Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia

$$$$ | 10 S. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA, 19107, USA Fodor's Choice

You'll feel like you're checking into the Pantheon when you enter this neoclassical hotel set in a century-old bank building—more than 60,000 square feet of Georgian white marble makes up the dramatic lobby; a 2015 renovation modernized both the lobby (textures reminiscent of currency, in a nod to the building's banking past) and guest rooms (work and play spaces, set in a contemporary neutral palette with metallic touches). Ionic columns ascending the height of nine stories dwarf the main lounge, and natural light cascades through the oculus of the 140-foot dome ceiling. A drink in the lobby is a treat, even if you're not staying here. Guest rooms are surprisingly small and could use some better soundproofing, but have modern touches like flat-screen televisions, glass-enclosed showers, and lighted makeup mirrors. Let them know if it's your birthday or another special occasion, and they should greet you with Champagne. Aqimero, the hotel restaurant, is a Latin grill with exciting food and solid cocktails.

Pros

  • Stunning architecture (the lobby bar is unparalleled)
  • Attentive and friendly service
  • Modern in-room amenities

Cons

  • Wi-Fi available for a fee
  • Elevators can be slow
  • Rooms are smaller than some luxury competitors

The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki

$$$$ | 2259 Kalakaua Ave., Honolulu, HI, 96815, USA Fodor's Choice

There's nothing like the iconic "Pink Palace of the Pacific," which is on 14 acres of prime Waikiki Beach and which has held fast to the luxury and grandeur that first defined it in the 1930s, when it became a favorite of the rich and famous. Originally built for luxury-cruise passengers, it hosted galas in its early years and was later requisitioned by the U.S. Navy as a rest and relaxation center during World War II. Today, the property blends modern comforts with historic elegance. Guests appreciate the architectural detailing of the historic wing—with its canopy beds and earth-tone color schemes—but if you want a lanai for sunset viewing, opt for rooms in the oceanfront tower. As the original guests weren't interested in a water view after weeks on the high seas, the historic wing's garden-view rooms are the largest and can potentially be booked for a lower price. Ask about the fascinating (and free) historical tours offered weekly. The beachfront Mai Tai Bar is a local favorite for cocktails and sunsets, and the walk down the hotel's lovely foyer and onto the lawn is very grand indeed.

Pros

  • Choice of rooms in historic wing or oceanfront tower
  • Mai tais and sunsets are amazing
  • Luxury and sense of history in a prime location

Cons

  • Resort fee is $42 per day
  • High-traffic driveway entrance in center of Waikiki
  • Very small swimming pool

Cook's, is renowned, and the open-air Alvadora Spa packs a lot of pampering into a relatively small space.

Santa Maria Suites

$$$$ | 1401 Simonton St., FL, 33040, USA Fodor's Choice

It's odd to call this a hidden gem when it sits on a prominent corner just one block off Duval, but a concrete facade keeps this luxurious find well secluded from the outside world. Six two-story buildings completely surround the courtyard filled with towering date palms and free-form swimming pools. And the suites offer as much inside as the courtyard does outside. Hello, gorgeous. Modern, spacious, with a touch of tropical verve and an overload of high-end style, the units have a chef's kitchen with a Jenn-Air cooktop, Cuisinart pans, and stainless fridge and freezer drawers (filled with ice-cream bars). Bathrooms are sleek with dual shower heads and vessel sinks. The long list of extras includes in-unit washer and dryer, umbrellas, toiletries, free poolside smoothies, a daily happy hour, and a nightly delivery of muffins. There's beach-chair setup at nearby South Beach, too.

Pros

  • Amenities galore
  • Front desk concierge services
  • Private parking lot

Cons

  • Daily resort fee
  • Poolside units must close curtains for privacy
  • Only two-bedroom units available

The Seabird Ocean Resort & Spa

$$$$ | 101 Mission Ave., Oceanside, CA, USA Fodor's Choice

As the star of Oceanside’s renovation project, this oceanfront property is the epitome of coastal fresh with an inviting air reflective of a luxury beach house. Atypical of Hyatt properties, it's styled exclusively for its location with a surfboard valet, a curated gallery of Oceanside art, and wave-scented aromatherapy throughout the hotel. Beyond the “living room” lobby sits Shoreroom bar with sunset cocktails. The unpretentious staff will gladly arrange surf lessons, spa treatments, s’mores kits, and dinner at Piper—the signature restaurant specializing in SoCal coastal cuisine. Although all rooms are comparable, request one of the ocean view rooms with a balcony. Guests can charge services and amenities from sister property, Mission Pacific Beach Resort back to their room. Both hotels are on-point, though Seabird caters more toward young families with its cheerful atmosphere and Shelter Club pool centering the property. Even if you don’t plan on staying here, book a treatment at Sunny's Spa, considered one of the best in San Diego.

Pros

  • Online dine and wine packages
  • Family- and pet-friendly
  • Relaxed local vibe

Cons

  • Can get busy
  • Somewhat pricey
  • Piper restaurant lacks atmosphere
