Moon River District, Thunderbolt, and the Islands

Neighborhood
ABOUT

Drive out of Savannah’s downtown and you’ll find one-of-a-kind marsh views and stunning sunset vistas. Thunderbolt, bordering Savannah’s east side and the Wilmington River, is a lush bedroom community and historic fishing village that’s home to Bonaventure Cemetery and delicious seafood spots like Tubby’s Tank House. Head farther east on U.S. 80 and discover Wilmington Island, a cozy neighborhood on the Wilmington River. Historic Fort Pulaski and Oatland Island Wildlife Center are nearby.

Experience marshside tranquility in the Moon River District, named after the tune that made Savannah native Johnny Mercer famous. The area includes the Sandfly, Isle of Hope, and Skidaway Island neighborhoods, and is an off-the-beaten-path stop for outdoor adventurers and history buffs.

Learn about Gullah Geechee culture at the former oyster cannery that is now the Pin Point Heritage Museum, explore the area by water with various kayak outfitters, and sip a handcrafted cocktail on the dock at The Wyld Dock Bar. See beautiful coastal homes on Isle of Hope, a historic community flanked by the Herb and Skidaway rivers. Wormsloe Historic Site on Skidaway Road is known for its picturesque "oak allee" drive. Carry on to Skidaway Island and enjoy a nature walk at Skidaway Island State Park.
