartan accommodations—each room has two double beds and a bathroom—but you won't mind much when you see the natural beauty surrounding you. There is no kitchen, but a café serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The tribal entry and environmental fees are included in the room rate. Reservations are essential and can be made up to a year in advance beginning June 1.

Pros

  • Sleep in a bed rather than a tent
  • Native American perspective on the natural and cultural history of the Grand Canyon
  • Private bathroom

Cons

  • More than a 2-mile hike to the falls
  • Plain and worn rooms
