Hotel Paseo

$$ | 45--400 Larkspur La., Palm Desert, CA, 92260, USA

A half-block from El Paseo shopping strip, this hip, pet-friendly hotel (under Marriott's Autograph Collection umbrella) reflects the mid-century modern history and upscale, yet casual lifestyle of the desert. Contemporary art is on display in public areas, as well as in rooms and suites, most of which have a balcony or small terrace. Regular pop-ups take place in the lobby, which contains a 1955 cherry-red Cadillac, or in the courtyard, which has an airstream trailer, a pool, a hot tub, firepits, lawn games, and a putting green. Amenities also include a café, restaurant, spa, and morning yoga classes.

Pros

  • Billiards guest suite has an in-room pool table
  • Golf discount through partnership with Desert Willow
  • Courtesy shuttle within a 3-mile radius

Cons

Hotel Pemaquid

$ | 3098 Bristol Rd., New Harbor, ME, 04554, USA

Step back in time at this restored 1888 summer hotel, where the decor in the main building remains Victorian and that in the cottages and bungalows is more contemporary. For a truly romantic retreat, though, book the carriage-house suite. Relax on the big wraparound porch or in the parlor beside the stone fireplace. To keep room rates down, the owners have employed a few cost-saving measures: soap is the only in-room toiletry, and although there's coffee in the morning, there is no breakfast (you can always head to the Sea Gull Shop and Restaurant, next door to the lighthouse, which is known for its memorable meals). Like the hotel itself, the booking process will transport you to earlier times: you must call to request a reservation and then send a deposit in the form of a check; you'll receive a postcard confirmation.

Pros

  • Old-fashioned atmosphere
  • Reasonable rates
  • Great location close to Pemaquid Point Light

Cons

  • Not on the water
  • Spotty Wi-Fi
  • Archaic reservation process

Hotel Petaluma, Tapestry by Hilton

$ | 205 Kentucky St., Petaluma, CA, 94952, USA

Reasonable rates and vintage allure make this 1923 art deco property worth considering for budget travelers, especially those without a car (parking’s a pain) seeking a downtown location and a touch of style. The high-ceilinged, tile-floor lobby, decked out with contemporary sofas and chairs, has boutique-hotel appeal, but the rooms, furnished with less flair, are on the small side. The ground-floor Costeaux Bakery and The Shuckery seafood restaurant are excellent.

Pros

  • Downtown location
  • Some rooms have city and river views
  • Excellent Costeaux Bakery and The Shuckery seafood restaurant

Cons

  • Public spaces grander than the mostly small rooms
  • Hallway sound carries into rooms
  • Lacks parking lot (and on-street parking is difficult), fitness center, and other amenities

Hôtel Plaza Athénée

$$$$ | 37 E. 64th St., New York, NY, 10065, USA

Positioned unobtrusively by Central Park on the Upper East Side, the Plaza Athénée (now related in name only to its Parisian cousin) makes stellar service a priority, with a personal sit-down check-in off to the side of the lobby and extravagant in-room dining service with white tablecloths, candles, and flowers. Rooms have big bathrooms and refined, if nondescript, furnishings and linens. The hotel might seem stuffy to some younger visitors, but to others, it's a welcome dose of old-school luxury. Bar Seine is a fabulously dark and secretive hideaway, and surely the only bar in New York with a floor made of leather. Arabelle serves American fare with a French accent.

Pros

  • Discerning service
  • Fabulous hotel bar
  • Old-world vibe

Cons

  • Lobby can feel dark
  • Might feel stuffy to some

The Hotel Redland

$ | 5 S. Flagler Ave., Homestead, FL, 33030, USA

Of downtown Homestead's smattering of mom-and-pop lodges, this historic inn is by far the most desirable. With its Victorian-style rooms done up in pastels and reproduction antique furniture, there's a fantastic restaurant and bar inside as well. Opened in 1904, this was the town's first hotel, which later became its first mercantile store, first post office, first library, and first boardinghouse. It's now recognized as the oldest building in the city. Each of the 13 charming rooms feature unique layouts and furnishings, and some provide access to a shared balcony. Owners have transformed the hotel's restaurant on the first floor into City Hall Bistro-Martini Bar, a foodie haven for Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine with guitar music on weekends. There's free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

Pros

  • Historic charm
  • Conveniently located

Hotel Royal

$ | 431 E. Broadway, Long Beach, CA, 90802, USA

A great value for Long Beach, the family-owned, European-style Hotel Royal makes up for in kindness what it lacks in fancy extras. Think free breakfast, a lively wine happy hour, and free bike rentals. The hotel was built in 1923 in the art deco style and is in the center of Long Beach's au courant East Village arts district. In keeping with the building's age, the small lobby and some of the rooms have exposed brick walls. If you really want to live your 1920s dream, you can even reserve a room with a built-in Murphy bed, which folds out of sight when you're not using it. The decor is somewhat uninspired, but for the price, the Royal has all you need. The studios, lofts, and suites are individually decorated. Some rooms have en suite private baths, while less-expensive options share a bathroom with other rooms on the floor. Some rooms are equipped with kitchenettes, but there's a fully stocked community kitchen, making this a perfect stop for families, larger groups who want to spend time together, or those who prefer to cook. While not oceanfront, the hotel is a 15-minute walk from the beach.

Pros

  • Lively happy hour
  • Free breakfast and bike rentals
  • Stocked community kitchen good for families

Cons

  • No elevator
  • $25 parking (but inexpensive for Long Beach)
  • Some rooms share bathrooms

Hotel Santa Fe

$$$$ | 1501 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe, NM, 87501, USA

Picurís Pueblo has controlling interest in this handsome Pueblo-style three-story hotel on the Railyard District's edge and a 15-minute walk from the Plaza. The light, airy rooms and suites are traditional Southwestern, with locally handmade furniture, wooden blinds, and Pueblo paintings; many have balconies. The hotel gift shop, Santa Fe's only tribally owned store, has lower prices than many nearby retail stores, and the hotel's rooms and common areas are decorated with a museum-quality collection of Native American artworks. The 35 rooms and suites in the posh Hacienda wing have corner fireplaces and the use of a well-trained butler. Amaya is one of the better hotel restaurants in town, and there's a full-service spa offering a nice range of treatments as well as a refreshing garden pool. Informal talks about Native American history and culture are held in the lobby and Native American ceremonial dances take place on the property.

Pros

Hotel Valencia Santana Row

$$$ | 355 Santana Row, San Jose, CA, 95128, USA

This outpost of a Texas-based boutique hotel group is located in the glossy, Disneyland-ish Santana Row shopping area on the outskirts of San Jose. The Valencia has beautiful Spanish Colonial architecture and large, well-appointed rooms featuring marble bathrooms and large flat-panel HDTVs. Suites and some deluxe rooms have lovely balconies. The main attractions are a rooftop pool and patio along with another courtyard situated by the third-floor lobby, bar, and restaurant.

Pros

  • Pedestrian-friendly
  • Comfortable beds with soft Egyptian linens
  • Unique architecture in public spaces

Cons

  • Bar becomes a loud, crowded nightclub on weekends
  • Lobby elevator is painfully slow
  • Basic room decor
