Goulding's Lodge

$$$$ | 1000 Gouldings Trading Post Rd., Monument Valley, UT, 84536, USA Fodor's Choice

Nestled beneath a massive red rock monolith, this two-level property affords spectacular views of Monument Valley from each room's private balcony. Before the View Hotel opened nearby with even more impressive views, this was the only lodging in the region offering truly knockout scenery. It has more history than its competitor, but it's not as plush, although rooms do have DVD players, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs; there are also several family suites, each with two bedrooms and full kitchens. The on-site Stagecoach restaurant serves American, Southwestern, and Navajo fare amid Western movie memorabilia. Goulding's also conducts custom guided tours and provides Navajo guides into the backcountry.

Pros

  • Incredible views
  • Very peaceful
  • Indoor pool open all year

Cons

  • Remote location
  • Not cheap
  • Books up weeks in advance in summer

$$$$ | 555 S. Main St., UT, 84101, USA Fodor's Choice

Built to impress dignitaries and celebs attending the 2002 Winter Olympics, this 24-story luxury tower is Salt Lake City's most opulent hotel, a huge complex with similarly huge rooms (averaging 700 square feet), most of them with balconies and sweeping views. Grand Bohemian Hotel–Charlotte

$$$$ | 201 W. Trade St., Charlotte, NC, 28202, USA Fodor's Choice

Charlotte's take on this art-focused chain hotel is sleek and modern, like the Queen City, but with a subtle Argentinean undercurrent that's apparent in the paintings and sculptures, and in the food at Mico, the on-site restaurant. White marble and black accents set an upscale, neutral tone, while large-format portraits and gold-plated ceilings provide contrasting color. The rooftop bar, Buho, is a weekend hot spot for locals.

Pros

  • On-site Poseidon Spa is one of the city's best
  • Lobby includes a Starbucks
  • Feels like staying in a trendy art museum

Cons

  • The sixth-floor patio is great, but may not be available due to weddings
  • Much of the art contains nudity, making it iffy for some families with small kids

Granger Hotel

$$$$ | 964 Fifth Ave., San Diego, CA, 92101, USA Fodor's Choice

San Diego's first (and only) guest-only hotel means safety, security, and privacy, all wrapped up in a $30-million renovation of a historic 1904 building. No design detail has been overlooked in this comfortable, cosmopolitan addition to lively Gaslamp. Thoughtful touches like zebra-print rugs and peacock-shaped lamps in guest rooms act as an homage to the building's history as temporary housing for numerous animals on their way to the nearby San Diego Zoo. A 24/7 security guard keeps the public out, allowing guests to feel at home in one of the 96 rooms, all of which have soundproof windows to block out street noise. A hot breakfast is included with the rate, but Granger encourages guests to get out and experience San Diego's extensive options of nearby restaurants, returning to relax and perhaps enjoy a nightcap in The Parlor Room adjacent to the lobby lounge. A partnership with the parking garage off 5th Avenue and Broadway allows for overnight parking with in-and-out privileges for $40 a night—a bargain in pricey downtown.

  • Incredible design in every nook and cranny
  • Convenient location to all of downtown

Cons

Hawaii Island Retreat at Ahu Pohaku Hoomaluhia

$$$$ | 250 Maluhia Rd., Kapaau, HI, 96719, USA Fodor's Choice

Here, above the sea cliffs in North Kohala, sustainability meets luxury without sacrificing comfort: the resort generates its own solar and wind-turbine power, harnesses its own water, and grows much of its own food. Beautiful floors are made from sustainably harvested woods, and rooms take advantage of natural light and ventilation to keep energy usage low. Surrounded by 50 acres, 20 of which are a dedicated conservation area, the retreat feels both luxe and completely hidden from the world. Handsome rooms have high ceilings, elegant doors, crown molding, and private balconies. Three cliff-side hales (houses) with kitchenettes offer ocean views. Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront

$$$$ | 3001 Atlantic Ave., Virginia Beach, VA, 23451, USA Fodor's Choice

This Hilton is the only four-star hotel in Virginia Beach; towering 21 stories over the oceanfront, it has shops, three restaurants, a rooftop bar, and infinity pool. The seafood restaurant, Catch 31, receives consistently good reviews, and there is great outdoor seating overlooking the boardwalk. At night the bar is a happening scene for thirtysomethings. Rooms use muted tan textiles to give the space a warm feeling. Flat-screen TVs are in both bedrooms and the bathrooms. Most rooms have balconies with panoramic views, but if yours lacks a beachfront view, you can always hang out at the rooftop pool with rails of glass looking down to the boardwalk. Recently upgraded, the three floors of the Empyrean Club level have really taken it up a notch: the bathrooms even have built-in TVs in the mirrors. Book early, as the Hilton sells out quickly, even in the off-season.

Pros

  • A luxury hotel with all the amenities
  • Infinity pool on the roof is unique
  • Rocking chairs outside and fire pits at the restaurant are nice places to hang out

Cons

  • The priciest choice in Virginia Beach

Hotel Jackson

$$$$ | 120 N. Glenwood St., Jackson, WY, 83001, USA Fodor's Choice
This swank, LEED-certified hotel built of iron, repurposed barn wood, and natural stone on the site of a Victorian hotel of the same name feels at once ruggedly Western and pleasingly cosmopolitan, its guest rooms and common spaces filled with artful, comforting touches. The spacious accommodations have gas fireplaces, plush linens, big closets designed to store hiking and ski gear, and airy bathrooms, some with big soaking tubs and walk-in showers. Top-floor rooms have balconies, too. The restaurant, Figs, serves first-rate Middle Eastern fare, and the rooftop hot tub is a fine place to soak your muscles after a day of outdoor adventures.

Pros

  • Opulent rooms and design
  • Steps from Jackson Square
  • Superb service

Cons

  • Steep rates
  • Not a great choice for families
  • In a busy part of town

Hotel Paso Del Norte

$$$$ | 10 Henry Trost Ct., El Paso, TX, 79901, USA Fodor's Choice
Following a five-year closure and a tremendously ambitious renovation and rebranding, this 1912 grande dame with an enormous Tiffany-designed, stained-glass dome suspended above the bar reopened in 2020 as part of Marriott's posh Autograph Collection. The airy, artfully decorated rooms contain Southwestern and Mexican fabrics and furnishings. Creative Latin American–inspired fare is served in Sabor restaurant, and there's also a swanky steakhouse and a hip rooftop bar. It's steps from downtown museums, the handsome minor league baseball park, and the border bridge to Ciudad Juárez.

Pros

  • Stunning historic design elements
  • Excellent restaurants and a hip bar
  • Luxurious spa

Cons

  • Parking isn't free
  • Pricey for El Paso
  • In a busy part of downtown

Hotel Saint Cecilia

$$$$ | 112 Academy Dr., Austin, TX, 78704, USA Fodor's Choice

Saint Cecilia goes beyond anything you'd expect in an eclectic, decidedly Austin accommodation, from the art deco–style bar to the neon lights that read "S-O-U-L" shining above the heated outdoor pool. No two rooms are alike on the swanky, highly exclusive South Congress estate, from contemporary poolside bungalows to suites in the historic Victorian main building, though each reflects an extravagant, vintage-inspired style in a rock-and-roll meets turn-of-the-20th-century France motif. All have luxurious Hästens beds, refinished antiques, and unconventional artwork ranging from Keith Richards portraits to vintage Cuban movie posters. An on-site café has an all-day menu.

Pros

  • Intensely private, yet very central SoCo location
  • Luxuriously spacious rooms
  • Exclusive vibe with grounds closed to the general public and frequent celeb guests

Cons

  • Prohibitively priced
  • Fees charged for pets
  • Full property bookings and special events during festivals can limit availability
