The Gotham Hotel NY

$$ | 16 E. 46th St., New York, NY, 10017, USA

A sleek, modern boutique hotel, the Gotham has a lot going for it, from good-size rooms to nice amenities, but a clincher is that every room has outdoor space. There are no more than four rooms per floor, allowing families and larger parties to take over entire floors if desired. Upper floors have only two rooms per floor, both with terrific east- and westward views. Rooms are large—around 300 square feet—and include king-size beds, and gorgeous tiled bathrooms with rain showerheads and Molton Brown bath amenities. The location's past was a family-owned bookstore, so you'll come across some vintage books and its aptly named steak-house restaurant, The Reading Room. Parking is with an affiliated garage across the street.

Pros

  • Every room has a balcony
  • Central location in Midtown
  • Multilingual staff

Cons

  • No on-site gym
  • Some guests smoke on the balconies
  • Fee for early check-in

Goulding's Lodge

$$ | Off U.S. 163, Monument Valley, UT, 84536, USA

With spectacular views of Monument Valley from each room's private balcony, this historic lodge often serves as a base for film crews in the area—and has for years, as cinema greats John Wayne and John Ford used to stay here. It has handsome stucco buildings and simple rooms decorated with Native American art. The best lodging deals here are the houses and suites, which offer full kitchens and much more space than the hotel rooms for not much more money. For a true sense of Goulding's beginnings and history, spend some time at the on-site museum. Also on the grounds, the Stagecoach restaurant serves the area favorite, a Navajo taco, along with many traditional American entrées. Goulding's offers custom-guided tours of Monument Valley and provides Navajo guides into the backcountry, where you're not allowed to venture on your own. The lodge is 2 miles off U.S. 163, at the Monument Valley Tribal Park turnoff, about 25 miles southwest of Mexican Hat.

Pros

  • Stunning views
  • One of the only lodgings in the park
  • Dark skies and quiet nights

Cons

  • It's miles from anything in any direction
  • Prices fluctuate wildly
  • You pay a high price for the unique setting

Graduate by Hilton Palo Alto

$$ | 488 University Ave., Palo Alto, CA, 94301, USA

There are many hotels with bland, corporate decor—and then there's the Graduate Palo Alto, where every square inch of space seems to have some form of elaborate design or decoration. With a base of very intricate Spanish Colonial architecture, the university town–focused brand completely remodeled what was the Hotel President (named for Stanford alum Herbert Hoover), a popular 20th-century hotel that had fallen into disrepair. Each room has a retro vibe (old-fashioned bedspreads and eye-catching floral and bird wallpaper) and a huge amount of Stanford influence. The shower entry frame is arched like the classic campus architecture, and bed headboards are stenciled with redwood trees, a nod to the Stanford tree mascot.

Pros

  • Outstanding rooftop bar
  • Great blend of past and modern architecture
  • Excellent Lou & Herbert's café

Cons

  • Some guests will find it cluttered and over-designed
  • Some rooms feel small
  • Has almost no amenities

Graduate by Hilton Storrs

$$ | 855 Bolton Rd., Storrs, CT, 06268, USA

Tucked away in the corner of the University of Connecticut's main campus, this rehabbed property is an homage to UCONN, its famous alumni, and the culture and legacy that surrounds the institution with themed decor that ranges from a giant husky at the front door to repurposed basketball court flooring in the lobby and art in the rooms---is that Bobby Moynihan on the lampshade? The onsite, aptly named Trophy Room, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and there's a fitness room; and pets are allowed (for a fee).

Pros

  • Conveniently located on the UCONN campus
  • Easy walk into town
  • Pet-friendly rooms

Graduate Chapel Hill

$$$$ | 311 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC, 27516, USA

In the center of this hotel, three floors of rooms overlook a carpeted basketball court, where guests can shoot hoops with soft basketballs handed out at the front desk. It's one very notable touch among many that compel both heavy and casual UNC fans to stay at this boutique hotel in the thick of Franklin Street. Guests can people-watch from room balconies or mingle with the after-work crowd at the Trophy Room, the cushy ground-floor bar and patio, where the honey used in cocktails is sourced from beehives on the roof. Service is spot-on, from the friendly hosts behind the counter to the well-versed bartender. The setting and the contemporary touches combine to make guests feel both part of the college scene and far removed from their everyday lives.  Ask to see Room 23, a replica of Michael Jordan's UNC dorm room.

Pros

  • Great location, with on-site parking ($27)
  • Friendly staff make stays memorable
  • Small touches everywhere to delight UNC fans

Cons

  • Franklin Street can get noisy when the campus is buzzing with students

A bright and whimsical world awaits you inside this Midtown hotel—have your camera ready because you're going to want to take a picture everywhere you look. The property is bursting at the seams with one-of-a-kind personality and spunk: there’s a grand piece of art in Minnie Pearl’s likeness that greets guests behind the front desk, and there’s no shortage of odes to Nashville’s musical nature or neighboring Vanderbilt University. On-site dining at White Limozeen draws its fair share of locals and visitors for its notable pink rooftop and Dolly Parton–inspired flare. Grand Hyatt Nashville

$$ | 1000 Broadway, Nashville, TN, 37203, USA

Towering over the railroad line that bisects Downtown, this conveniently located hoteleasy walking access to both Downtown and Midtown without being in the middle of the Lower Broad crazinessembraces the historic nature of the city's past as a rail center with impressive symbolic artwork in the massive lobby. An impressive variety of room types are available, all equipped with large flat-screen televisions, premium bathroom amenities, and mini-refrigerators, and there's a rooftop pool with gorgeous panoramic city views. The attached Chef Sean Brock–helmed restaurant, The Continental, is definitely an added bonus for the Grand Hyatt and its guests.

Pros

  • James Beard–winning chef's restaurant on-site
  • Convenient access to all three interstates crossing in Downtown
  • Short walk to Lower Broad without all the craziness associated with the main tourist district

Cons

  • Lots of construction in the area can get noisy during the day
  • Railroad tracks complicate walking access to The Gulch
  • Feels a little isolated over the hill from the main strip of Broadway
