Catalina Hotel & Beach Club

$ | 1720–1756 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, FL, 33139, USA

The Catalina is a fun, budget party spot in the heart of South Beach, attracting plenty of early twentysomethings who value freebies like a nightly drink hour, airport shuttles, fitness classes, two fun pools, and beach chairs over posh digs. It's across the street from the beach, but nobody seems to mind the short walk. Each of the Catalina's three buildings has a distinct feel: the original Catalina (with the smallest, most inexpensive rooms) is an exercise in camp, with red-shag carpets, two-story glass windows, and monumental sheer drapes. The midrange rooms are in the old Maxine Hotel, decorated in rock baroque and featuring a karaoke machine in the lobby. Room 400 here is one of the beach's best values, with a private sundeck overlooking the strip. The most luxurious part of the Catalina is the Dorset Hotel, which now houses the hotel's biggest rooms. Its outdoor restaurant, Maxine's Bistro, overlooks the passersby on this very sexy strip of Collins Avenue, making the Catalina an entertainment complex in its own right.

Pros

  • Cool crowd
  • Free airport shuttle
  • Good people-watching

Cons

  • Service not a high priority
  • Late-night debauchery
  • Worn rooms

Cavallo Point

$$$ | 601 Murray Circle, Sausalito, CA, 94965, USA

With a striking setting almost at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, this refined, upscale destination is truly the closest countryside getaway to San Francisco. The lodge is rich with history, residing on what originally was Fort Baker, an Army base founded in the 1900s that continued to have military members on-site until the end of the 20th century. The rooms in the old Army buildings are decidedly swankier and green-focused than during their military days (most have fireplaces), while the separate contemporary rooms are downright posh with radiant heat floors and massive windows for viewing the bridge or nearby forest.

Pros

  • Activities like guided hikes and yoga classes
  • Excellent restaurant, bar, and spa
  • Can't beat the setting and urban proximity combination

Cons

  • Not as luxurious as some of its peers
  • Not really meant for families
  • Hard to get rideshares

Cedar Glen Lodge

$$ | 6589 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe Vista, CA, 96148, USA

Cedar-shingled cottages and a two-story lodge form a horseshoe around this compact, woodsy property's central pool, picnic, and play areas. The look inside and out is classic alpine rustic, with the guest accommodations' wood floors, trim, and furniture driving the point home. Some cottages have kitchens and fireplaces. There's a heated pool open seasonally, and the hot tub remains fired up year-round. The cottages come with one or two bedrooms; because the lodge sits on a rise at the property's back end, the views south to the lake are among Cedar Glen's best.

Pros

  • Solicitous hosts
  • Appealing classic alpine-rustic look
  • Some cottages have kitchens and fireplaces

Cons

  • Lacks amenities of larger properties
  • Can seem expensive in summer for what you get
  • Must cross Highway 28 for beach access

The Celestine

$$$ | 727 Toulouse St., New Orleans, LA, 70130, USA

No two rooms are the same in this building, which inherited some inevitable quirkiness of a French Quarter townhouse (uneven floors, window units instead of central air) but exudes sophistication and elegance. For being so close to Bourbon Street, the whole property is surprisingly quiet, especially in the courtyard and back building, where Tennessee Williams once wrote much of A Streetcar Named Desire. Designer Sara Costello does justice to the building’s history (this was the home of Creole pharmacist Antoine Peychaud, and is named for his wife), incorporating paintings and photographs found on the property, antique furniture, and modern amenities. Rooms range from an apartment-size penthouse color-soaked in green, with daybeds and a breakfast nook, to a cozy galley room with brick walls. The on-site cocktail bar doesn’t get any better, and coffee and pastries are served in the Tennessee Williams wing.

Pros

  • By far the most stylish hotel in the neighborhood
  • Historic without sacrificing comfort
  • Excellent courtyard and bar

Cons

  • Too close to Bourbon Street for some
  • Lacks some amenities of a bigger hotel
  • No elevator

Chalfonte

$ | 301 Howard St., Cape May, NJ, 08204, USA

This is the real thing, a Victorian summer hotel (1876) on the boardwalk with striped green awnings and crisp white paint. The Chalfonte keeps it simple and friendly. Room are pleasantly spartan with wood floors and white curtains and bedspreads; some share bathrooms. Children are more than welcome—a supervised kid's dining room has its own menu. Parents dine in the Magnolia Room or on the boardwalk-long veranda. Southern-style fried chicken, smothered pork chops, corn pudding, and flaky biscuits are made by sisters Lucille and Dot, as their mother, Chalfonte's former beloved cook, taught them. A renovation in 2010 added air-conditioning, heat, and private baths to many of the rooms.

Pros

  • Large inventory of rooms and price options
  • Family-friendly
  • Downtown location

$$$ | 27 S. Summer St., Martha's Vineyard, MA, 02539, USA

From the moment you walk up to the dark-wood Scottish barrister's desk to check in at this regal 1864 inn, you'll be surrounded by the trappings and customs of a bygone era—beautiful antique furnishings, objets d'art, and paintings fill the property. All guest rooms have hair dryers and robes; those in the carriage house have fireplaces and French doors that open into the brick courtyard, as well as private patios. One room even has a baby grand piano.

Pros

  • Over-the-top lavish
  • Quiet yet convenient location
  • Beautifully landscaped

Cons

  • Can feel overly formal
  • Intimidating if you don't adore museum-quality antiques

Chateau Après

$$ | 1299 Norfolk Ave., UT, 84060, USA

In one of the most expensive ski towns around, this reasonably priced classic skiers' lodge is a throwback to bygone ski days. Just 150 yards from Park City Mountain Resort, the rooms aren't fancy, but they're clean, and the service is friendly. Continental breakfast is included. If privacy isn't a priority, men can rent one of 32 beds in the male dorm rooms for $45 a night, which includes breakfast.

Pros

  • Comfortable rooms
  • Close to the slopes
  • Longtime local owners

Cons

  • Limited parking
  • Basic accommodations
