Hotel Morales

$$ | Av. Ramón Corona 243, 44100, Mexico Fodor's Choice

After being abandoned for 30 years, this downtown hotel—originally a 19th-century rooming house—has been transformed into one of the city's most luxurious lodgings. No wonder it's the choice of celebrities from movie stars to soccer stars. Demure guest rooms have crown moldings, blond-wood floors, and gold-and-beige furnishings with an old-world style. Café tables on the rooftop terrace make for a casual retreat. The lobby and restaurant are much more formal.

Recommended Fodor's Video

Hotel Quinta Luna

$$ | Calle 3 Sur 702, Cholula, 72760, Mexico Fodor's Choice

A five-minute walk from the Zócalo, this elegant boutique hotel set inside a grand 17th-century mansion with a central patio and fountain was restored (and is now operated) using environmentally conscious practices and with as many of the original materials as possible; the well-stocked library was built entirely from repurposed vigas, or beams. The property is solar powered, and even the paints are naturally derived to match the original colors. Immaculate, spacious rooms have polished wood furniture and floors and high, exposed-beam ceilings. King-size beds are wrapped in luscious, down-filled bedding and supplied with a pillow menu. The outstanding restaurant serves contemporary Mexican fare and is worth a visit in its own right.

Pros

  • Alluring gardens
  • Spacious rooms
  • Acclaimed restaurant

Cons

  • A bit of a walk from San Andrés Cholula dining and nightlife
  • Some rooms pick up noise from the street
  • Romantic adult vibe may not be ideal for families

JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City Santa Fe

$$ | Av. Santa Fe 160, Mexico City, 01376, Mexico Fodor's Choice

Among the most luxurious and centrally located of the cluster of hotels in business-oriented Santa Fe, this stylish contemporary urban retreat caters primarily to corporate travelers, but leisure visitors willing to contend with the out-of-the-way location will appreciate the extremely reasonable rates and proximity to several excellent restaurants and the enormous Centro Santa Fe shopping mall. Las Luciernagas

$$ | Calle Las Joyas s/n, Valle de Bravo, 51200, Mexico Fodor's Choice

Las Luciernagas, with its bucolic location off a remote gravel road a few miles from town, is a rare cross between a B&B and a five-star hotel—what other B&B has a wine list? Four of the five rooms have fireplaces, and all have luxury bedding, artisanal toiletries, minibars, and a unique sense of privacy thanks to the rooms being spaced quite far apart, and the helpful but unobtrusive hosts. "La Cima" is an expansive suite with a terrace that overlooks the stunning manicured landscape of giant agaves, calla lilies, and birds of paradise; "Los Encuentros" opens to what is essentially its own private garden, with a stone path that leads to the Jacuzzi. The public spaces include a range of quiet terraces and seating areas, and top-notch dinners (with both Mexican and international dishes) are available by request. There's no better choice in Valle for a romantic getaway, or just a quiet home base.

Quinta Real Oaxaca

$$ | Calle 5 de Mayo 300, Oaxaca, 68000, Mexico Fodor's Choice

This breathtaking 16th-century building—the former Convento de Santa Catalina de Siena—is one of the city's landmarks and is now a luxury full-service hotel. Around every corner is a discovery: a rear patio holds the covered pileta, a circle of stone basins where the nuns did laundry. The lavish breakfast buffet, which you can enjoy even if you're not a hotel guest, is served under the arches in what was the convent's kitchen. The grassy courtyard where mariachis play is a great spot for a margarita. Staffers are crisp and professional, and always ready with directions or advice—as you'd hope they would be, given the audacious prices.
