The Manner

$$$$ | 58 Thompson St., New York, NY, 10012, USA Fodor's Choice

Flicking on its lights for the first time in autumn 2024, this buzzy boutique property from the Standard hotel folks dials it back a few decades, channeling the 1970s with comfy larger-than-average rooms bathed in oranges and yellows and soft-glowing lights illuminating hardcover books and design accoutrements that harken back to a time when Richard Nixon was still in the White House. The only thing that's missing are ashtrays. The Otter, the in-house restaurant from talented chef Alex Stupak, serves up seafood-forward comfort fare, while the rooftop bar is great for cocktail sipping and gawking at the skyline views. Montage Healdsburg

$$$$ | 100 Montage Way, Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA Fodor's Choice

Its bungalow-like guest rooms deftly layered into oak- and Cabernet-studded hills a few miles north of Healdsburg Plaza, this architectural sensation sets the standard for Sonoma County's ultraluxury game. Starting at 599 square feet—with studios and suites running from 948 to 1,178 square feet and the Guest House checking in at 4,600—the spaces are bathed in soothing whites and earth tones. Original works by local artists grace the walls, with floor-to-ceiling windows revealing heritage oaks, grapevines, and Mt. St. Helena beyond. All guest quarters have outdoor living spaces with a firepit, a daybed, lounge chairs, and a dining table. The public areas captivate all the more, especially the pool and the lead restaurant, Hazel Hill, whose semiprivate dining room juts into the oaks like a treehouse. Dining options include a private chef's kitchen, French-style market and deli, and pizzeria, all overseen by a chef who is dedicated to local and sustainable food. All rooms are oceanfront, with private balconies or patios. If the sound of waves crashing on the beach doesn't lull you to sleep, the luxurious beds and bedding should do the trick. With ancient oaks, marshes, and lagoons, the resort is also a worthy destination for nature walks, cycling, fishing, and guided kayak tours. Extensive kids' programs give grown-ups a bit of time to themselves. Villas, which can be rented through the Omni, are privately owned, so availability, amenities, and decor vary.

Pros

  • All rooms oceanfront with private outdoor space
  • Extensive kids' programs
  • Largest poolscape in northern Florida

Cons

  • Some facilities require a golf cart or shuttle ride
  • $40 a day resort fee for Wi-Fi, parking, golf access, and more
  • Remote from town

Omni Grove Park Inn

$$$$ | 290 Macon Ave., Asheville, NC, 28804, USA Fodor's Choice

This massive resort has hosted 10 U.S. presidents, from Woodrow Wilson to Barack Obama, and with grand views of downtown and the Blue Ridge Mountains, a challenging golf course, and a variety of dining options, it's easy to see why. Its restaurants include Edison (Southern comfort food) and Vue 1913 (contemporary American and French). The inn's spa is built into the sloping mountainside, with glass ceilings filling the serene chambers with natural light. Rooms are furnished with oak antiques in the Arts and Crafts style, and the lobby fireplaces are as big as the restored Model T car that sits next to one of them.

The Osprey at Beaver Creek, a RockResort

$$$$ | 10 Elk Track La., Beaver Creek, CO, 81620, USA Fodor's Choice

You can't get any closer to a ski run in the United States than the Osprey, unless you sleep on the lift. This sleek, chic slope-side hotel is steps from the Strawberry Park Express high-speed quad lift. The rooms in this truly boutique property (there are a mere 45 of them including a two-bedroom penthouse suite) are refreshingly spacious and airy, illuminated with a cozy gas fireplace. Couples can enjoy tapas at the bar next to the "living room" lounge.

Pros

  • Best ski location at Beaver Creek
  • Rooms are fresh and light
  • Romantic atmosphere

Cons

  • Often sold out well in advance
  • Can get loud when crowded
  • Despite proximity to the slopes, not every room has a nice view

Otesaga Resort Hotel

$$$$ | 60 Lake St., Cooperstown, NY, 13326, USA Fodor's Choice

There's something almost collegiate about the stately Otesaga—maybe it's all the brick, or perhaps it's the cupola or the neoclassical entryway. The same studied grace runs throughout the interior. But it would be hard to hit the books here, thanks to such distractions as the Leatherstocking Golf Course and fishing or canoeing on Otsego Lake. In the luxurious dining room, massive windows look out onto the grounds. The four-course dinner is quite formal, with jackets required for men. The ever-changing menu lists contemporary dishes such as boneless chicken glazed in honey and lavender and sautéed sea bass.

Pros

  • Pretty building
  • Afternoon tea

Cons

  • Two-night minimum stay
  • Too stuffy for some

This charming beachfront hotel is full of aloha—locals say it's one of the few resorts on the island where you can get a true Hawaiian experience as the entire staff takes part in the hotel's Pookela program, which teaches guests about the history, traditions, and values of Hawaiian culture.
