Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village

$$$$ | 2 Dole Dr., Westlake Village, CA, 91362, USA

This sophisticated resort with its wide range of amenities—indoor and outdoor pools, multiple delicious restaurants, art gallery, and a sprawling spa and salon—and whole-life wellness programming is technically one L.A. County valley over from The Valley. But as its where quiet luxury-loving denizens in the know go for self-care staycations through the Center For Health & Wellbeing (or to carb-load on the extremely talented pastry chef's breads and desserts in both the all-day café and California brasserie Coin & Candor), it counts. With ample meeting and event spaces, it's also popular with the conference and team-building crowd, which often takes advantage of included fitness classes, meditation sessions, the teaching kitchen, and hiking excursions in the bucolic Santa Monica Mountains seen out the windows of most well-appointed rooms. (Lower levels stare more directly at the lush landscaping and towering rock waterfall.) Although most of the hotel is aimed at pleasing adults such as live jazz at the speakeasy or in-room G&T stations, children will get a kick out of the game room with ping pong and free arcade games, kids' club, and The Cove, a sun-worshipper's dream sanctuary complete with mammoth pool, several hot tubs, hammocks, a bocce court, daybed- and lounge-covered terraces, and a restaurant serving house-made paletas, Wagyu cheeseburgers, and lobster tacos. Sure, it's far from the Hollywood and downtown sites but you'll be enjoying indulging too much to want to leave.

Pros

  • Giant gym includes yoga and spin studios
  • Even bigger spa and wellness program
  • Multiple restaurants

Cons

  • Overlooks the freeway on one side
  • Far from L.A.'s biggest attractions
  • Too few free weekend fitness classes

Four Seasons Hotel, Los Angeles at Beverly Hills

$$$$ | 300 S. Doheny Dr., Los Angeles, CA, 90048, USA

High hedges and patio gardens make this hotel a secluded retreat that even the hum of traffic can't permeate—one reason it's a favorite of Hollywood's elite, whom you might spot at the pool and espresso bar. For a relaxing meal or a healthy smoothie, you can dine poolside on the tropically landscaped terrace. Massages here are among the best, and the nail salon lures the rich and famous. For high-end modern Italian, dine at Culina, the sleek indoor/outdoor eatery.

Francis Marion Hotel

$$$$ | 387 King St., Charleston, SC, 29403, USA

Wrought-iron railings, crown moldings, and decorative plasterwork speak of the elegance of 1924, when the Francis Marion was the largest hotel in the Carolinas. Still the tallest downtown hotel, it's a National Historic Trust property. In the handsome guest rooms—many of which overlook Marion Square—bountiful throw pillows and billowy curtains add flair. The Frederick Hotel

$ | 95 W. Broadway, New York, NY, 10007, USA

Located at a busy TriBeCa intersection close to subways, the boutique Frederick Hotel is an ideal launching pad for exploring downtown neighborhoods. The building dates from 1828 (and famously hosted Abraham Lincoln), and while a 2018 overhaul transformed the former Cosmopolitan Hotel into today's modern accommodations, you can still enjoy historic photos hanging in its common spaces. The hotel rises seven stories, and its guest rooms are undoubtedly compact, but balanced with modern touches and New York–inspired design details like artistic maps on subway tiles in the bathrooms. There's also a small fitness center. Primo's bar adds an art deco flair, while neighborhood-fave Serafina serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and room service.

Pros

  • Modern design with NYC touches in historic building
  • Good value for prime downtown location
  • Solid on-site dining and bar

Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort

$$$$ | 1 Tarpon Blvd., Fripp Island, SC, 29920, USA

On the island made famous in Pat Conroy's Prince of Tides, with 3½ miles of broad, white beach and unspoiled scenery, this private resort has long been known as a safe haven where kids are allowed to roam free, go crabbing at low tide, bike the trails, and swim. There are more than 150 individual villas and homes here instead of a hotel, though there is a variety of small efficiencies. It's a good getaway for sporty types who like to kayak and canoe, play golf or tennis, and go fishing out of the marina. The Gables

$$ | 4520 Chester Ave., Philadelphia, PA, 19143, USA

Built in 1889 by architect Willis Hale, this ornate mansion is a wonderful place for a B&B—the ground-floor parlor and entryway feature natural cherry and chestnut wood, and the guest rooms have oak floors with elaborate inlays of mahogany, ash, and cherry. In the dining room, guests are served a hot breakfast; the menu changes daily, and there are always muffins, cereal, coffee, and tea (complimentary wine and cookies, too). An idyllic wraparound porch is perfect for reading a Victorian novel. One room has a glass-enclosed sitting porch, and four have working fireplaces. The owners—who live in the building—are avid collectors of Victoriana, so if that's your thing, this is definitely your place. The property has free, on-premises parking.

Gaige House

$$$ | 13540 Arnold Dr., Glen Ellen, CA, 95442, USA

There's no other place in Sonoma or Napa quite like the Gaige House, which blends the best elements of a traditional country inn, a boutique hotel, and a secluded hideaway. Black and white predominate in the individually decorated guest rooms, with muted grays and lightish-brown hues softening the effect. The main house, an 1890 Queen Anne, contains more than half the rooms, whose features vary. Two newer structures hold Zen Suites, all of which have private gardens and deep granite soaking tubs. Some Zen suites face Calabazas Creek (these are the most desirable); others have interior courtyard views. Magnolia, oak, and other trees shade the backyard and its swimming pool and hot tub area.

Pros

  • Swimming pool and hot tub area
  • Freshly baked cookies and afternoon wine hour

Cons

Gallagher's Irish Rose B&B

$$$ | 302 S. Broadway, Red Lodge, MT, 59068, USA

A large stone fireplace serves as the focal point of the living room, and gas or electric stoves or fireplaces lend a cozy feel to each guest room, as do quilts and artwork, both by the owners. Baked apple-pecan French toast with homemade syrup is a popular breakfast choice.

Pros

  • Food products organically grown
  • Easy walk to shops, galleries, and restaurants
  • The rooms look better in person

Cons

  • Stairs pose a problem for some
  • No parking, but street parking plentiful nearby
  • Located on the main street so traffic (from bikers) can be loud
