$$$ | 20 Rte. 3, Bar Harbor, ME, 04609, USA Fodor's Choice

Less than a mile from Acadia National Park, this family-friendly resort has updated 1940s-era cottages across from Hulls Cove; accommodations have vintage lamps and art that adds cottage-y authenticity to the upscale nautical decor, large baths, flat-screen TVs, sitting and dining areas, and a/c, plus screen doors and windows to stir cross-breezes. Buildings are white outside and inside, and cottages and guest rooms have a large wet bar area with microwave and refrigerator, pull-out couch, and king bed; two-bedroom cottages also have twin beds. Inside the magnificent, flatiron-shape Beaux Arts–style building is one of the city's most spectacular places to stay, a sharp, upscale, ultra-hip boutique hotel; in contrast, outside is one of the roughest intersections for street life in San Francisco. The Seabird Ocean Resort & Spa

$$$$ | 101 Mission Ave., Oceanside, CA, USA Fodor's Choice

As the star of Oceanside’s renovation project, this oceanfront property is the epitome of coastal fresh with an inviting air reflective of a luxury beach house. Atypical of Hyatt properties, it's styled exclusively for its location with a surfboard valet, a curated gallery of Oceanside art, and wave-scented aromatherapy throughout the hotel. Beyond the “living room” lobby sits Shoreroom bar with sunset cocktails. The unpretentious staff will gladly arrange surf lessons, spa treatments, s’mores kits, and dinner at Piper—the signature restaurant specializing in SoCal coastal cuisine. Although all rooms are comparable, request one of the ocean view rooms with a balcony. Guests can charge services and amenities from sister property, Mission Pacific Beach Resort back to their room. Both hotels are on-point, though Seabird caters more toward young families with its cheerful atmosphere and Shelter Club pool centering the property. Even if you don’t plan on staying here, book a treatment at Sunny's Spa, considered one of the best in San Diego.

The Seagate Hotel & Spa

$$$$ | 1000 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach, FL, 33483, USA Fodor's Choice

Those who crave luxury in its full glory (rooms with ultraswank tilework and fixtures, marble vanities, seamless shower doors plus access to a spa, pools, and beach club) will love this LEED-certified hotel with a subtle Zen-coastal motif. Although the hotel dates back to 1911, everything, including its private off-site beach club feels fresh. A saltwater pool, one of the first in the area, was grandfathered in during the remodeling and is a highlight of the beach club. Water-sports rentals are available year-round, and the restaurant is perfect for a leisurely lunch. Back at the hotel, a quiet infinity pool can be found adjacent to the spa, and it's hard not to be smitten with the aquariums peppering the common spaces; four in total, with the centerpiece being the lobby's 2,500-gallon tank, they are home to a wide range of creatures, from beautiful lionfish to slithering moray eels, and the concierges have fact sheets on the inhabitants for you to peruse. Rooms are decorated in relaxing neutrals and have plush bedding and Keurig coffeemakers. Opt for the deluxe category—they are one step above the standard rooms, and all have balconies. There's a complimentary trolley that takes you to the beach club, and the hotel offers car transport within a 5-mile radius from 8 am to 11 pm.

  • Two swimming pools
  • Fabulous beach club
  • Exceptionally knowledgeable concierge team

Devotees appreciate the authentic onsen (Japanese-style baths) atmosphere of this award-winning 20-acre Japanese-inspired spa and boutique resort in the picturesque foothills a few miles northeast of town. The 14 light and airy hillside cottages are settled down a piñon-covered hill below the first-rate spa, which is tremendously popular with day visitors. The sleek, uncluttered accommodations have marble or stone wood-burning fireplaces, fine woodwork, high speed Wi-Fi, low-slung beds or futons, and courtyards or patios; two come with full kitchens, but breakfast is included in the rates. The facility has private and communal indoor and outdoor hot tubs, and overnight guests can use the communal tubs for free. The treatment rooms have a zen-like vibe, and the wonderful massages or specialized wellness treatments heal sore muscles after a day hiking or skiing in the surrounding mountains. The hip izakaya-style restaurant, Izanami, serves exceptional Japanese fare.

  • Sleek, stylish decor
  • Outstanding restaurant
  • A soothing, spiritual vibe

Cons

Terramor Outdoor Resort

$$ | 1453 Rte. 102, Bar Harbor, ME, 04609, USA Fodor's Choice

Kampgrounds of America transformed a traditional Bar Harbor campground into its first glampground; the 64 wood and canvas tents have wood floors, beds, porches, and in most cases roomy indoor baths and armchairs. Anchoring its 45 acres is a striking lodge with a soaring sloped wood ceiling, towering stone fireplaces, decks, chic chairs and couches, and a restaurant kitchen that serves the courtesy breakfast and draws folks later for, say, espresso or beer and flatbread. Tents sleep two or five, and some have bunk beds; premium ones have outdoor and indoor showers. Loaded with hardwoods, Terramor is awash in color come fall.

Pros

  • Spa (yes, in a tent), heated pool with hot tub, and covered sitting area
  • Big, fancy grill sites (fee
  • All you need is provided including food)
  • Activities galore (some have fees) include yoga, stargazing with complimentary telescopes, concerts, guided hikes, beekeeper talk, beekeeper experience, and lobster bakes

Cons

  • No “en tent” baths in four tents remaining from KOA campground (but baths are private and the price is right)
  • Not on the water
  • Road noise at some sites

The Tidewater

$$ | 15 W. Main St., Vinalhaven, ME, 04863, USA Fodor's Choice

This welcoming, third-generation family-owned motel is the only lodging option on the water and near the ferry dock. It was built on a bridge overlooking the harbor, and all rooms have wonderful views. All but three of the rooms have private decks. If you want a real treat, get up early enough to watch the lobster boats leave around 5 am. You'll find great personal service here—Sarah, the owner, is happy to help guests make the most of their visit. The property has kayaks, canoes, and SUPs available for rent, and you can catch a ride to good spots for paddling, picnicking, and swimming. Sarah can also arrange boat rides—around the harbor, out on a lobster boat, or an excursion to see puffins—as well as dinner reservations. Continental breakfast is included; a full lobster dinner is served once a week ($50) on the patio.

Pros

  • Great views
  • Right in the village overlooking the working harbor
  • Short walk from ferry dock

Cons

  • Rooms book up far in advance during high season
  • May be too quiet for some
  • The engines of early-departing lobster boats may disturb sleep

Timberline Lodge

$$ | 27500 E. Timberline Rd., Timberline Lodge, OR, 97028, USA Fodor's Choice

Guest rooms are simple, rustic, and charming (a handful of them lack private baths), but don't expect a cushy experience—the reason for staying here is the location and setting. The approach builds excitement: an unforgettable 6-mile ascent that curves its way up to an elevation of about 6,000 feet on Mt. Hood. Then the Lodge materializes out of the mist, and you momentarily forget about the snowcapped peak high above. No wonder Stanley Kubrick used shots of the exterior for The Shining. Complementing the size and majesty of Mt. Hood, the massive structure was erected using timber and rock from the forest and mountain: in 1936–37 more than 500 people toiled, forging metal for furniture and fixtures, sculpting old telephone poles into beams and banisters, weaving, and sawing. A 22-minute film, shown on the lower level, tells the story. You don't need to be a guest to appreciate Timberline—there are daily tours in summer, and day visitors can wander around on their own. Enjoy the restaurants, snow sports, and hiking paths, or relax by the massive fireplace in the "headhouse."

Pros

  • A thrill to stay on the mountain itself
  • Great proximity to all snow activity
  • Amazing architecture

Cons

  • Rooms are small and the least expensive ones have shared bathrooms
  • Views from rooms are often completely blocked by snow in winter
  • Lots of tourists milling about
