Casa Tuna

$$ | Francisco Ortega 8, Mexico City, 04000, Mexico

Some rooms have kitchenettes and terraces.

Pros

  • In the heart of Coyoacán

Catalina Beach Resort

$$ | Zihuatanejo, 40880, Mexico

There's a B-movie quality to this old hotel, constructed in an angular 1960s style and now surrounded by tall trees and thick vegetation; it was last renovated and expanded in 2011 and 2012. Guest quarters are plain but well maintained and priced according to the quality of the ocean view. The cheapest, boxlike rooms on the first floor have no view; the spacious ones on the top floor scan the entire bay from hammock-equipped terraces. Furnishings are nothing special; bathrooms are tiled in blue and green; and the quality of mattresses varies from room to room—give 'em a bounce before you decide. The crashing waves below may lure you down more than 200 stairs to beach level, where there are lounge chairs, a pool, and a bar.

Pros

  • Good location on Zihua's best beach
  • Relatively affordable

Cons

  • Rooms are quite basic
  • Not all have a/c
  • Breakfast not offered from mid-August to October

Chan-Kah Resort Village

$$ | Carretera Ruinas, Palenque, 29960, Mexico

If you want to stay near the ruins, this is the place. Amid colorful wild ginger and aromatic jasmine, this cluster of spacious bungalows feels miles from anywhere. Your bungalow has a dressing room, sitting area, and a bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking gardens. If you aren't already close enough to nature, there is a pair of mahogany rocking chairs on your back porch. From many rooms you can see the nearby stream that fills the immense lagoon-style pool. Don't confuse this Chan-Kah with the hotel of the same name in town (that one is called Chan-Kah Centro.) This hotel has more character, and it's closer to the ruins.

Pros

  • Closest lodging option to ruins
  • Wonderfully secluded

Cons

  • Farther from activities in town

In addition to a swimming pool and a rooftop bar, the hotel has a restaurant that's become a favorite of locals and visitors alike.

Coco Hacienda

$$ | Av. Tulum, Mz 39, Lote 1, Tulum, Mexico

Slip through the nondescript entrance, and you'll find a charming property with a lush, sprawling garden with partly tiled pathways, lights strung up from palm trees, two inviting pools, and a spacious central palapa with whirring ceiling fans. Rooms encircle the garden, and all are large, clean, colorful, and decorated with furniture purchased secondhand from Mexican haciendas in neighboring states. Being in town instead of at the beachfront has its perks, more local color and much better prices chief among them. Plus, guests here can take advantage of a day at the beach at one of this property's sister hotels. If you're traveling with kids, ask about adjacent rooms. If you're feeling like a splurge, ask about rooms with whirlpool tubs. And if you're sensitive to noise, ask for something at the back of the property (away from the busy road out front).

Pros

  • Excellent value
  • Great restaurant
  • Beautiful grounds

Cons

  • Location on the main road may mean traffic noise on parts of the property
  • 15-minute drive or cab ride from the beach
  • Plenty of mosquitoes

Coral Princess Golf & Dive Resort

$$ | Carretera Costera Norte, Km 2.5, Cozumel, 77600, Mexico

Good snorkeling off the rocky shoreline and a relaxed family feel make this resort, which offers both hotel rooms and apartmentlike units, a north-coast favorite. The latter have one or two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a balcony or terrace. Most of the studio-size hotel rooms overlook the jungle; try to get an ocean-facing one on an upper floor for the best views and sea breezes. The hotel has an infinity pool, a small, man-made, sandy beach and its own PADI dive center.

Pros

  • Decent, well-priced meals
  • Family-friendly
  • Snorkeling right off beach

Cons

  • Can be noisy at pool
  • Some rooms lack bathtubs
  • Time-share pitches

Courtyard by Marriott

$$ | Av. Colón 504, Mérida, 97000, Mexico

With its contemporary design in concrete, the Courtyard by Marriott is a commanding presence amid the other major-brand hotels along Avenida Colón near Paseo de Montejo. Rooms are efficient and comfortable, if not especially interesting, though some on higher floors offer sweeping city views, which both guests and nonguests can enjoy while indulging in drinks and snacks at the rooftop Kioyú Sky Lounge. The rooftop pool is also a favorite feature of many guests.

Pros

  • Rooftop pool
  • Rooms with all the latest amenities
  • City views from the rooftop bar

Cons

  • Historic center is a short taxi ride or long walk away
  • Generic big-brand experience

Courtyard by Marriott Cancún Airport

$$ | Blvd. Luis Donaldo Colosio, Km 12.5, Cancún, 77560, Mexico

The draw of this deluxe property is that it's five minutes from the airport and offers free round-trip airport shuttle service, making it ideal for those who are vacationing in Playa del Carmen or Tulum and who have an early flight. Rooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi, large desks with ergonomic chairs, laptop safes, and 32-inch plasma TVs; suites have a lounge area, dining room, kitchenette, and private steam room. Given its location, the hotel is surprisingly quiet—even in the garden courtyard, outdoor pool, and palapa lounge. As it's on a relatively undeveloped stretch of highway, however, the 20-minute commute to central Cancún creates a sense of isolation. If you're longing for the beach, use your Courtyard towel as an "entrance pass" at the Omni Hotel, where you can enjoy pools, bars, and a beach area.

Pros

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Free shuttle to airport and beach club
  • 24-hour gym

Cons

  • High phone charges
  • Far from Cancún center
  • Some rooms face the parking lot

Cozumel Hotel & Resort

$$ | Carretera Costera Sur, Km 1.7, Cozumel, 77600, Mexico

In high season, guests surround the enormous pool at this bright-orange Wyndham property, while activity directors enliven the crowd with games and loud music. The scene is quieter at the beach club, which is accessed via an under-street tunnel; however, the beach here is a rocky shoreline, not a sandy strand. The large rooms are reminiscent of a moderate chain hotel, with tile floors, comfy beds, and bathtub-shower combos. All-inclusive packages cover not only meals, drinks, taxes, and tips but also a scuba lesson at the hotel's PADI dive center.

Pros

  • Near grocery stores and restaurants
  • 10 fully accessible rooms
  • Breakfast-only option available

Cons

  • Rocky beach area
  • Poolside entertainment loud

Durango 219

$$ | Calle de Durango 219, Mexico City, 06700, Mexico

This six-story boutique hotel on the side of Roma Norte closer to Bosque de Chapultepec and Avenida Reforma offers uncluttered contemporary rooms with smart TVs, fast Wi-Fi, and stand-alone rain head showers, but instead of a conventional front desk, guests communicate with the highly efficient staff through text messages or phone calls. It's a set-up that's more akin to an Airbnb and may not be for everyone, but the reasonable rates, great location, and well-designed rooms have earned the hotel a very positive following. Barbero restaurant, on the ground floor, is a nice option for a glass of wine or a full dinner while the rooftop eatery Cafe de Mayo serves tasty breakfast and brunch fare (it's not open at night).

Pros

  • Nice restaurants on roof and ground floor
  • Excellent location near Condesa and many restaurants
  • Rooms have balconies with great neighborhood views

Cons

  • Lacks front desk, gym, and common spaces
  • Rooms on lower floors receive some noise from street and ground-level restaurant

El Cid la Ceiba

$$ | Carretera Chankanaab, Km 4.5, Cozumel, 77600, Mexico

Next door to the Puerta Maya cruise pier and shopping center, this smallish resort, part of a small Mexican hotel chain, is a comfortable choice, with some condo-style rooms that have kitchenettes. Most overlook the ocean, though you may have to crane your neck around the massive cruise ships parked in front to see it. The lobby and pool area separate two buildings, one facing a generous beach and the other above a smaller patch of sand bordering a shallow saltwater lagoon with a waterfall and a temazcal (outdoor sauna).

Pros

  • Comfy accommodations
  • Reasonably priced all-inclusive option available
  • Close to town and other restaurants

Cons

  • Pool area is small and the scene can be boisterous

Emporio Acapulco

$$ | Av. Costera Miguel Alemán 121, Acapulco, 39670, Mexico

All of the rooms at this hotel are comfortably spacious, with marble floors and bathrooms, modern contemporary furniture, and balconies with ocean views. The lobby, restaurant, and bar are comfortable for both guests dressed up for a night on the town and families in shorts and T-shirts. There are two pools with swim-up bars—one is geared to families, with a waterslide, while the other is strictly for adults. The all-inclusive plan is a good deal, especially if you're planning to spend most of your time at the resort pools and beach, but there are some restrictions about what and when you can eat (each restaurant has a different schedule, not all are part of the AI plan, and not all dishes and drinks are covered, though many are).

Pros

  • All-inclusive plan can be a good deal
  • Nice pools geared toward families and adults

Cons

  • All-inclusive plans don't cover all food at all times
  • Lots of traffic in front of the hotel

Estero Beach Resort

$$ | Carretera Tijuana–Ensenada, Ensenada, 22860, Mexico

Families love this long-standing resort on Ensenada's top beach, especially because of its private location and endless activities like horseback riding, tennis, volleyball, kayaking, and Jet Skiing. Behind the secure grounds are the resort, an RV park, and a retirement community, all with access to a swimming pool, two restaurants, and a children's playground. The best rooms (some with kitchenettes) are by the sand and have sliding glass doors that lead to private patios where you can watch dolphins and seals swimming in the bay. Be sure to check out the outstanding collection of pre-Columbian artifacts in the resort's small museum. Midweek winter rates are a real bargain, and there are other frequent specials on the website.

Fiesta Americana Mérida

$$ | Paseo de Montejo 451, Mérida, 97000, Mexico

This popular choice, a branch of a dependable Mexican chain, attempts to evoke the grandeur of the mansions on Paseo de Montejo with colonial accents, plush armchairs, gleaming marble, and a stained-glass ceiling in the lobby. The subdued rooms have extras like balconies, bathtubs, hair dryers, and coffeemakers, but be prepared to pay surcharges on Wi-Fi and bottled water. Some rooms face the street and are a little noisier; others, though quieter, face a dull inner courtyard with the hotel pool. Downstairs you'll find a mall with stores selling souvenirs, crafts, and clothes; a couple of restaurants (including a Chili's), rental-car agency offices; and other services. Occasionally there are events, including dinner shows and dances for children (inquire at the front desk).

Golden Parnassus All Inclusive Resort & Spa

$$ | Blvd. Kukulcán, Km 14.5, Cancún, 77500, Mexico

Accommodations at this adults-only resort have rich wood furnishings and a cream-and-plum palette and feature small sitting areas that open onto balconies overlooking the lagoon or ocean. Views from the latter are better, but there’s an extra charge for an oceanfront room with a whirlpool tub and minibar. A spa offers massages and facials, plus there's an outdoor temazcal (dome-shape sweat lodge), which the Maya believe purifies the body.
