Bryant Park Hotel

$$ | 40 W. 40th St., New York, NY, 10018, USA

A city landmark towering over the New York Public Library and Bryant Park in a Midtown sweet spot, this sleek hotel has rooms featuring padded leather headboards with decorative bolster pillows and marble bathrooms with rainfall shower heads and Molton Brown products. Rooms are bigger than average, though those on the lower floors tend to be a bit dark and don't have great views. Both the Koi restaurant and Célon Cocktail Bar & Lounge are popular with the after-work crowd, though later in the evening both the restaurants and the neighborhood tend to get quiet. Still, during the day, the location can't be beat, with 5th Avenue and Times Square quick walks from the front door.

Pros

  • Historic building on Bryant Park
  • Fashionable crowd and setting
  • Stylish, spacious rooms

Cons

  • Bustling traffic outside
  • Not kid-friendly
  • Limited nightlife in the area

Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino

$$ | 20 Buffalo Thunder Trail, Santa Fe, NM, 87506, USA

Managed by Hilton, this expansive, upscale gaming and golfing resort is 15 miles north of downtown Santa Fe, just off a freeway but with spectacular views of the mountains and Rio Grande Valley—it's a great option to be close to the start of the High Road or if you'd prefer to stay close to but still a bit outside of the City Different. Rooms are spacious and airy, all with large windows and some with full balconies taking in the dramatic vistas. The property offers plenty of leisure amenities, including an extensive slate of treatments in the 16,000-square-foot Wo'P'in Spa, access to a pair of championship layouts (27 holes) at the adjacent Towa Golf Resort, a concert venue, and a good mix of upscale and casual restaurants and bars. There's also an enormous casino, but it's set well away from the lobby and public areas on a separate level, making it easy to ignore if gaming isn't your thing. Hilton also operates a less pricey but quite nice Homewood Suites next door.

Pros

  • Snazzy rooms with plenty of amenities
  • Convenient to downtown Santa Fe and Low and High roads to Taos
  • Panoramic mountain and mesa views

Cons

  • Rates can be a bit steep, especially when there are events on property
  • Lobby is noisy and crowded with gamers on many evenings

The Bungalows

$$$$ | 59700 Twentynine Palms Hwy., Joshua Tree, CA, 92252, USA

Amid serene desert on a far corner of the 152-acre Joshua Tree Retreat Center, this adults-only property has three painstakingly restored mid-century-modern buildings containing suites that offer the architectural panache of Palm Springs (patterned masonry, breeze blocks, angular lines, slanted roofs, giant windows) and mod-cons like keyless entry, Parachute linens, and water filtered by reverse osmosis. Each unit has its own kitchen, patio, books, games, and binoculars, but outdoor communal spaces with bistro light–lit long tables, propane grills, and fire pits give groups places to gather. We recommend starting your day by making French-press coffee to take with you on a walk through the vast grounds, which contain ponds, pools, art installations, a café, a bookstore, energy vortices, and the world's largest assemblage of Frank Lloyd Wright's son's organic architecture. For an extra fee, you can also join official retreat workshops.

Pros

  • Access to hiking trails where you will likely not see anyone else
  • Mellow, high-desert vibe
  • Great place to watch sunrises and sunsets

Cons

  • No TVs
  • No on-site personnel

Cabbage Key Inn

$$ | Cabbage Key, FL, 33945, USA

Atop an ancient Calusa shell mound and accessible only by boat, the friendly, somewhat quirky inn built by novelist and playwright Mary Roberts Rinehart in 1938 welcomes guests seeking peace and isolation. It's surrounded by 100 acres of tropical vegetation, through which a natural trail runs. In addition to the inn rooms, there are cottages scattered throughout the property, some of which have kitchens and can accommodate up to eight guests. Rooms range from bare-bones to more modern and family-friendly. There's a full-service marina and a restaurant whose dining room is papered with thousands of dollar bills. One of the many perks of staying here is proximity to the remote and pristine beach of Cayo Costa, a short boat trip from Cabbage Key. Note, however, that 2022's Hurricane Ian made its initial landfall on Cayo Costa, which was heavily damaged; access to it was limited long after the storm.

Pros

  • Plenty of solitude
  • Old Florida character
  • Nature trail

Cons

  • Two-night minimum stay
  • Accessible only by boat or seaplane

The Cabins at Bear River Lodge

$$$ | Mirror Lake Hwy., mile marker 49, UT, 84036, USA

Log cabins in the forest let you reconnect with nature via a range of on-site activities without giving up creature comforts. Simply appointed with log and wood furniture, the cabins are near the lodge, where you can outfit yourself for a variety of outdoor adventures, including even cutting down a Christmas tree in the winter. The seasonal Bear's Grill serves reasonably priced take-out American fare for breakfast and lunch, plus ice cream and shakes. For dinner, you're on your own, but luckily each room features a full-service kitchen. There's a heated pool for summertime dips, and two hot tubs are open year-round. Autumn rates (October to December) are often deeply discounted. From October to May, the route from Kamas (49 miles) on Route 150 is closed, so access is from Evanston, Wyoming (30 miles).

Pros

The Cabins at Kokee

$ | 3600 Kokee Rd., HI, 96716, USA

If you're an outdoors enthusiast, you can appreciate Kauai's mountain wilderness from the dozen rustic cabins—of varying age and quality—that make up this lodge. Cabins are no-frills but more comfortable than a tent, and the mountain setting and proximity to some of the state's most beautiful trails are grand. Wood-burning stoves ward off the winter chill and dampness (wood is a few dollars extra), as it can get pretty cold at this elevation. Cabins sleep two to six and have full kitchens and bathrooms. Note that there's no Wi-Fi or cell service. The nearby restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, or you can bring up groceries from Waimea.

The Cabins Creekside at Welches

$$ | 25086 E. Welches Rd., Welches, OR, 97067, USA

Affordability, accessibility to recreational activities, and wonderful hosts make these cabins with knotty-pine vaulted ceilings, log furnishings, and full-size kitchens a great lodging choice in the Mt. Hood area. Comfortable, large studio units accommodate from one to four people; a single studio cabin is for those who need only a microwave and mini-refrigerator. Patios on each unit face the seasonal creek, and the cabins have lock-storage units large enough to hold bikes, skis, or snowboards.

Cadet Hotel

$ | 1701 James Ave., FL, 33139, USA

A former home to World War II officer cadets, this gem has been reimagined as an oasis in South Beach, offering the antithesis of the sometimes maddening jet-set scene, with 34 distinctive rooms exuding understated luxury. All rooms implement art deco style and feature beautiful antiques hand chosen by the hotel's proprietor. Vintage touches, like iron lighting fixtures and steamer trunks, add nice accent notes. If you're looking for loud music and wild times, go elsewhere. Cadet is more about enjoying a good read on the patio and discovering elusive serenity in the heart of South Beach. Little touches, like candles in the lobby, fresh flowers all around, high-thread-count sheets, and small pouches filled with fresh lavender or seashells, depending on the season, show care and sophistication. This intimate hideaway is one block away from Lincoln Road, two blocks from the beach, and two blocks from the New World Center. Clark Gable stayed in Room 224 during his time training with the Army Air Corps in the 1940s.
