Chena Hot Springs Resort

$$$ | Chena Hot Springs Rd., Chena Hot Springs, AK, USA

Soaking in the hot springs of this one-of-a-kind, eco-friendly resort has long been a popular experience for tourists and locals, especially in winter, when a soak is often paired with overhead aurora sightings. Chena's waters are served up in hot tubs, an indoor swimming pool, and an outdoor natural-rock lake. In winter you can go dogsledding, skiing, snowmobiling on quite electric machines, and take a 4½-mile round-trip snow-coach tour to a heated hilltop yurt with 360-degree views. Summer activities include dog-cart rides, guided ATV tours, and horseback riding. Don't miss the charmingly unfinished ice museum, complete with an ice bar that serves appletinis from hand-carved ice glasses, ice bedrooms, and ice sculptures by world-class carvers. The Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa

$ | 4165 Mears Ave., Chesapeake Beach, MD, 20732-5116, USA

Opened in 2004, this luxury hotel and spa is a key part of the revitalization of the town's tourism business. The public spaces pay homage to the beachfront community's history. A mural in the lobby depicts the old roller coaster that once thrilled vacationers, and framed photographs line the corridors, tracing the town's changes from its Victorian heyday to the present. The whitewashed oak furniture and sand-color walls give the rooms an elegant yet beachy style. The resort was built right on the water's edge, and its suites and deluxe rooms have balconies that seem to hang over the Bay. There are also three dining options, a boardwalk, and a fishing charter company at the hotel's full-service marina.

Pros

  • A full-service resort with boating, an indoor pool, and spa services
  • A sandy beach

Cons

  • Don't expect a "jumping the waves" experience at the beach—the Chesapeake is placid compared to the beach properties on the Atlantic

Churchyard Inn

$ | 206 St. Boniface St., Uniontown, 99179, USA

Registered as a national and state historic site, this 1905 Flemish-style inn, 15 miles southeast of Pullman in Uniontown, was once a parish house for the adjacent church; some of the homey, traditionally furnished rooms have views of the countryside, and one suite has its own kitchen. Book well in advance during WSU games and events.
