Five Gables Inn

$$ | 107 Murray Hill Rd., East Boothbay, ME, 04544, USA

This beautifully restored Victorian inn, set amid delightful gardens on a side road in East Boothbay, is one of the last of the many turn-of-the-20th-century hotels that once welcomed guests to the area. Rooms all have period furnishings, including some four-poster beds; some also have fireplaces, and all but one has views of the islands in Linekin Bay. Bring your kayaks and access the water directly from the property. The broad porch overlooking the bay has plenty of comfy chairs from which to enjoy the view along with your breakfast, which features such specialties as bacon and blue cheese quiche and orange-ricotta pancakes. It's hard to tear yourself away from this serene spot to go exploring. When you do, be sure to return in time for afternoon tea and baked treats.

Pros

  • Delicious breakfasts and afternoon tea
  • Views of Linekin Bay
  • Lovely secluded spot

Cons

  • Waterfront is across the road
  • Rooms under the gables have slanted ceilings and low headroom

Flamingo Las Vegas

$ | 3555 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA

This elaborately landscaped, pink, classic-era resort with a 15-acre pool complex (undergoing a major renovation at this writing) is still one of the best choices in town. GO rooms, with electronic window treatments and other high-tech touches, are downright stylish, and Fab Rooms feature vintage Las Vegas artwork. One-bedroom Cosmopolitan Suites are decorated in chocolate browns and hot pinks. Be sure to check out the on-site wildlife area, complete with a koi pond and, naturally, a flamboyance of Chilean flamingos. Two other big attractions: the 7,000-square-foot Pinky's by Vanderpump, and The LINQ Promenadea retail, dining, and entertainment complex that's next door.

  • Heart-of-the-Strip location

Flamingo Resort

$$ | 2777 4th St., Santa Rosa, CA, 95405, USA

If Don Draper from Mad Men popped into this 1950s motel-hotel hybrid 2¼ miles northeast of downtown Santa Rosa, he'd feel right at home. Guest rooms, all with refrigerators and coffeemakers, retain their high ceilings and that old-school flair. They're spread out in several fieldstone-clad buildings connected by glass-enclosed walkways encircling the Olympic-size outdoor pool. The suites and premium rooms, some with poolside patios, are spacious, and all the rooms have retro decor touches. From certain angles, the Flamingo exudes mid-century style, but although it has a large central pool, a spa, and a fitness center, the place feels more motor lodge than resort. One plus is the poolside Lazeaway Club restaurant and bar, with tropical-themed drinks and a party atmosphere. Sunday poolside brunch is a treat.

Pros

  • Movie star Jayne Mansfield partied here in the 1960s
  • Retro decor
  • Poolside Flamingo Lazeaway Club for Sunday brunch

Cons

  • 30-minute walk to downtown
  • Service lapses
  • Feels more motor lodge than resort

Flathead Lake Lodge

$$$$ | 150 Flathead Lodge Rd., Bigfork, MT, 59911, USA

Since 1945, the lodge (previously "Averill's Flathead Lake Lodge") has been providing families a wholesome and active Western getaway. The beautiful green grounds are on the shore of the lake, where beach fires, canoeing, and sailing take place. The lodge, accommodations, and other buildings are all log-and-stone structures. Horseback rides set out both in the morning and evening, and you can learn to rope in the rodeo arena. Many activities such as rafting and guided fishing trips are available for an extra cost. It's BYOB at the bar. From October through May, the lodge is open for corporate retreats only.

Foley House Inn

$$$ | 14 W. Hull St., Savannah, GA, 31401, USA

In the center of the Historic District, this elegant inn is made up of two town houses built 50 years apart. Forsyth Park Inn

$ | 102 W. Hall St., Savannah, GA, 31401, USA

Done up in a sunny shade of yellow, this wood-frame Queen Anne home dating from 1893 is surrounded by an appealing courtyard and gardens. Indoors, the parlor has parquet floors and is furnished with some proper Queen Anne pieces, but much is simply old. The parlor fireplace is a focal point, and it is fun to open the tall windows and step onto the veranda; many guests take their breakfast here among the rockers and ferns. All rooms are exceptionally large, but the best are No. 7 (with its black floral fabrics and fireplace), No. 5, and No. 9. Children and pets are allowed only in the cottage out back, which is not as well furnished as the main house.

Fort Worden State Park Conference Center

$$$$ | 200 Battery Way, 98368, USA

The 330-acre Fort Worden, built as a late-19th-century gun emplacement to guard the mouth of Puget Sound, gained a new purpose when enterprising souls turned the spacious Victorian homes on Officers Row into some of the more memorable lodgings on the Olympic Peninsula. Besides the Officers Row choices, there are houses from the former NCO Row and assorted other duplexes, cottages, and loft apartments. Homes range from the one-bedroom Alexander's Cottage (built in 1883) to the recently remodeled 14-bedroom Reunion House that accommodates 29 and has a double kitchen. Named after former owner Ben Goffstein's four daughters, the circa-1966 Four Queens is what Vegas regulars would consider an \"oldie but goodie,\" one of the most familiar casinos on Fremont Street. It also happens to be incredibly popular among Hawaiian visitors (largely because of the whole \"queen\" theme). Standard rooms were last remodeled back in 2008, so they're getting a bit stale. Still, for the price, the place is a reliable option. The main attraction at the \"Queens\" is Hugo's Cellar, an old-school steak house with a stellar wine list and carts on which servers make salads and flambé bananas Foster. The casino is pretty neat, too, featuring one of the world's largest slot machines, $3 blackjack, and dealers who look like they've been there forever. Here's a quirk: Four Queens guests have to use Binion's pool, which is down the block.
