Inn at Whitewing Farm

$$$ | 370 Valley Rd., West Chester, PA, 19382, USA

Just 2 miles from Longwood Gardens, this family-run, countryside bed-and-breakfast on 13 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens offers more amenities than most and has plush, traditionally furnished rooms and suites in four buildings separate from the main house. Whitewing Farm was originally the home of Russell and Bertha Pippen (he was a vice president of the DuPont Company), and today this romantic mini-resort is run by several generations of a family who enjoy helping guests explore the area. Rooms generally reflect comfortable country style with pretty prints and dark wood furnishings, but some have upgraded to more modern, neutral decor. It's good to check the website's property map for each room's location. An outdoor pool, a tennis court, and a pond for fishing provide reasons to linger on-site, and breakfasts in the 1796 Hay Barn are a major event with three courses such as a French toast soufflé and lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes. The B&B ofers a number of special packages, some special dinners or picnics.

Pros

  • Landscaped patio with outdoor pool and whirlpool bath
  • Tennis court and pond stocked for fishing
  • Delectable three-course breakfasts

Cons

  • Popular spot can get booked up
  • Some walking, as buildings are spread out

Inn of the Turquoise Bear

$$$$ | 342 E. Buena Vista, Santa Fe, NM, 87501, USA

In the 1920s, poet Witter Bynner played host to an eccentric circle of artists and intellectuals, as well as some wild parties in his mid-19th-century Spanish–Pueblo Revival home, which is now a superb bed-and-breakfast with a great location a few blocks from the capitol; in sum, it's the quintessential Santa Fe inn. Rooms are simple, traditional Southwestern style with carved wood furniture and plush linens. The inn's style preserves the building's historic integrity, starting with the lodge-like lobby and extending throughout the lush, terraced grounds with gardens and comfy seating areas. You might sleep in the room where D. H. Lawrence or Willa Cather slept, or perhaps in Robert Oppenheimer's room.

  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Tasty gourmet breakfasts

Cons

  • No pool or hot tub on-site
