This small, attractively updated, and economical motel is an easy drive from the Mt. Washington Auto Road, skiing at Attitash Mountain Resort, and the inviting villages of Jackson and North Conway. The former Best Western Golden Arrow is under new management, and sits right in the heart of Lake Placid, on Main Street. Beautiful views of Mirror Lake are available from the lobby and some rooms, which have balconies. But what really sets the property apart is the owners' decision to go as green as possible. Expect recycled and ecofriendly gifts to greet you on arrival (perhaps a pine-tree seed in a terra-cotta pot filled with earth, for example). Have a seat at Charlie's, the resort restaurant, for a view of the green roof. The roof, finished in summer 2008, is an insulating blanket of plants grown on a flat section of the property's roof. Some of the herbs grown there might go into dishes served at Charlie's. Kids' programs are available.

Waterville Valley's premier condominium resort, its steep roof punctuated by dozens of gabled dormers, recalls the grand hotels of an earlier era. Rooms are outfitted with upscale light-wood furniture and have full kitchens; many units have views of the surrounding peaks.

The Golden Nugget has long reigned as Downtown's top property, since the mid-1970s, evolving with the times but maintaining classic appeal. The resort stands apart from its \"Old Vegas\" neighbors with unique attractions, namely The Tank, a pool with a shark tank and a three-story waterslide (which, incidentally, goes through the shark tank). You can gamble out near the pool, too. The nicest and newest accommodations on the property reside in the modern and sophisticated Rush Tower; beds are plush, and built-in desks easily convert to multimedia stations. Casino operators have been known to cycle through new table games, but the popular poker room, which has starred on a number of poker television shows, is likely to last. Although the casino here is smaller than some of its Laughlin neighbors, this resort has a more upscale feel and a convenient layout that's easy to navigate. It is home to three chain restaurants, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Claim Jumper, and the popular Saltgrass steak house. The Rush Lounge nightclub is a perennially popular hot spot. The atrium echoes the Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip with two cascading waterfalls surrounded by tropical plants from around the world.

Its primo picturesque setting on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River is duly complemented with lavish furnishings in each room or cottage, including two-person whirlpool tubs, heated towel bars and gas fireplaces. For the ultimate views, book the Mississippi Room where you can sip an evening cocktail in the screened-in porch while gazing out onto a magnificent vista of the setting sun over the river.

Built in 1911 for the first president of the University of Montana and fully remodeled in 2021, this prairie-style brick home offers six apartment-style units, each with a kitchen or kitchenette (and all but one with laundry facilities). The building sits on the bank of the Clark Fork River, at the end of a footbridge that leads to campus. With big white eaves and an ample porch overlooking the river—where blue heron, osprey, and bald eagles congregate—this historic building offers the opportunity to put down shallow roots if you need a place for a longer stay. The Clark Fork suite has a king-size bed, private entry, and riverside porch. The two-room Bitterroot Apartment offers two rooms (one queen, one twin), two full baths and two patios. Most suites have full kitchens and laundry, and all have river views.

Blink and you'll miss this Miracle Hill adults-only gem, the sole Black-owned hotel in the Greater Palm Springs area, which—with a tiny spa, a sizable yard, a springs-fed pool and hot tubs, a chaise-lined terrace, and a firepit—feels like a cross between an updated Joshua Tree hotel, a wellness camp, and your childhood friend's parent's ranch house. Despite being peaceful, there's no escaping other guests or day-pass holders in the common areas so make sure to book one of the five suites with a back patio to give your best-behaved public persona a reprieve. Built of cedar timbers and decorated in a Western style, this lodge-style bed-and-breakfast is warm and inviting. A hearty breakfast is served at individual tables in the dining room, and hors d'oeuvres are served with wine by the fireplace in the late afternoon. All rooms have private baths, and most have balconies with mountain views. The lovely garden has a deck, gas firepit, and hot tub. As the lodge is very close to Whitefish Mountain Resort, it has a ski room with boot and glove dryers, and the snow bus to the ski area stops right outside. The newest addition to Eugene's expanding 5th Street Public Market, The Gordon offers a boutique-meets-business experience, with lots of local touches. The contemporary rooms are large and bright and all feature work desks with good lighting and plenty of nods to the hotel's surroundings, from wall art inspired by the surrounding neighborhood to coffee and tea sourced from Oregon producers. Some rooms are pet-friendly and a few categories also have balconies. While there's no room service, you can grab a bite from the lobby Tavern or head up to Carlita's on the rooftop for cocktails and city views. 

The 10 off-the-wall accommodations at this "glampground" range from a renovated double-decker English bus to a super hero–themed tiny house. Each space has a different theme, and several are large enough to accommodate families. The grounds are beautiful and include a small pond and creek. 

This turreted Queen Anne Victorian was completely remodeled and updated in early 2023, and although rooms still have things like vintage armoires and headboards, they now also have a swanky, contemporary vibe and modern amenities. The two most private rooms, which have fireplaces, balconies, and whirlpool tubs, are in the rear carriage house. Homemade cookies, sodas, and evening wine and hors d'oeuvres are complimentary. A buffet breakfast is served in the parlor or garden.

A sleek, modern boutique hotel, the Gotham has a lot going for it, from good-size rooms to nice amenities, but a clincher is that every room has outdoor space. There are no more than four rooms per floor, allowing families and larger parties to take over entire floors if desired. Upper floors have only two rooms per floor, both with terrific east- and westward views. Rooms are large—around 300 square feet—and include king-size beds, and gorgeous tiled bathrooms with rain showerheads and Molton Brown bath amenities. The location's past was a family-owned bookstore, so you'll come across some vintage books and its aptly named steak-house restaurant, The Reading Room. Parking is with an affiliated garage across the street. 

With spectacular views of Monument Valley from each room's private balcony, this historic lodge often serves as a base for film crews in the area—and has for years, as cinema greats John Wayne and John Ford used to stay here. It has handsome stucco buildings and simple rooms decorated with Native American art. The best lodging deals here are the houses and suites, which offer full kitchens and much more space than the hotel rooms for not much more money. For a true sense of Goulding's beginnings and history, spend some time at the on-site museum. Also on the grounds, the Stagecoach restaurant serves the area favorite, a Navajo taco, along with many traditional American entrées. Goulding's offers custom-guided tours of Monument Valley and provides Navajo guides into the backcountry, where you're not allowed to venture on your own. The lodge is 2 miles off U.S. 163, at the Monument Valley Tribal Park turnoff, about 25 miles southwest of Mexican Hat.

During the week, this newly renovated hotel—housed in a former livery stable and featuring contemporary-meets-the-past decor—buzzes with politicians, press, lobbyists, and other business travelers; on weekends, it's booked with visitors who want to explore downtown and/or have a romantic getaway. Fresh, colorful design and Bohemian flair set the tone at this hotel (a college-themed boutique brand that is now under the Hilton flag) in one of Berkeley's registered historic places, just steps from campus and downtown eating, shopping, and entertainment. Rooms are vintage scholarly-inspired, quirky, and welcoming, with modern tech amenities and a fitness center to keep with the times. In the lobby, friendly and accommodating staff add to the collegiate atmosphere. Henry's Restaurant dishes up delicious farm-to-table pub fare each evening.

There are many hotels with bland, corporate decor—and then there's the Graduate Palo Alto, where every square inch of space seems to have some form of elaborate design or decoration. With a base of very intricate Spanish Colonial architecture, the university town–focused brand completely remodeled what was the Hotel President (named for Stanford alum Herbert Hoover), a popular 20th-century hotel that had fallen into disrepair. Each room has a retro vibe (old-fashioned bedspreads and eye-catching floral and bird wallpaper) and a huge amount of Stanford influence. The shower entry frame is arched like the classic campus architecture, and bed headboards are stenciled with redwood trees, a nod to the Stanford tree mascot.

Tucked away in the corner of the University of Connecticut's main campus, this rehabbed property is an homage to UCONN, its famous alumni, and the culture and legacy that surrounds the institution with themed decor that ranges from a giant husky at the front door to repurposed basketball court flooring in the lobby and art in the rooms---is that Bobby Moynihan on the lampshade? The onsite, aptly named Trophy Room, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and there's a fitness room; and pets are allowed (for a fee).
