White Swan Inn

$$ | 845 Bush St., San Francisco, CA, 94108, USA

A cozy library with a crackling fireplace and comfortable chairs and sofas is the heart of this inviting English-style bed-and-breakfast, a sister property to the French-style Petite Auberge next door. The homey atmosphere (with a few mod touches) extends to the sizable rooms, which have floral carpeting and wallpaper, Edwardian-style furniture, and gas fireplaces topped by book-lined mantels. Guests enjoy wine and cheese in the afternoon and a gourmet breakfast basket. Adding to the charm are the century-old cage-style elevator and caring staff members who seem to know everyone's name.

Pros

  • Cozy antidote to nearby chain hotels
  • Nice lounge and patio area
  • Unique touches like board games and its own city treasure hunt

Cons

  • Thin walls make for noisy rooms
  • Nearby streets can feel gritty at night
  • Some rooms need an update

Whitehall

$$ | 52 High St., Camden, ME, 04843, USA

Although the oldest part of the Whitehall is an 1834 white-clapboard sea captain's home, there's nothing stodgy about this historic hotel as the eclectic, mid-century-modern decor shakes things up with lots of red and other bright pops of color. All baths have been updated with walk-in showers. Lodging includes a breakfast buffet with such choices as cold meats and cheeses, house-made pastries, and a hot egg entrée. A small bar serves beer, wine, and canned cocktails. In a small room to one side of the lobby, photos and other memorabilia pay homage to Pulitzer-winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, whose poem "Renascence" describes the view from atop Mt. Battie, which rises just behind the inn. Millay grew up in Rockland and Camden in the early 1900s and had a summer job at the hotel as a teenager. When she read her poetry one evening, a guest was so impressed she arranged for Millay's college education and set her on her career path. The inn is a half-mile from downtown Camden.

Pros

  • Fully renovated with surprisingly jazzy decor
  • Small-plates breakfast choices
  • Wonderful Edna St. Vincent Millay history

Cons

  • Most rooms are upstairs, with no elevator but help with bags
  • Walls can be a bit thin
  • Half-mile walk to in-town restaurants and shops

Wikiup Hummingbird Hotel

$$ | 1645 Whispering Pines Dr., Julian, CA, 92036, USA

Best known for its herd of llamas and goats, this cedar-and-brick inn is decorated with romantic furnishings and offers themed guest rooms with fireplaces and outdoor hot tubs for stargazing. In 2020 a new owner stepped in and renovated rooms with hardwood floors, antique furnishings, footed tubs, and king-size beds. A nod to nature are manzanita handrails along garden pathways and sustainability efforts to make the hotel completely off-grid. From the "Dreamcatcher" room with Navajo decor, to "Shady Lady" designed burlesque style, take your pick from a variety of styles. For more space, request "Willow," which sleeps up to four people.

Pros

  • Pleasant surroundings with private entrances
  • No resort fees or hidden charges
  • Renovated rooms

Cons

  • A drive from town
  • No meals included
  • Two-night minimum on weekends

Recommended Fodor's Video

The William powered by Sonder

$$ | 24 E. 39th St., New York, NY, 10016, USA

The two connected brownstones that were once home to a social club for Williams College are now a modern, extended-stay hotel with an outpost of the speakeasy-style cocktail bar Raines Law Room. The six-story property has rooms with bold colors and contemporary style, plus free Wi-Fi, Roku devices, and fully equipped kitchens. Service is a focus here, with a 24-hour concierge. The common spaces take their inspiration from the building's roots: the Shakespeare is a polished restaurant serving British classics in a space designed to resemble a gentleman's club, and The Shakespeare Pub is a classic British pub with wood-beam ceilings. The property incorporates a pre-arrival check-in process, and an app for use during your stay, but the front desk staff can assist you. It also has a partnership with Blink Fitness Grand Central, just two blocks away.

Pros

  • Nicely equipped kitchens
  • 24-hour concierge
  • Good on-site eating and drinking options

Cons

  • Could get noisy at times
  • No spa on-site
  • Check-in at 4 pm

Williamsburg Lodge & Conference Center

$$ | 310 S. England St., Colonial Williamsburg, VA, 23187-1776, USA
While not your cheapest option, this relatively budget-friendly option in Colonial Williamsburg has a great location close to the historic district, but the hotel itself lacks the charm of the Colonial Houses, which don't cost that much more. Rooms, however, are appointed with furnishings inspired by the collections of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, and every room has a hair dryer, iron, ironing board, and clock radio. Rooms with fireplaces are available. Guests get admission ticket discounts, and have convenient access to a spa and golf.

Pros

  • Excellent choice for families
  • Some rooms adjoin

Cons

  • Hosts lots of large weddings and conferences
  • A busy hotel where check-in and checkout can be slow

The suites are particularly inviting: each has a separate sitting room, French doors, and a porch overlooking gardens. The Windsor Suites

$$ | 1700 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy., Philadelphia, PA, 19103, USA

This modern, 24-story all-suites hotel close to the Parkway museums and Center City's restaurants, shopping, and nightlife caters to corporate business travelers (some on extended stays) as well as vacationing families, and features both studio and good-size one-bedroom spaces. A tiered lobby has some elements evoking Benjamin Franklin, such as quotes from him on a wall. Guest rooms are characterized by their muted neutral color scheme, plus bells and whistles like a kitchen area equipped with a Keurig coffeemaker; some have balconies. The rooftop Skydeck has a firepit and small infinity pool, and Skyline Club Level suites offer upgraded amenities like a 65-inch smart TV. Downstairs are Con Murphy's, an Irish-themed pub with multiple seating areas and a well-rounded menu, and Asia on the Parkway, serving Asian fusion fare. The pub's breakfast hours aren't great for guests who want to buy an early breakfast. One thing to be aware of: regular (permanent) apartment tenants occupy more than 100 additional apartments in the building.

Pros

  • Small seasonal rooftop infinity pool and terrace
  • Some good city views from rooms
  • Rooftop fitness studio with Peloton bikes

Cons

  • At busy intersection, so you may hear street noise

Wine & Roses Hotel

$$ | 2505 W. Turner Rd., Lodi, CA, 95242, USA

Set on 7 acres amid a tapestry of informal gardens and with most guest rooms decorated in rich earth tones or soothing blues and purples, this hotel has cultivated a sense of refinement typically associated with Napa or Carmel. The palette in the spa rooms, which have nearly the same amenities, is softer and more soothing; some rooms have fireplaces, and all have Wi-Fi access that, along with access to the pool and fitness center. Discounts on tastings at the adjacent Lodi Wine & Visitors Center is included in the daily $20 resort fee, and the on-site Towne House restaurant is deservedly popular. After a dip in the pool or a meal at the restaurant, you can head to the spa for a facial or herbal body scrub.

There are also four sparely furnished rooms in the large lodge building that holds the resort's restaurant. Across U.S. 50, a sprawling year-round campground is geared toward RVers, but with walk-in tent sites, too. The resort, old-school in its ambience and ambitions, has horseback riding, snowmobiling facilities, and a marina with boat, WaveRunner, kayak, and other water-sports rentals, all of which contribute to the summer-camp atmosphere. Pets are allowed for a fee.

Pros

  • Family-friendly old-school ambience
  • Cozy cabins
  • Range of on-site outdoor activities

Cons

  • Lodge rooms are basic
  • Can be noisy in summer
  • Not all cabins have fireplaces

This 1844 inn right on Old Salem's Main Street has a way of transporting guests back several centuries; it's also made a name for itself as a romantic getaway. The rooms and common areas are filled with reproduction antiques of the 18th and 19th centuries, and every room has pleasant views of the well-preserved town or the inn's period gardens, framed by a large magnolia tree. A generous breakfast with homemade muffins, biscuits, eggs, and more is served each morning.

Pros

  • Only lodging in Old Salem
  • Guests get a strong sense of history here
  • Modern conveniences like televisions and free Wi-Fi

Cons

  • Restaurants and nightlife are a drive away
