Flathead Lake Lodge

$$$$ | 150 Flathead Lodge Rd., Bigfork, MT, 59911, USA

Since 1945, the lodge (previously "Averill's Flathead Lake Lodge") has been providing families a wholesome and active Western getaway. The beautiful green grounds are on the shore of the lake, where beach fires, canoeing, and sailing take place. The lodge, accommodations, and other buildings are all log-and-stone structures. Horseback rides set out both in the morning and evening, and you can learn to rope in the rodeo arena. Many activities such as rafting and guided fishing trips are available for an extra cost. It's BYOB at the bar. From October through May, the lodge is open for corporate retreats only.

Pros

  • Watching large herds of horses being turned out to pasture at end of day is breathtaking
  • Well-kept facility with excellent food
  • Tons of activities, including waterskiing, fly-fishing lessons, and shooting sporting clays

Cons

  • Sign on the east side of Highway 35 can easily be missed

Florida House Inn

$$ | 22 S. 3rd St., Fernandina Beach, FL, 32034, USA

This charming, fully restored, late-19th-century inn—once used by guests of the Vanderbilt, DuPont, and Carnegie families, who built "cottages" nearby on Cumberland and Jekyll islands—has a rambling, two-story, clapboard main building full of character and rooms with handmade quilts, hooked rugs, king-size beds, and whirlpool tubs. The on-site restaurant, Leddy's Porch, serves biscuits and gravy, along with fried chicken and other Southern favorites, for lunch and weekend brunch. Foley House Inn

$$$ | 14 W. Hull St., Savannah, GA, 31401, USA

In the center of the Historic District, this elegant inn is made up of two town houses built 50 years apart. Expect stunning architecture and beautifully appointed accommodations: all have fireplaces and reproduction antique furnishings, some have whirlpool tubs and balconies. Ask for a room overlooking Chippewa Square, where Forrest Gump sat on a park bench giving a dissertation about a box of chocolates. There's also a carriage house to the rear of the property with less expensive rooms. Afternoons are marked by a charming high tea service.

Forsyth Park Inn

$ | 102 W. Hall St., Savannah, GA, 31401, USA

Done up in a sunny shade of yellow, this wood-frame Queen Anne home dating from 1893 is surrounded by an appealing courtyard and gardens. Indoors, the parlor has parquet floors and is furnished with some proper Queen Anne pieces, but much is simply old. The parlor fireplace is a focal point, and it is fun to open the tall windows and step onto the veranda; many guests take their breakfast here among the rockers and ferns. All rooms are exceptionally large, but the best are No. 7 (with its black floral fabrics and fireplace), No. 5, and No. 9. Children and pets are allowed only in the cottage out back, which is not as well furnished as the main house.

Pros

  • Excellent Southern breakfast
  • Complimentary homemade desserts
  • On-street parking is free

Cons

  • Some rooms are just adequate

Fort Worden State Park Conference Center

$$$$ | 200 Battery Way, 98368, USA

The 330-acre Fort Worden, built as a late-19th-century gun emplacement to guard the mouth of Puget Sound, gained a new purpose when enterprising souls turned the spacious Victorian homes on Officers Row into some of the more memorable lodgings on the Olympic Peninsula. The charming houses are furnished with antique reproductions, and some have been recently renovated with new furniture. Besides the Officers Row choices, there are houses from the former NCO Row and assorted other duplexes, cottages, and loft apartments. Homes range from the one-bedroom Alexander's Cottage (built in 1883) to the recently remodeled 14-bedroom Reunion House that accommodates 29 and has a double kitchen. The old fort is a magical place for children, with an artillery museum, a marine science center, and a graceful old lighthouse. Dining options include a restaurant, pub, and beach snack shack that are open varied hours and days depending on the season.

Pros

  • Myriad activities
  • Acres of waterfront for play

Four Queens Hotel & Casino

$ | 202 Fremont St., Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA

Named after former owner Ben Goffstein's four daughters, the circa-1966 Four Queens is what Vegas regulars would consider an \"oldie but goodie,\" one of the most familiar casinos on Fremont Street. It also happens to be incredibly popular among Hawaiian visitors (largely because of the whole \"queen\" theme). Standard rooms were last remodeled back in 2008, so they're getting a bit stale. Still, for the price, the place is a reliable option. The main attraction at the \"Queens\" is Hugo's Cellar, an old-school steak house with a stellar wine list and carts on which servers make salads and flambé bananas Foster. The casino is pretty neat, too, featuring one of the world's largest slot machines, $3 blackjack, and dealers who look like they've been there forever. Here's a quirk: Four Queens guests have to use Binion's pool, which is down the block.

Pros

  • No resort fees
  • Kitsch factor
  • Hugo's Cellar steak house

Cons

  • Rooms need a remodel
  • Pool off-site
  • Outdated gaming floor

$$$$ | 222 Sansome St., San Francisco, CA, 94104, USA

Each luxurious room at the city's second Four Seasons has spectacular city and bay views; the hotel occupies the top 11 floors in two wings connected by a glass skybridge atop one of San Francisco's tallest and most recognizable buildings. There are touches of San Francisco history throughout the chic, wonderfully appointed guest rooms—headboard reading lights inspired by the city's streetcars; gold wall coverings in the terrace suites—and guests can rely on all the usual Four Seasons pampering with a spiffy fitness center, spacious rooms at all levels, cotton bathrobes and slippers, massive flat-screen TVs, and deep soaking tubs in most of the bathrooms.

Pros

  • On-site Orafo restaurant is worth a visit
  • Friendly and helpful service
  • Luxurious design without feeling too glitzy

Cons

  • In a business area that's quiet nights and weekends
  • Easy to hear hallway noise
  • Skybridges will terrify guests who are afraid of heights

$$$$ | 999 N. 2nd St., St. Louis, MO, 63102, USA
Along the banks of the Mississippi, this resort-style property offers a bird’s-eye view of the iconic Gateway Arch—a vista that's particularly enjoyable from a private poolside cabana on the hotel's Sky Terrace or from a table at its rooftop, South American–inspired Cinder House restaurant. The expansive full-service spa features caviar facials, exotic body wraps and massages, and guests have full access to its relaxation lounges, steam rooms, saunas, and whirlpools. Though there's lots of pampering and exclusivity, rooms are also appropriately equipped for business travelers.

Pros

  • Acclaimed chef at on-site restaurant
  • Riverfront location with incredible Arch views
  • Full-service luxury spa

Cons

  • Aside from the adjacent casino, nearby nightlife caters to an under-30 crowd
  • Expensive
