Hyatt Regency San Francisco

$$ | 5 Embarcadero Center, San Francisco, CA, 94111, USA

This perfectly located property near the Ferry Building has a dramatic 17-story atrium lobby that starred in several 1970s flicks, most notably the disaster epic The Towering Inferno, and is worth seeing even for nonguests. All the guest rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows revealing city or bay views, and many have balconies. While the public spaces are gorgeous, the actual room design is a bit of the typical generic urban business traveler-centric hotel style, with charcoal-colored carpets, plain white walls in suites (newly renovated standard rooms have splashes of blue and wood elements), and some gentle contemporary art on the wall (some of which features San Francisco landmarks). It's definitely a larger, busy hotel geared towards conventions and big events, but also manages to feel a bit charming.

Pros

  • Excellent work desk setup
  • Near lots of restaurants and attractions
  • Very comfortable beds

Cons

  • Unremarkable in-house dining choices
  • Shower pressure is weak
  • Easy to hear noise from street and other rooms while in bed

Indian Springs Calistoga

$$$ | 1712 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA

Palm-studded Indian Springs—operating as a spa since 1862—ably splits the difference between laid-back and chic in accommodations that include lodge rooms, suites, cottages, stand-alone bungalows, and two houses. All are thoughtfully decorated in a simple style, with rich pastels and high-thread-count bedding. Some of the sweetest accommodations are in the View Room category; the largest sleep four easily. The cottages, most of them slightly larger, are extremely popular with regulars (book well in advance); rooms in the lodge, though small, are equally peaceful and represent good value. Playing bocce ball and hanging out on the broad lawn provide diversion when you're not indulging in volcanic-ash mud baths, soaking in the toasty Olympic-size mineral-water pool, or dining at Sam's Social Club.

Pros

  • Sprawling grounds with outdoor seating areas
  • On-site Sam's Social Club restaurant
  • Enormous mineral pool

Cons

  • Lodge rooms are small

Inn at 161

$ | 161 Hanford St., Sutter Creek, CA, 95685, USA

For many years known as the Grey Gables Inn, this property at the northern end of Sutter Creek's historic downtown received a boutique-style makeover following a 2021 change of ownership. All rooms have gas-log fireplaces, Keurig coffeemakers, upscale bath products, and TVs; some accommodations have a soaking or Jacuzzi tub, and the suites have a private patio. Afternoon tea and evening refreshments are served in the parlor (or you can enjoy them in your room); birds flit about the wisteria in the terraced garden.

Pros

  • Gas-log fireplaces in all rooms
  • Some rooms have a soaking or Jacuzzi tub
  • Landscaped grounds

Cons

  • Along town's busy main drag
  • Minimum weekend-stay requirement
  • Some bathrooms could use updating
