On 20 wooded acres between the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay, about 1 miles south of downtown Chestertown, this mid-19th-century inn, known for its gracious hospitality, still resembles the plantation house it once was. All of the spacious, well-appointed guest rooms have working fireplaces (but only lit October through April), and five have hot tubs. Brannan Lofts

$$ | 1440 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA

On the second floor of a refurbished 1920s building, these light-filled lofts that debuted in 2024 position guests in the middle of downtown Calistoga’s retail, dining, and wine-tasting action. As with the affiliated Brannan Cottage Inn two blocks away (the properties are run jointly as the Brannan Hotels), upscale comfort is the goal, achieved here via custom contemporary furnishings, up-to-the-moment electronics, flat-screen smart TVs, espresso machines, and bathrooms with rain showers and heated floors and toilets. Four lofts have kitchenettes with induction cooktops. With contactless check-in, keyless rooms, and no front desk, the experience resembles an Airbnb more than a boutique hotel, though the GM and other staffers are nearby at the inn, whose café provides a complimentary breakfast for patrons booking directly through the website or by phone.

Pros

  • Four lofts have kitchenettes with induction cooktops
  • Spacious, upscale accommodations
  • Contactless check-in, keyless rooms (think Airbnb
  • There’s no front desk)

Cons

  • No elevator (and stairs are somewhat steep)
  • Must walk two blocks for breakfast, not included for bookings through third-party sites
  • Early- to mid-evening noise (sometimes live music) from nearby restaurants and bars

The Brick Hotel

$ | 408 Pier View Way, Oceanside, CA, 92054, USA

Just blocks from the beach in a building that dates back to 1888, this historic landmark had its chance to shine after a 5-year restoration project that updated the old hardware store with modern amenities and finishes. Despite the major overhaul, developers maintained the original brick façade and historical integrity of the street-corner powerhouse. Today, the 10-room boutique hotel pays tribute to the past with its original brick walls and luggage racks made from salvaged lumber. The self-check-in system operates Airbnb style, with instructions texted directly to your phone. Bright and airy rooms are flooded with light, with firm mattresses and sound-muting windows that ensure a deep sleep. From the ground floor, guests have access to four dining establishments including the Lobby Tiki Bar, Stone Beer Garden, Frankie’s Cocktail Lounge, and the cleverly designed Succulent Coffee (a must-see).
