Green Valley Ranch Resort, Spa & Casino

$ | 2300 Paseo Verde Pkwy., Henderson, NV, 89052, USA

Locals have long known that Green Valley is a low-key, refined resort that prefers style over bustle (the Strip is a 15-minute drive away). The sprawling pool area includes The Pond, which offers poolside bottle service, day and night. Upstairs, in the hotel towers, modern and spacious rooms have cherrywood furniture, plush chairs, and beds with down comforters. The Griswold Inn

$$ | 36 Main St., Essex, CT, 06426, USA

Two-plus centuries of catering to changing tastes at one of America's oldest continuously operating inns has resulted in a kaleidoscope of decor—some Colonial, a bit of Federal, a little Victorian—with just as many modern touches as necessary to meet present-day expectations. Although many of the rooms in "the Gris," as it's affectionately known, feel a bit worn, the point here is more to soak up history than to feel pampered. Chefs at the restaurant prepare country-style American fare, and there's a Tap Room—built in 1738 as a schoolhouse—that's fun for after-dinner drinks.

Pros

  • In the heart of historic downtown Essex
  • Rich history—since opening in 1776
  • Fun pub with live music every night

Cons

  • Rooms above/near the Tap Room are noisy until 11 pm
  • No room TVs—head for the common room if you must

Gwin's Lodge

$$ | 14865 Sterling Hwy., Cooper Landing, AK, 99572, USA

One of Alaska's oldest roadhouses, Gwin's is the epicenter of much activity on the peninsula and a one-stop shop providing food, lodging, and fishing tackle. The lodge becomes an anglers' headquarters during the annual salmon runs on the nearby Russian and Kenai rivers. Accommodations vary from dry fisherman's cabins to chalets with lofts, vaulted ceilings, and full kitchens. The restaurant serves fresh fish when available, sandwiches, steaks, and hearty breakfasts. Book directly with the lodge and they'll give you a $20 credit toward the restaurant.

  • Everything you need in one place
  • Pretty decent food
  • Very quaint and historic

Cons
