Kandahar Lodge

$$$ | 3824 Big Mountain Rd., Whitefish, MT, 59937, USA

Located in the ski village, this hotel has the feel of a true mountain lodge: quiet and cozy, the massive lobby fireplace and the Snug Bar are attractive public spaces, while the wood-accented guest rooms feature tile-and-granite finishes, leather furniture, and down comforters on the beds. The Kandahar Wellness Center provides on-site massage services daily. Also on-site is Cafe Kandahar (no lunch, reservations recommended); owned by well-regarded chef Andy, it boasts a wine list that has been recognized by major wine magazines. Kate's Lazy Meadow Motel

$$$ | 5191 Rte. 28, Mount Tremper, NY, 12457, USA

The exterior of this single-story 1950s motel reveals little of what's inside the meticulously appointed suites, owned by Kate Pierson of the B-52s. The funky decor includes vintage pieces—Eames furniture, Russel Wright kitchenware—as well as custom wallpaper and handcrafted bathroom tiles and shower curtains. Most of the suites have a mint '50s kitchen and a sitting area with a gas fireplace; some suites have sleeping lofts and private decks. Key West Bed and Breakfast/The Popular House

$ | 415 William St., FL, 33040, USA

There are accommodations for every budget here, but the owners reason that budget travelers deserve as pleasant an experience (and as lavish a tropical continental breakfast) as their well-heeled counterparts. Local art—large, splashy canvases and a Gauguinesque mural—decorates the walls, while handmade textiles (owner Jody Carlson is a talented weaver) drape chairs, couches, and beds at this historic home. Less expensive rooms burst with bright colors (hand-painted dressers add a whimsical flourish) and balconies on the second-floor rooms overlook the gardens. Spacious, and more expensive, third-floor rooms are decorated with a paler palette and original furniture.

Pros

  • Lots of art
  • Tiled outdoor shower
  • Hot tub and sauna area is a welcome hangout

Keystone Lodge and Spa

$$ | 22101 U.S. 6, Keystone, CO, 80435, USA

The cinder-block structure gives no hint of the gracious, pampered living inside the door at this lodge next to the tiny lake in Keystone Village, close to several restaurants and shops. Rooms with king-size beds are on the small side, whereas rooms with two queen-size beds tend to be more generously proportioned. Many rooms have terraces overlooking the trees and Snake River. Perhaps best of all, a short shuttle ride delivers you directly to the slopes. After skiing, the resort spa provides a welcome respite.

Pros

  • One of the larger properties in the resort
  • Lovely on-site spa
  • Dog-friendly

Cons

  • Rooms are small
  • Hot tubs get crowded
  • Limited housekeeping
