Glen Sanders Mansion

$$ | 1 Glen Ave., off Rte. 5/Mohawk Ave., Scotia, NY, 12302, USA

A former fur trapper's trading post–turned–Dutch mansion provides a swish backdrop for a room and a meal on the Mohawk River. Standard rooms have two queen beds; junior suites have a king-size sleigh bed, a desk, and a seating area. The decor throughout is a harmonious blend of patterned fabrics and wallpapers in elegant palettes. Candlelit tables set with fine china and table linens fill the pre-colonial dining room, which has two decorative fireplaces and hand-hewn beams. A cavelike, stone-walled pub downstairs offers lighter fare.

Glidden House

$$ | 1901 Ford Dr., Cleveland, OH, 44106, USA

For those who are skeptical of the rustic facilities and folksy banter common at many B&Bs—but who still want distinctive lodging and a personal feel—Glidden house offers a compromise. On the Case Western campus, the French Gothic mansion, built in 1910, has a traditional hotel staff and dining in its carriage house restaurant, Sergio's, which focuses on seafood and Brazilian fare. Rooms feature plasma-screen TVs and private baths. The modern room decor in particular is a welcome change from the often fussy look of some historic B&Bs. Suites are decorated more traditionally, and some have wet bars.

Glorietta Bay Inn

$ | 1630 Glorietta Blvd., San Diego, CA, 92118, USA

The main building on this property is an Edwardian-style mansion built in 1908 for sugar baron John D. Spreckels, who once owned much of Downtown San Diego. Rooms in the mansion and in the newer motel-style buildings are quaintly furnished; some have patios or balconies. The inn is adjacent to the Coronado harbor and near many restaurants and shops, but it's much smaller and quieter than the Hotel Del, across the street. Complimentary breakfast is served each morning; coffee, tea, and fruit are available throughout the day; and seasonal afternoon refreshments make for a nice pick-me-up (hot chocolate during the winter and lemonade on hotter days).

Pros

  • Great views
  • Friendly staff
  • Close to beach

Cons

  • Mansion rooms are small
  • Lots of traffic nearby

Glunz Ocean Beach Hotel and Resort

$$ | 351 E. Ocean Dr., FL, 33051, USA

The Glunz family got it right when they purchased this former time-share property and put a whole lot of love into ensuring it achieved its full oceanfront potential—from the bottom-floor rooms, you can walk out your back door and your feet are in the sand, or you can also chill at the oceanfront tiki bar or one of two heated pools. Standard rooms have a small fridge and coffeemaker; kitchens (in suites only) are well equipped, too. To stay like royalty, opt for the three-level oceanfront villas, each with 2,300 square feet and a garage. Hungry? Walk next door to Havana Jack's for fish tacos, or have the staff drive you via golf cart to the local bars so you won't drink and drive.

Pros

Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort

$$ | 2559 Main St., Lake Placid, NY, 12946, USA

The former Best Western Golden Arrow is under new management, and sits right in the heart of Lake Placid, on Main Street. Beautiful views of Mirror Lake are available from the lobby and some rooms, which have balconies. But what really sets the property apart is the owners' decision to go as green as possible. Expect recycled and ecofriendly gifts to greet you on arrival (perhaps a pine-tree seed in a terra-cotta pot filled with earth, for example). Have a seat at Charlie's, the resort restaurant, for a view of the green roof. The roof, finished in summer 2008, is an insulating blanket of plants grown on a flat section of the property's roof. Some of the herbs grown there might go into dishes served at Charlie's. Kids' programs are available.

Pros

  • Large, clean and spacious rooms
  • Easy access to Mirror Lake

Cons

  • It's nice to have a fireplace in your room, but the smell from others' fires lingers

Golden Nugget Las Vegas Hotel & Casino

$ | 129 E. Fremont St., Las Vegas, NV, 89101, USA

The Golden Nugget has long reigned as Downtown's top property, since the mid-1970s, evolving with the times but maintaining classic appeal. The resort stands apart from its \"Old Vegas\" neighbors with unique attractions, namely The Tank, a pool with a shark tank and a three-story waterslide (which, incidentally, goes through the shark tank). You can gamble out near the pool, too. The nicest and newest accommodations on the property reside in the modern and sophisticated Rush Tower; beds are plush, and built-in desks easily convert to multimedia stations. Parlor Suites, refreshed to look old again, also are a good value. Casino operators have been known to cycle through new table games, but the popular poker room, which has starred on a number of poker television shows, is likely to last. Another perk: you can bring your dog.

Pros

  • Legendary Vegas property
  • One-of-a-kind pool
  • Great poker room

Cons

  • Small sports book
  • Table games change frequently
  • Too many room options
